Neill Blomkamp’s next project... ELYSIUM? - Part 1

I preferred District 9's action. That mech at the end was mindblowing. Never got that feeling in this. The exo-skeleton was a cool idea and looked nice but they never really did anything with it. No obvious feats of super-strength or anything.

Also agree the movie was super-cliche'd and don't understand the "intelligent blockbuster" remarks. Having social commentary automatically makes you intelligent now?

I heard some clips of Foster and what exactly was wrong with her vocals again? It sounded cool to me.

It is not about being intelligent, but as with District 9, this movie clearly was a metaphor for a real issue, in this case universal healthcare, and immigration. It was not just a bunch of humans attacking some alien ship orbiting earth.

I have no idea, but her accent as with her calves were distracting.

Does anyone know what song Kruger sang to the little girl? Also was he suppose to be German, Germanic/Nordic or just a crazy Aussie?

I suppose picking up a 200+ lbs man over one's head and smashing him down (looked to be INTO the floor) then picking him and throwing him across the room is not "super human"
Or Bending a car door.
OR Kruger stopping and breaking open that very solid looking security door.

Anyways the movie was Ok. Not as good as I had thought it might be.

Kruger's voice really bothered me (and the wife).

Elysium...good sci-film. Loved the political and social subtext, some of it had me laughing.

I didn't get how Spider's ship managed to get into Elysium without being detected. The security team on the colony is normally able to detect when illegals make attempts. I didn't get why Jodie Foster's character refused help.

Overall, good film though.

I think the crash with the first shuttle had everyone scrambling, which is why Spider went unnoticed. Not sure what you mean what you are asking about Foster's character.

I really enjoyed it. I can see why some people may not like the simpleness to it but it works. Love LOVE the action. Neill Blomkamp is still the only guy that can make a great video game movie.

I meant to say, why did she refuse help when she was dying.

Probably because she did not want the help of a "scum" from earth and felt sullied by the help.

I wouldn't go that far. It helps if done right. I don't think this movie did it fully right

Just a note to the mods, the poll doesn't work.

Oh, I assumed because she knew it was over. There was no way to save her at that point. She basically let Frey help until she knew it was over.

Kruger ( Copley ) is a loose cannon mercenary for defense secretary Delacourt ( Foster ) , but the President insists she no longer uses him. At one point they decommission Kruger. She asks for his help again , but when he does and finally shows up on Elysium she berates him . Kruger snaps and slashes her throat. Delacourt chooses not to let refugees help her and dies

Review

Neill Blomkamp writes & directs his 2nd big motion picture; he uses the sci-fi genre as a gateway for his tale of rich vs. poor, health care & immigration. After all it isn’t rocket science by any means that we live in a culture where we are more interested in care taking the rich & powerful, instead of helping everyone in today’s world, the ending to this movie reflects that, because this is a very simply movie, done as an action flick.

The year is 2154, our planet suffers from pollution & overpopulation & the rich have secured their own way of living by creating the space station Elysium, the medical technology has become so powerful that any sickness can be cured, bodies can be reconstructed as long as the brain is active & eternal youth has been gained, it is a man-made Olympus.

Major criticism on how the close ranged combat is viewed, its swift shaky cam while visceral combat should be viewed in wide and plain sight, but the camera keeps shaking so there is no real enjoyment from seeing the hero Max (Matt Damon) fights off the villains, which hinders the viewing experience.

What Blompamp excels at is the visual beauty of this world. Elysium is so sleek & clean, the robots are mobile & sleek & the office buildings are decorated by vines & flowers. While on earth the tattoo culture, environments & people are showing a ghetto atmosphere. The Spider (Wagner Moura) & his crime organization had an interesting visual outlook.

William Fichtner acts John Carlyle, his robotic auto-tune voice perfectly fits with Elysium’s rich elite with such comedic value, but the actor who steals the show is none other than Sharlto Copley as Kruger. Sadistic & vile, just a plain over the top assassin villain that the government uses against the poor to keep them in their place, he will be the most memorable thing out of this movie, even though the message should be the one.

Probably because I don't think you're suppose to, he was meant to be over the top so the movie wouldn't feel so serious.

It was an okay movie wasn't great, but not terrible neither. At first I found Fosters accent annoying, but after a few times hearing it wasn't bad. Now, the Kruger guy's accent was just plain bothersome almost Bane annoying.
The fight scenes were good, but I thought the editing was too quick paced and was hard to follow. I noticed they tried doing that in-out stop motion in couple of fights(like Total Recall's scene w/Collin at Recall and killing all those cops).
I dug the urban decay/futuristic feel to the movie and the realism of everything. Not many movies can pull it off with that feel of grittiness and realism(D9,Minority Report).
This might be one of those movies better at home!

Ok this may be weird...I just saw this in imax with my gf and I got pretty emotional. Very strange, I haven't felt like that during a movie in so many years.

It is one of my favorite movies ever....Matt Damon was fantastic, and Sharlto Copley is the villain of the year. Star of the movie is the visuals and Neil Blomkamp the director
