What is Neo-Soul? It's not your typical R&B/Soul music. There's a mixture of influences and elements that never really caught on in the traditional mold of mainstream R&B, particularly electronic. It's been around for at least the past 15 years, mostly in the shadow of traditional R&B, but now it seems to be gaining more popularity and breaking out on its own. I like this music. It makes me feel good.

Some of the more well-known artists and groups include:

-Raheem DeVaughn
-Conya Doss
-Floacist/Floetry
-Dwele
-Musiq Soulchild
-Don-E
-The Foreign Exchange
-Zo!

I know there are some R&B fans around here...I'd like to hear your thoughts on the rise of Neo-Soul. Who are your favorite artists and which songs are you enjoying the most?

I would not really say that neo-soul is on any sort of ascent. The genre has been around for some time and hit its stride between 1995 (Brown Sugar) and 2000 (Who Is Jill Scott). By the time Floetic dropped in 2002, mainstream interest in the genre has been tepid at best save for a few mainstay performers that continue to draw an audience because of their consistent fan base (Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Angie Stone). As for the genre in general, I prefer it to modern RnB, primarily because neo-soul tends to be a better reflection of traditional RnB.

Anyways, some of my favorite artists include

Jill Scott
Erykah Badu
Mr. Jazz & Soulmatik
Gwen Bunn
Choklate
Don-E
Dwele
Floetry
Jose James
Maxwell
Vivian Green
Zo!
