Name That Song!

*x7 for reggiebar. Great job! Granted, 4 is a touch more obscure. I really just threw it in to reinforce the theme.

I still have Exit Stage Left & Tom Tom Club on vinyl from record shopping as a kid, so this one was pretty easy for me....

I should have known the Rush tune... I'm gonna have to drag it off the CD shelf and play it the next time my pop radio station decides to play a country tune...

It's on Moving Pictures, Exit...Stage Left, Chronicles, Different Stages, and one of the Retrospectives. You have your choice of version. If you want a little variation, here's a pre-release version. It's not quite done quite the way you're used to (although it's pretty close):

Here's a page with a bunch of funky (and not necessarily good) covers; lots of people choose Tom Sawyer as the song to cover:

I just figured you might want something to listen to as you try to figure out the last song. :)

I'm pretty sure I have ESL on vinyl. I know I have it on CD and I also have it on Laserdisc. My Rush collection is a story for a different thread, though. I never collected Tom Tom Club, but I saw them live; they played at my college in 1992 or so. I also have the original (and trippy) video for Genius of Love on tape, and they do a good live version of it on Stop Making Sense while David Byrne is changing outfits.

Clue: very popular band; as far as I know, not-so-popular song.
Verses 2 and 3:

4.
Worked for thirty years
Sharing hopes and fears
Dreamin' of the day
He could turn and say

His wife was Annie Mae
With any man a game she'd play
When [...] was out of town
She couldn't keep her dress down

1) Here, you can be anything...
Anything that scares you
I think that scares you

NAME THAT SONG!

You have to do at least 3 songs sharing a common theme (usually a word in the song title or artist's name). And you should be nice and wait for the current round to finish.

Ok, since we know the theme is "Tom," I'll post the song in its entirety, only cutting out the other word from the title. Fill in that word and the artist, and this round will be done.

Here's a tale of Tom
Who worked the railroads long
His wife would cook his meal
As he would change the wheel

[...] Tom, Seventh Son, Always knew what's goin on
Ain't a thing that you can hide from Tom
There ain't nothing that you can hide from Tom

Worked for thirty years
Sharing hopes and fears
Dreamin' of the day
He could turn and say

Poor Tom, work's done, been lazin' out in the noonday sun

Ain't a thing that you can hide from Tom

His wife was Annie Mae
With any man a game she'd play
When Tom was out of town
She couldn't keep her dress down

[...] Tom, Seventh Son, always knew what's goin on

Ain't a thing that you can hide from Tom

And so it was one day
People got to Annie Mae (?)
Tom stood, a gun in his hand
And stopped her runnin' around

[...] Tom, Seventh Son, gotta die for what you've done

All those years of work are thrown away
To ease your mind is that all you can say?

But what about that grandson on your knee?
Them railroad songs, Tom would sing to me

Ain't nothing that you can hide from Tom

Keep-a Truckin'

From the oft-forgotten (at least by me) Zeppelin album Coda comes "Poor Tom"....17 years ago I never would have forgotten about this song, but I stopped listening to the classics in High School.

Do I get to give this a try and do three songs now? Also, is there a certain genre that these songs must be part of?

Go ahead, give it a shot. I recommend rock / pop and it'ld be nice if at least 1 of them were a top 10 hit at some point or another.

1) and the radio is on
and the radio man is speaking
and the radio man says women were a curse
so men built Paramount studios
and men built Columbia studios
and men built Los Angeles

2) Glory Glory Hallelu
Glory for Plug One and Two
But that glory's been denied
By concensing dookie eyes
People think they diss my person
by stating I'm darkly packed

3) Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows

And that's 2 more *s making it a clean sweep for reggiebar. Good going, man!

Why this is the best animated GIF that comes up for "good job," I'll never know.

Next Clue Please.. :(

1) and the radio is on

and the radio man says women were a curse
so men built Paramount studios
and men built Columbia studios
and men built Los Angeles
it is 5 a.m. and you are listening to Los Angeles
it is 5 a.m. and you are listening to Los Angeles
and the radio man says it is a beautiful night out there
and the radio man says rock and roll lives
and the radio man says it is a beautiful night out there in Los Angeles
you live in Los Angeles and you are going to Recida
we are all in some way or another going to Recida some day, to die
and the radio man laughs because the radio man f@cks a model too
gone savage for teenagers with automatic weapons and boundless love
gone savage for teenagers who are aesthetically pleasing,
in other words, fly

2) Glory Glory Hallelu
Glory for Plug One and Two
But that glory's been denied
By concensing dookie eyes
People think they diss my person
by stating I'm darkly packed
I know this so I point at Q-Tip
and he states, "Black is Black"
Mirror mirror on the wall
Shovel chestnuts in my path
Just keep all nuts twistin up
so I don't get an aftermath
But if I do I'll calmly punch them
in the 4th day of July
Cause they tried to mess with third degree

Okay, the three bands all share a common word in their title which should help greatly. Number two is a Hip-Hop act.

I'm guessing that the common word is "soul." If I interpret your clue correctly, I'll guess De La Soul as the band for #2. I have no song name for either.

You're right.

Hooray! If only I knew another band with "Soul" in the title, or knew the names of any De La Soul songs.....
