Neill Blomkamp’s next project... ELYSIUM? - Part 1

If you truly think he's terrible in SOA, then I reiterate, you do not know what good acting is, no need to return the argument against me, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. Some people think they can judge acting, but they cannot. When you learn the craft a bit, you understand a bit more what it is, believe me.

I'm sorry but theres something called an opinion and I believe everyone has one, I'm not saying your wrong for liking the guy, I think you may want to tone yourself down a few notches. I'm sure your aware I'm one of many people who feel the same about the man.

Case closed.

you can have your opinions but he is pretty damn good in SOA imo but why in the blue hell we talking about charlie in such an unrelated movie this happens on the hype all the damn time they have to bash another movie to praise another

I wasn't bashing anyone just making a comparison as many of us do here on the hype.

Was anyone bashing any movie in favor of another? Hunnams name just came up in the topic of bad actors.

Saw this the other day and I was expecting more. The production design was top of the line. The acting was good except for Jodi Foster and her accent.

Somethings really bugged me though...
1) How can shoulder launched rockets launched from Earth chase down spaceships in space? It seemed like that scene's only purpose was to introduce Kruegar. It seemed like it would have been better to have the rocket defenses on Elysium.

2) Why did the robot's need the lethal dose of radiation in their construction? Look I understand it's science fiction and it's an advanced form of construction but it seemed to be there just to give Max his deadly dose.

3) Everyone seemed to be *****ey just to be *****ey. Yes there are a lot of rich people that are greedy as @#$% but where are the rich people that work for the benefit of mankind? Where were the George Clooney's and other rich people that are always telethoning and helping people?

I thought this had to do with Elysium being labelled as a safe haven of sorts. Citizens heads would turn if they constantly saw rockets and other stuff being shot off Elysium so it's all just handled on Earth.

I'd rather have rockets launched from my home than at it

7/10. because its a R rated movie with violence, blood and intense action it gets bumped to 8/10.

this is a simple oldschool scifi movie from the 80's. simple and good executed story.

not to good and not to bad.

Was Matt Damon that wooden in this to compare it to PR?
I feel like this was directed at me since I brought up Pacific Rim, and to answer your question, no. There was no wooden acting in this film. Damon was good as usual. Especially compared to Hunnam's awfulness in PR (and I agree with you, he's terrible in most things. I think he's decent on SoA, but still the weakest link on that show). The reason I said I thought I might prefer Pacific Rim, is because they are each trying to be two very different kinds of films, and I think PR succeeds more at being the type of film it wants to be than Elysium does. But just barely. They're fairly even, imo.

what is wrong with hollywood. what is up with this obssesion with ''destiny'' and ''chosen one''. there is no way that Blomkamp came into the office and pitched a movie where a nun says to a kid that he is destined for something important or big.

it just sounds wrong.

Overall I liked it. Damon was great; you really felt for him. Copley was especially awesome; easily my favorite movie villain of the year so far. The concept was great, but the execution was a bit of a mixed bag. Even if Earth had devolved into a sh**hole like the movie suggests, I still would think the technology more than 150 years in the future would be more advanced than that. Elysium obviously had super-futuristic tech, but I would still think Earth would look a little more updated than it appeared. It almost looked like the present day, and you would think that things would have evolved a little bit more before the rich would have just turned their back on everyone and moved to the stars.
I also think things worked out a little TOO perfectly in the end. Max and Spider's plan seemed so quickly-conceived, it was a little unrealistic to think it would have worked out THAT well for everyone in the end.
. Still, a very enjoyable movie with some amazing action sequences and special effects. I definitely would recommend it, though it's far from an "instant classic" like District 9 was.

This was almost exactly what I thought. It's a throwback. A slightly weak 7/10 for me. I think with some better camerawork it could've been around an 8.
That shakey cam... There was a point when I thought it was just enough. Then they kept using it.

the shaky cam in the action scenes was an insult . why? because 8 out of 10 times the action has a shaky cam because its a PG13 rating. with the shaky technique they dont show violence and full contact fighting. this was a R rated movie that showed everything. some shots were on Verhoven Robocop level . so why the shaky cam? :oldrazz::woot:

Right! Like when
Kruger got his face blown off.
:wow:

i liked the violence in the movie. it reminded me so much on the 80's and 90's.

when he got the exo skeleton suit?they showed everything when they show in close up how they cut his head to insert the chip? thats what i like in my scifi movies.

i also like that every action scene showed someone getting wounded or dying. the first action scene and the first fight with Kruger........and he gets stabbed. end of second act and he almost died on top of his radiation. thats what i like. when the hero is in danger the whole movie.

7.3/10

Blomkamp is FIENDING a Halo movie. I feel like that would be such a beautiful match. Get Spielberg to produce and Blomkamp to direct.

If I remember correctly, there was an interview where Blomkamp said that he wanted all the Earth stuff to be hand held and shaky cam and all of Elysium to be very smooth to emphasize the differences between the two.

Well, this was yet another summer disappointment for me. Don't get me wrong, I liked it quite a bit, but I guess my expectations got too high, even after the mixed reviews. The visuals and acting were great, but I agree with most of the criticisms about the story. And I can't believe I'm about to say this, but...I think I actually liked Pacific Rim more. If you would have told me last month after I first saw PR that I'd be saying this now, I would have laughed in your face. Who knows though, maybe this one will grow on me with subsequent viewings like that one did. Right now I'd give it a 7-7.5/10.

Shame, it seems none of the big summer movies this year have delivered on their promise for me, even if I did really like most of them.

I'd give it a 5/10.

And personally, I still don't quite understand the Hunnam hate at all. I liked his character a lot and he was much more interesting than Damon in this film. Damon did absolutely nothing for me. And I have always liked everything I've seen him in. I think it was more to do with script. It all just felt so mechanical.

And I still can't get over that forced way to get him in the radiation room. "Either you go in, or I get somebody else who does."

Come on. You live in a future with robots. Use them! I get the theme of the powerful looking down at the lesser man, but that was one of the things that bugged me. It was so blatantly one dimensional to the point it was on the nose. Namely Foster's character and the Elysium populace.

"Oh! Strange space ship lands! Here, as all rich people seem to not know what the **** to do, just run and scream and be worried that the barbarians are coming to kill us!"

I'm just really tired of the whole rich people are evil theme in movies.

I was thinking that when I was watching the film, and then I was smacked in the face by some really frustrating shaky cam at times where I thought I was going to get a headache.

By the way, I sure hope I'm not the only who really thought Jodie Foster was terrible in this.

not every action scene on Earth had a shaky cam. so no not going to work.

is anyone shocked how noone talks about Elysium? not even complaining. on other forums,in the comment sections,....
i am suprised and shocked. what is happening here? this was a movie for scifi and superhero fanboys.

It doesnt help that is hasnt opened yet in places like the UK. We have another week to wait before its release.

I guess it just didnt grab attention or wasnt as well received as expected. I'm not too sure why otherwise and without seeing it yet I cant judge:woot:
