Umbrella Academy Netflix Orders 'Umbrella Academy' Adaptation

Netflix just gave me another reason to keep them after they canned all the Marvel series. Knew nothing about the comics. I like Ellen Page. Now I love the series.

Finished the season last night and loved it. A really well made show with fun characters and an enjoyable but a little predictable plot line but that’s okay. I feel like all the characters were so fun to watch. Ellen Page is one of my favourite actresses so it was great to see her do such a great job with such a tragic character. I just wanted to hug poor Vanya. Klaus, Allison, Number 5, Hazel and Cha Cha were all awesome characters too. Luther and Diego were little pricks but they were meant to be lol. Felt bad for Luther initially but he really pissed me off there at the end :funny:. Oh and Grace/Mom and Ben were 2 characters that didn’t get that much screen time but I really liked them a lot for some reason. I mean Grace actually had some interesting interactions and mystery about her but Ben barely got anything. I still wanted to see more of him . I hope we get to see them more next season too. And I really need another season :hmr:. Netflix, please renew this show already!

Yeah, this is one show I need to get renewed asap.

Good news.

Question for those who read the comics... how closely does the show stick to them? I'm mostly wondering whether Vanya goes down a darker path like in the TV show or if she's a regular team member.

Only read series one and two and it's reasonably faithful to series one, with a few bits of series two thrown in ( Hazel and Cha cha and the Comission ), Vanya is arguably darker in the comic. Overall the characters are better developed in the show, especially Klaus.

Thrilled to hear about a season 2 !:applaud:wowe:

did they intentionally write Luther and Diego to be such huge bores?

Actually as dysfunctional as everything was, of all of them their friendship felt legit.
Probably cause of all of them neither of these two ever had any delusions that their father wanted anything good for them, or wasn't just using them.

I'm dissatisfied that this isn't a prequel series to Resident Evil. :(

I've only just started this and I like it well enough. Klaus is my favorite. :D

Have to say, after a second watch the show is much better than the comic because the characters are much much better developed.

Despite him being very stiff I feel sorry for Luther, whose real crime was being a dutiful son, I loved the "Dancing in the moonlight " sequence with him and Alison, too bad it didn't happen.

Really looking forward to season 2 !:applaud

Well I finally finished this last night what a show!

Got to say I loved it, had no idea what to expect going in but it was a very fresh take on the whole superhero team and pretty much all of their stories kept me intrigued.

The ending was great I really liked where it left off because it gave me the huge payoff of finding out what we had been waiting for all season while setting up the next one. (Anyone who's watched both shows might know what I mean when I say Titans sort of missed it for me anyway while the Umbrella ending/cliffhanger hit the mark)

The only thing it left me kind of worrying about is will the next season be done with all child actors? I really enjoy 5 but had grown attached to the other actors so not crazy about it if the case.

Couple of questions for anyone who's well versed in the comics or maybe just caught bits I missed.
  • What is Luther's power? I know he's strong but wasn't sure if that was a side effect of the serum.
  • Did Hazel & Agnes survive, I thought i seen a blue flash for them?
  • How did the dad know the apocalypse was going to happen, if it was ever explained?
I got to admit I nearly shed a tear for Pogo felt so bad for him as I initially thought he was a villain and to see he was only ever honouring the wishes of his master was even more tragic.

Final Rankings for the 7 (Liked them all but somebody's got to be first and somebody's got to be last lol)

7th. Ben/Number Six
He was good in every clip I seen him in but being honest he had to be last as we seen so little of him and got no interactions other than with him and Klaus.

6th. Diego/Number Two
After Ben it actually gets really hard to pick between them but I would probably put Diego next even though he had one of the more touching moments with Grace taking her out of the academy for the first time. I think he would be higher if they had maybe killed Patch later on as we hadn't really seen enough of them together to really care imo. I did love how out of everyone he was the one who was most like a street level superhero with the police radio working out of a dingy hideout.

5th. Allison/Number Three
Thoroughly enjoyed Allison's character the reason I have her so high up is a combination of her using her powers on her daughter which I think was meant to be relatable (like oh I would do that if I could) but just left me thinking you're a really bad parent lol and the fact she has no lines the last two episodes due to the injury hurt her I felt, even though I have to admit she did some great acting without talking in those episodes.

4th. Klaus/Number Four
Robert Sheenan is always a win loved him in Misfits so was great to see him back on screens. Each member has their own failings but Klaus's were probably the most understandable. If I could hear ghosts when I was sober id probably spend the majority of my time high as a kite as well. Very interested to see how his new power develops in season 2 although I do wonder if it will be used sparingly because of the budget.

3rd. Luther/Number One
I liked that Luther took pride in being number one. Its probably a lot to do with why he stayed the longest, went to the moon and even after discovering it had no purpose was probably the most forgiving of his father. He also makes the hard choice for them to move on Vanya which whether you like it or couldn't have been easy for him personally. Plus that scene where he was on pills having a rave was hilarious. I liked that we see him learning to be leader rather than just being one.

2nd. Vanya/Number Seven
Vanya is a weird one because im not going to lie her first couple appearances left me flat, nothing wrong with Page personally just didn't warm to her initially. However episodes 5-10 she was god damn magic, its a tough one to pick between her and Five for who I liked best but think she just misses out as I wasn't a huge fan of he from the get go. What made her so good was she was relatable if you had been treated like that your whole life you can sort of understand why she had the supressed darker side.

1st. Number Five
This was a tough one but I have to go with Five as my number one if that makes sense lol. Even crazier to think that the kid playing him is only 15. There was so much I liked about Five its hard to think but to name a few I loved how he managed to translate the mannerisms of an older dude in to his performance. Also really enjoyed how he sort of walked the line of morality at different times, there were moments where I could have seen him turning on everyone. Even that crack he made how he would have grown up to be an emotionally damaged man child like all his other siblings if he had stayed had a sadness to it as Five is far more damaged than any of them by what he's seen and done but it became such a norm for him he doesn't see it that way.

All and all a great watch and I can't wait for season 2!

I just finished this..,

After episode one which I found intriguing in terms of premise and characters I felt this was a terribly written show. Contrived, convoluted, pretentious, unengaging and filled with characters that were boring when they weren't grating. These were some good performers but the characters they were asked to give life to and the story being told and the way it was told was not my cup of tea at all. Trying too hard was the name of the game here. By the final episode, which felt like it took me forever to get to and I binged this over two days, I didn't care about anything. I just hung in to see how the end of the world plot introduced in the first episode would resolve itself. I had no familiarity with the comic so I am not comparing it to its source.

I am all for stuff that takes chances to be different but this was in my view all around just bad. Bad execution, bad characters, bad attempts at being "quirky", bad forced drama and bad humor. There was no buying into this world, no real understanding of the history, no explanation for a host of ideas it introduced, and what I have to say is the most piss poor group of wannabe X-Men I have ever been unlucky enough to have to watch.

Nothing outside of seeing these performers obviously giving their all to this dreck made me feel entertained or interested in the least.

This was a strike out on every single possible level. If others liked it, more power to them, but I cannot fathom how or why it would be looked on as entertaining or engaging.

See I just finished it and loved it. I'm won't argue that it was all original, I had Vanya figured out by the second episode and the rest went as I thought it would. Still, the cast was fantastic and I just didn't care about the predictabity. I'm glad it got renewed and will happily watch the next season. :)

It's definitely pretentious on occasion and at times I did have a bit of trouble following it. But I think the show knows when to have a pretty good time and while plenty of the characters annoy me to no end, that seemed to really serve the purpose of the arc of the first season. Namely a family raised by an emotionless *******, who by his very nature pitted these poor kids against each other and exploited their worst fears in a very sick attempt at "whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".

Fair enough. Respect your opinion. It had the opposite effect on me, I liked it more and more with each rewatch.
In fact I find that they are indeed " piss poor wannabe Xmen" as part of the show's charm. That and the impromptu dance sequences. They come across as incredibly screwed up and vulnerable, which anyone would be after that bizarre upbringing. It works for me.

Tough to choose a favourite character- Klaus is the most entertaining.

Preacher s1 was a blast. A "mutant" revamp is fine by me.
I'm checking out a comics vs show clip...and it's apparent they had to adapt for live-action expediency's sake.
