Neill Blomkamp’s next project... ELYSIUM? - Part 1

Yea, the whole virus plotline is kind of goofy.

Also, "I'm gonna upload the virus into my brain!". Uh, okay.

What the hell kind of accent was William Fichtner (Carlyle) going for, by the way?

i was shocked by the kruggar face blown off i didn't think it was gonna be that brutal lol

^Thundercracker-Fichtner (sp?) tells her in the movie she would have to be voted in as far as I remember, and I saw it last night, Fosters character smiles at this meaning she was confident she could manipulate the people to vote for her.

Yeah as mutch as people were harping on Foster, I thought Fitchner's accent was far more distracting.

I think it'd be tough to be worse than Foster's accent (or Foster in general) in this movie.

Copley was awesome, but aside from him, the acting in this was disappointing to say the least considering the cast.

I think Damon did well with what he was given. The film would have completely fallen without the bit of charisma he managed to bring to the character. He was also really good in the scene in the factory with the initial injury.

I thought he played his last scene in the movie perfectly as well, it could have been overly sentimental and bordering on cheesy considering the dialogue, but Damon totally sold it IMO.

I assumed they had those weird accents to set them apart from the more normal sounding protagonists.

I couldn't really tell what Foster was going for. French? German? ...Breton?

Though at least I could understand her. With Kruger I knew the accent, but could barely understand him.

One thing that isn't really made clear in the movie is whether or not Elysium actually rules Earth, and how exactly that works. The fact that they have embassies on Earth suggests they're independent.

With a name like Delacourt, and a French-speaking scene, I'd assume Foster was going for French, but sometimes she sounded more German and sometimes....not really like any actual accent. Her and especially Fichtner kind of came off like they were talking weird for the hell of it.

Maybe she's from Luxembourg. Though the first name "Jessica" is an odd choice.

Well William Fichtner just had an Anglo name like John Carlyle and IMO he talked weirder than Foster.

I thought Damon was servicable, which is about as good as he's ever been even at his best imo.

Cliched or not I just thought it was boring. If this was a fun and entertaining formulaic flick I wouldn't care. But this was dull, and filled with uninteresting dialogue through most the film. Besides some cool visuals and gadgets there's just not much going on. Felt like you could have cut an hour out of it and the film would essentially be the same. Really not much there in the script even though the film thought there was because of its themes. Had alot of potential but even the action was a let down imo. Too bad.

4/10

All I kept thinking watching it (besides more people need to explode) was when the hell will Cameron move forward on Battle Angel Alita.

This is word for word what I thought about this movie.

Really other than Spyder, I didn't see any problem with the dialogue in this movie.

i really enjoyed this film but imo i feel what brings the film down is it is far too simple and generic story and character wise

imo anybody could of played max not saying damon was bad

honestly i feel a prequel graphic novel would be more interesting

Imagine how much flatter this would have fallen with someone like Taylor Kitsch or Sam Worthington in the role.

The genre aspects of the film, in terms of not really being character based, much like a lot of 70s scifi, really required someone like Damon to humanize the character. Writing-wise he is essentially a type at best, or a blank slate. Its a fair criticism if you're just looking at the writing by itself. The film just relies on the actor in that respect.

A prequel in what way?

so we can learn more about max and his past, his time in prison, what made him turn to a life of crime and not got the way frey went

how Elysium came to be,what turned earth to such a disease ridden dump

it's not even about the generic story. Even as an action movie it fails. The action sequences are uninspired, the exo skeletton serves no purpose, save for a few throw away, and it's so badly shot and edited it makes me sick.

More definitely should have been done in this respect.

I do think the exo skeleton was under-used, at a few points in the movie Kruger and his guys were taking Damon out when he had the suit on. I know the suit didnt block out pain but one punch from it would surely have been enough to deal with them.

Although on the flip-side it showed how much of a threat they were to be able to take Max on even with his exo-suit.

I was thinking they too had exo skeletton. Krueger at least.

But what bothers me is that if you take away the exo skeletton from the movie, and instead, the pills they gave him allow him to move like usual, the story would be the same.

The pills werent working on their own, thats why they gave him the exo-suit. It was the combination of that and the pills which meant he could move around normally. We see him taking the pills before he gets the exo-suit and he is still stumbling and struggling, Spyder sees this also and thats why they give him the suit.
