Finally, something to put a stop to the incessant rumours! It's been announced today in the New York Times that Netflix's streaming video service is officially coming to the Nintendo Wii.
It'll launch sometime in the Spring, and will be available to anyone with a Wii, an internet connection and a minimum $9 a month Netflix subscription. Like the PS3, Wii owners watching online movies will need to use a special streaming disc.
The Wii of course is not capable of outputting in high definition, meaning Netflix subscribers looking to use the streaming service on their Nintendo console will have their movies and TV show choices restricted to standard definition content.
The move means Netflix's online service is now available on all three current generation consoles, making it the most unlikely of industry standards.

Well now people that complain that Wii can't play DVDS can shut the hell up.

It's a little surprising that Nintendo decided to jump on the ball. They usually ignore what the other 2 systems are doing.

I doubt it. Netflix has a decent selection from its instant streaming, but it's by no means huge enough to substitute a DVD drive. Those who complain will still complain, I assure you

I'm pretty sure that not every title is HD-enabled from the streaming list anyway

actually they'd complain more. I find it ridiculous that the system is adding Netflix yet they havent added the basic ability to play DVD movies. You can rent on our system but you cant play the ones you already own.

I think the griping about the Wii needing a DVD drive is stupid. Most everyone has a standalone that would work better than the Wii anyways.

Heck I'm not that convinced that as many people that owned a PS2 ever actually used the thing as their DVD player. I know I didn't, and I wouldn't end up using the Wii as one either.

Also...you guys are kidding yourself if you think all the streaming shows on Netflix right now are all in HD.

I LOVE Netflix on the Wii. I have it on my Xbox in my bedroom and since the Wii is in my living room I can watch netflix pretty much anywhere in my house. It's fantastic!

I gave my Netflix Wii disk to my sister in Brooklyn :o

I don't need it since I have it on the PS3 and it will be getting a proper Netflix app sometime this year.
