Netflix Changing Pricing Structure

It seems like movie studios should try to adapt to the future instead of trying to kill Netflix and these other companies.

Several small indie studios are trying to make their own services. I know of a couple that opened up to streaming on Facebook, whether they are successful is another matter.

I'm surprised Kickstarter doesn't make a deal with filmmakers that get funded to set up a type of streaming service on the site.

Pretty much. Hollywood doesn't like the fact that consumers want choices, and they don't want to change they're old business models.

Even though I hate to say it, the lagging DVD sales was a good reason for Netflix to raise their prices (too bad they did it horribly and, imo, by too much). If demand goes up, a company should raise prices to reap the benefits (but they do it by too much and...well...Netflix found out what happens).

This should also be a sign to the studios that there's a market for streaming. So much of a market that demand for physical movies is drying up. I wonder how much Netflix has to charge, and how much DVD sales have to fall, before they realize this and compete in the streaming market directly (which should make Netflix's prices fall again).

That's a pretty good idea. Netflix is producing it's first original show, and new episodes of Arrested Development. They'd probably be happy to distribute more new content. Especially if they don't have to pay for (all of) it.

Arrested Development is perhaps the greatest thing I've heard about Netflix since the pricing and splitting fiascos.

Hollywood needs to catch up. When I first heard about UltraViolet, for example, it was about how it would be a revolutionary new streaming cloud service and how any movie I had I'd be able to get a digital copy via UltraViolet so long as I had a proof of purchase. Thus far it's only Warner Brothers promoting UltraViolet, with no assurances that the movies I have already purchased and should theoretically have a right to a digital copy are available... and to top it off, I can currently only utilize my UltraViolet copies of GL and GL:Emerald Knights through Flixster and the Flixster app for my mobile devices. That's some weak sauce right there.

I'll say the same about HBO. These guys are idiots unless they are completely changing the game for HBOGo with their Xbox Live deal. Currently you have to have a cable or satellite service and HBO subscription to use HBOGo and on top of that your service provider has to have a deal with HBO just for HBOGo. If I could subscribe to HBOGo via Xbox Live just so I can watch Game of Thrones I would, but as it stands they shouldn't go *****ing to my ISP if that show ends up torrented.

They are creating the perfect storm for piracy. And if they don't think the masses will rebel and get in on the torrent scene, they are out of their damn minds. People want easy, digital content. And we don't want to have to jump through the kinds of hoops they keep putting up. If I am paying money for a digital copy of something I sure as hell don't want it formatted to only work with one player, or in only one format. Or available through only one particular app. I want it how I want it, when I want it. On my terms, not on WB's or anyone else's terms.

If that were the case, then everyone would ditch their HBO subscription, because they can it get free online. HBO Go is meant to offer subscribers extra content and access when they are not at home. It's not supposed to be a Netfilx substitution. However, I could see them offer the service to non-subscribers for a monthly fee in the future if they felt it was profitable.

This is strange...I reactivate my Netflix account last Saturday, but thus far they have kept the spot where the DVD that they're sending to me vacant, as if there's no DVD scheduled to be sent to me even though I have my queue set up. I tried to click on the "Report DVD Shipping Problem" option, but it said I have no problem to report. And other sections like "Contact Us" to report problems cannot be clicked on. Does anyone have the same problem? If this continues, I might as well cancel it again and get my money back.

Well, I ended up calling Netflix two times, the first time the rep said they will be sending 3 DVDs to me (even though I have the 1-DVD plan), but I ended up receiving nothing. So I called again today, and the rep (different woman) told me that there was a problem with my account, and they finally fixed it, so I'll be getting a DVD in the mail tomorrow. I also got a bunch of emails saying that I've cancelled Netflix, renewed Netflix, and changed my plan from Streaming to DVD.

Is it just me or has Netlix gotten alot worse since the last time I subscribed to them?

I tend to cancel and renew my account all the time but I never have any difficulties with it. However, I only subscribe to the streaming only plan.

Problem with that being, HBO actually considers Netflix a direct competitor to HBOGo. Which is why they refuse to license HBO programs for Netflix streaming, and are now going to stop selling DVDs to Netflix at a discount.

I called Netflix the fourth time today, since almost 2 weeks have passed and I still don't have my DVD in the mail. They kept saying that there's a problem billing the payment to my CC, even though I've been using that card regularly. If they still don't ship it to me before end of the week I'll just cancel it, for good this time.

This is stupid! A huge selection of their movies are DVD only!

I hope this doesn't last very long or else they will lose customers and be replaced by a better service.

I dropped Netflix Instant recently. I feel like they haven't added anything good in the last few months. And now that I can get Amazon Instant through my PS3, there my be no going back... until Arrested Development starts, at least.

Interesting, sometimes when I buy a blu ray/dvd it comes with a free code to watch it on amazon instant video. So this would be cool but I'm not buying Amazon Prime.

The free stuff is limited to a lot of the same restrictions Netflix has to work with for their streaming service... However, you can rent individual new movies/shows through Amazon Instant basically right when they hit DVD or itunes. For example you can rent War Horse right now for $3.99.
