Umbrella Academy Netflix Orders 'Umbrella Academy' Adaptation

Random thing I noticed. The director of the episode where Luther intentionally gets knocked out in his fight must be a Guy Ritchie fan. First, Luther fights Robert Maillet, who appeared in Sherlock Holmes. The slo-mo shot where he gets punched is damn near the same exact shot at the end of Snatch when Brad Pitt nearly gets knocked out. And in the next scene (I think) the song “Golden Brown” plays, which is also in Snatch.

Ok, just finished season 2. Much better finale than season 1 as everything felt like it was going on the rails of time and no one could stop things. Which is really something I didn't need after watching Dark. Damn, that show got frustrating in season 2. Curious about season 3. Above all, they REALLY have to cut down the number of music montages, it was getting annoying, dull and lazy towards the end of the season.

Was that Robert Maillet ? I ask because he's nearly 7 foot tall, and Tom Hopper is around 6'6" , and he still looked about the same size as his opponent- camera angles I guess. It certainly looks like Maillet though .

I did notice the uppercut and shot of Luther flying backwards through the air being very similar to the shot in Snatch ( where Brad Pitt gets knocked down in the final fight). I think Golden Brown plays in Snatch after Gorgeous George gets KO'd by Brad Pitt.

Yeah I had to look it up but that was definitely Maillet. And yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Snatch so I don’t remember exactly where Golden Brown plays but you might be right about that. Love that movie. I wish Guy Ritchie’s films afterward were better overall but The Gentlemen was pretty good.

Also, side note... that Swedish Adele cover was great but that song has been ruined for me thanks to stupid Flat Earthers (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, just watch John Oliver’s recent segment on conspiracy theories).

I quite liked the cover - because it was one of those " That sounds familiar but I can't put a name to it." My wife has this CD of brazillian singers performing Shanian Twain and Celine Dion, similar experience when she plays it in the car.

I felt the Swedes were underdeveloped- nowhere near as enjoyable as Hazel and ChaCha.

It looks like Maillet, so it must be camera angles for the height difference. And Snatch is awesome, a very rewatchable film full of quotable lines.

"Why 'as he got a tea cozy on 'is 'ead ?"

I finished the first season and really liked it a lot.

Most of my issues stem from the character choices in that some of them are just come off as pretty damn stupid. But, I guess that’s the point since their Reginald was a crappy father.

Like for me, Five and Ben seem to be the only sensible ones. And I guess Klaus after sobering up.

I haven’t read the comics, but I did skim Wikipedia for the character descriptions. So, I’m interested in seeing how they reveal more about Reginald.

Right. As I was watching I’d just go “Ugh” so many times because I’m like, “For all they were taught, sense didn’t seem to be one of them.” Hahaha.

And as you said, the most sensible ones are the ones who got away from early enough (Five and Ben). I legit laughed at how Luther reacted to Vanya since it seemed so close to what Reginald would’ve probably done.

What’s also amusing is that if you read the comics character descriptions on Wikipedia...

You learn that Reginald didn’t give them their designated numbers based on how useful they were, but on the magnitude of their powers.

Another thing I liked was how everyone was pretty dismissive of Klaus and his addiction or didn’t care much about it beyond “That's just Klaus being Klaus” while Ben seemed to be the only one who would encourage him to find the strength to fight it.

I wanted to see what thoughts I shared after the first season and if they changed. Five and Ben are still my favorites since they're the least annoying.

Luthor was more entertaining even though he was still kinda pathetic.
Diego was amusing with his obsession to save JFK (and not thinking of the possible timeline effects).
Allison's story was interesting. I had actually wondered if they would touch upon race relations in the US.
Klaus was entertaining and less annoying compared to last season.
Five was awesome like before. Seeing his physically older self was cool.
Ben... kinda felt like there was less of him and I really wanted to see him interact more with everyone.
Vanya was amusing as her relationship dynamics more or less played out the same even with memory issues.
Reginald... liked a little bit more backstory one him. Still want to know more.

I liked season 1 and really enjoyed season 2 too. I guess it had the luxury of established characters but overall I found it was paced better and benefited from been a more 'linear' or succinct plot, had fewer 'boring/slow' parts and I enjoyed that the finale was a 'boss fight' (not to say that the finale of S1 was bad). I think S1 suffered with the Vanya romance plot and her plot in general I just found very boring and that it slowed the season down, so I wasn't looking forward to it when it looked like we were getting the same again but I thought Vanya's story was done better this time around and the season didn't suffer 'cos of it.

I like all the characters (and actors) and their individual stories, although it was a shame that Luther didn't have a bit more to do. Really enjoyed Ben's arc in this one but Five (and Aiden Gallagher) is the real MVP (Marvel need to snap him up for something, Harry maybe). In an alternate timeline, Tom Hopper and Robert Sheehan would make a great Thor/Loki.

In general it was all good but in particular I liked the setting and backdrop of the story, getting a bit more wacky stuff (AJ), hope to see more of that, the Reginald stuff, Klaus and Ben stuff, Five's fight scenes and how they ended the apocalypse...

I don't really think I disliked much of it apart from maybe Luther not having a lot to do and
the stuff with Vanya transferring some of her power to Harlan - I'm sure it will come back in some way but not sure how I felt about that.. Don't know if it happens in the comics but it felt more like 'just something to do' or a tool to get the characters back in one place than it did in serving the plot.

Also,
in the opening sequence of ep1 we see Five arrive and how everything is messed up and the whole team was fighting against the US army (which to me was saying that all of them cause the apocalypse) but when Five goes further back in time, it was only Vanya that causes the apocalypse. I don't know if there was an explanation for this or I missed something but I wasn't too sure what was going on with this bit (my guess is that Five changed it by going further back to save the team?)...

I can see where people are coming from talking about the overuse of music and musical sequences - and whilst it does feel like they are trying to 'live up to' the popularity of the dance sequence from season 1 - I don't mind it.

Not sure if this is taken from the comic but I think that they had Five confront himself and give him the correct (or new) equation so that when his older self goes back in time, he still ends up in his young body but it now means he can age normally, so that they don't have to worry about Aiden getting older.

Really like the set up for season 3!

I rewatched a few last night (as I was doing other stuff at the same time when I originally watched) but once I got into it I couldn't stop and binged the rest till 7am on a weekday! (altogether the beginning of Episode 3 until the end) Amazing second season and I definitely prefer it to the first. Also it massively sets up season 3 too with that ending.

My only real issue with this season is how no one came to Diego defense when their father just down right insulted him beyond measure but were proud Luthor stood up to him and were there for Vanya. Diego to me always has everyone else back even when he might not want to sometimes but no one ever has his.

Just watched two episodes of season 2 - I have the same complaints like i had with season 1.
it tries to look cool with its cinematic comicbook-visuals and its use of famous music...but it never really got me.
Tbh the use of music is quite annoying at times...reminds me of Suicide Squad

Dude. Tom Hopper directly references Snatch in this interview with regards to the fight scenes.

So you were spot on there.

Lila was a great new character, and I’ve always loved the Handler. I hope we see more of the dad in future seasons. He really is a bit of a bastard, but certainly has interesting history.

I have a theory about that . I imagine to qualify for tax credits the production company probably has to use a certain number of Canadian actors. Ellen Page is Canadian, and so is Colm Feore, who plays Sir Reggie. As such I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him. Just a theory of course.

Interesting. If that keeps them in then it’s fine with me. :cwink:

Oh a few other things I meant to mention.

The nitrous oxide scene was hilarious.

I'm a big fan of team films and the family element here is a big thing for me too. When the
gang finally comes together and gets behind Vanya as a family, it's a great moment. I was worried when Vanya asks for help and gets turned down, but it turned out to be a good fakeout lol. I was genuinely thinking they were turning down her down and that the show was about to get too "edgy" for me. I'm fine with conflicts and tensions within a dysfunctional team/family, but I also need my cathartic moment at some point too.

It was also nice seeing Ben miss his family and interact in some way and it's a shame he's gone but at least we get the new version going forward.

I really liked the first season when I watched it but then afterwards, some of the flaws became more obvious to me. So I wasn’t really sure if I’d like season 2 as much but it was a huuuge improvement and I ended up binging it in a few days. Vanya, Klaus, Ben and Five were great as before but even Luther, Diego and Allison were a lot more likeable this season. The flaws are still there but better managed this time. Though it really felt like they went overboard with the pop music. And the slo-mo. I don’t remember being this distracted by the slo-mo in season one.
Best thing for me was seeing Vanya be more in her control of her powers and her family finally being supportive of her. There were a few moments like Luther in the barn in episode one and Diego when he realises Vanya causes the apocalypse again that I was worried that her family was going to turn against her again but so glad to see them not being total dip****s lol.

There was a lot of really good stuff but right now I just remember stupid laughing at Öga Foröga :funny: and then tearing up at Ben’s “Can you hug me as I go?” :csad: I was a little angry that they ended his character like that after not giving him much but then of course he’s back at the end all emo now :funny:. I really like him even though he’s barely been in the show so far so I hope they give him something substantial next season. Oh and the reunion scenes were really sweet and touching. Klaus and Allison, Ben and Diego, the whole family getting back together for the first time. They do stuff like that really well and it kinda makes up for the flaws.

Oh and can’t wait to be properly introduced to the Sparrow Academy next season .

Season 2 has certainly done a better job with the characters that weren't received as well first time around (even though I already liked most of them).

Quite a few people have mentioned that the music has gone a bit overboard this time. I can understand that as it's happening every other scene now lol. I like it myself, it makes it halfway towards being something like a musical. :cwink:

Haha, Olga. Ben's final scene was done well, even though I would have liked this version of him to hang around for future seasons. At least it will be fun to see the Sparrow version. A proper reunion and the family finally acting together is what I've been waiting for and I was really happy to see it. The final scene makes me want to binge season 3 right now haha.
