hey everyone. I need some opinions and advice. I've collected dvds since 2002. My first dvd being "Spider-Man" I dont have many about 1300. I love my collection, and im very proud of it :yay:.

The problem i have now is the "soon to be norm" Blu ray. I have no problem with BD's i love them! I pretty much made the "jump" towards BD so thats not my issue. Here is my problem as an example:

The Hangover DVD
The Hangover Part II Blu Ray

I own these, part of me wants to keep it that way, the other way is to re buy part 1 on bd. thus selling my dvd copy. Or sell my BD hangover and get it on DVD hmmm?

Journey to the Center of the Earth DVD

Want to buy Journey 2, but in what format? DVD or Blu then rebuy Journey 1 on BD? same goes for Sherlock Holmes.

The answer is simple, i know, do as you wish whatever you want etc. lol but i was wondering what you guys do if you were in my situation?? Should i continue just on BD? or finish the series on the format i have?? or????

With Blu-Ray, it's all about research and personal tastes. For example, if you got the Alien movies on DVD, then get the Blu-Ray versions because they are remastered. Blade Runner too.

My advice: Just get the Journey 2 on blu, and keep Journey 1 on DVD. Unless you're a completeist and want continuity with your library, then buy both on Blu.

Furthermore, I have a weird thing about box art. Sometimes, studios thinks there's a need to change up the artwork on the Blu release with bad photoshop. That's why I haven't bought Groundhog's Day on Blu because of the nasty art.

Hmm. never thought about getting the Alien movies on BD, since i have that massive 9 disc set. lol Ive actually never seen ANY of those films. would you recommend?? im being serious too tho :csad: which is why i havent seen Prometheus...anyways...

Ive been considering just buying it on BD but not 100% sure. Ive gotten so used to BD lol I would prefer to buy movies that are worth the BD treatment. like sci-fi superhero, action, movies with effects, something like The Vow aint worth a BD buy imo lol

I was never really big on the cover art BUT i have a thing for slip covers!!! lol i love them and lately the companies are screwing dvds bad and BDS are getting all the nice slip covers! but oh well companies have been getting really lazy as of late with both formats, plain discs, no scene selections, booklets about the movies, only one that still does it is Disney...so far haha

Why buy it if you're not gonna watch it? :p

Drop Journey 1 and 2, and do yourself a favor and watch Alien and Aliens. :)

But yeah, I'd say keep an eye out for certain blu-rays where they did a good job on the transfers. For example, Raiders of the Lost Ark on Blu will be totally cleaned up for the format.

I used to have close to 500 dvds. I wound up selling them all and purchasing blu rays Unfortunately some films aren't out yet and I have an obsession with watching things in HD . I hardly ever watch a dvd unless I really want to see something or it's wrestling.
My advice would be to keep the dvd if you are happy with it.

Octoberist,

Oh man i do i lot of blind buys, i just like the sets haha i think they look cool!!

LOL will do. ive been wanting to but i cant find the BD collection anywhere :(

good point i like the indy films, im really looking forward to those, i still need Jurassic Park on BD! I am rebuying however the movies i like on bd, so im gonna have quite the dvd collection that i will need to sell. lol

I have really REALLY considered doing that lol but your right about some movies not being out yet, bummer it is!

Im okay with the Dvd i just have a thing with keeping everything "the same" lol it is a bit of a waste of money to re buy since i know i wont get top dollar to a medicore movie lol but thanks for the advice man!

Your first problem is wanting Hangover 2 and Journey to the Center of the Earth on any format.

The only things I buy on dvd nowadays are just old shows that probably won't ever come out on blu ray, otherwise, I just buy blu rays.

I only rebuy blu ray versions of films that I already own on dvd if:

A. Cheap
B. New special features
C. Really like the film

So if any of these apply to any of the films that you already have and want to upgrade to blu-ray just use that thinking.

Personally what I did when I got a Blu-ray player was buy all new movies on Blu-ray. Honestly, why in the hell would you spend money on DVDs now that you have a better product to choose from.

When it comes to my favorite films and other films with nice effects I rebought them on Blu-ray. Stuff like comedies do not need to be in Hi-def for me(I'm not one of those HD snobs that won't ever watch a DVD again)so I won't upgrade my current comedies but will buy future ones on Blu-ray.

I can understand if you have one film on DVD and the sequel on Blu-ray, or you want to buy the sequel. I say just get ALL new movies on Blu-ray and when you get the money take a long look at your collection and make a list of movies you think would be worth upgrading in the future.

For me, I don't bother upgrading the DVDs I already own to Blu-Ray. The difference isn't really worth it to me, unless there is a brand new Director's Cut or something that makes it worth it.

New stuff I buy on Blu-Ray.

I have a few series that I'm in the same situation with, most notably Harry Potter which was eight films over about ten years and started long before Blu-Ray became mainstream. But that's what I do.

I don't have blueray yet....but if I did, I would only purchase Blues that had extra special things on them. It's a question of money. I love movies and watching all types. I have a quick estimate of a couple thousand DVDs (movies and TV series) and there are plenty of both that I have recorded myself off of cable...and will not bother to pay for a new DVD unless it is real cheap and has good extras. If I sat down now and just started watching my DVDs I would be set for years. You may not have to worry about the money or storage space for them like I do....but I see no reason to needlessly pay to upgrade.

I imagine a lot of it has to do with our ages too. As someone who was stuck with VHS most of my life, DVDs still look mighty impressive, so I have less of an incentive to upgrade them to Blu-Ray.

imo, i would buy the newer stuff on blu ray, especially if the prices are about the same.

best buy has an upgrade and save deal every couple of months where you bring in dvds and in return they will give you a $5 off coupon for each to use toward a new blu ray

i have traded in/upgraded almost all my dvds now. i probably have less than 10 dvds and close to 300 blu rays now

There's a lot of things to consider...if money isn't an issue I'd say go for it and replace your collection...blu ray prices are going down a bit too, and usually they already come with an extra dvd copy. that's a plus for you.

i got rid of my dvds but some of 'em i wish i had held onto because they are now no longer available and not even made on blu ray yet...or possibly at all. I would cross reference your entire collection first.

some movies just can't get any better looking beyond a dvd...in terms of the new blu ray format i mean. i've bought some blu rays that are near carbon copies of their dvd counterpart.

newer films like journey 2 and hangover 2 will have obvious clarity differences...but going back to films from the 90's and further...unless they get careful attention and super special edition transfers and remastering and special features...i don't bother with the blu ray anymore.

keep the extra deluxe special editions you have and also as a rule for me...when it comes to comedies...a clearer picture isn't going to make you laugh any harder or any less...so i'm happy getting dvd's of comedies if they're just gonna be cheaper anyway.

LOL im a movie aficionado i love buying movies and watching them :)

yeah i strickly stick to dvd when it comes to tv and WWE dvds

Good point. I personally like special features on big budget movies i like watching them mainly on Superhero moives! and lately the DVD version get screwed! Thus i have all the MCU on both formats :)

Same here man i love the Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney so those are double dipped for sures! lol and lately i have been getting movies on BD that i didnt have on dvd, like Safehouse, Hook, and Labryinth. When i get the chance and money i upgrade :) only on "worthy movies" lol

I see your point man, and i do too buy blu ray mainly since theres a massive Price difference, for example, Wrath of the Titans:

DVD: 17.99
BD 22.99
$5 aint much of a difference lol

Same here man. out of all the ones i have ive only seen like 200 lol

ive really considered that but i end up losing money since best buy is really expensive imo

right on man, yeah some movies are not on BD yet and i like knowing a dvd copy is out of print, not that it increases in vaule but is considered "rare" lol onlder movies, i think, are not worth the upgrade it is "clearer" but not that much of a difference. unless, like a fellow boardie just said about a directors cut then for sures!

I really appreciate the input guys! im leaning towards just moving forward with BD's on some moives and still sticking to dvds on effect-less movies, like warrior or the vow for example and comedies lol
