Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Awesome!

The best one yet.

All these people doing (wonderful) manips might want to consider doing some of a clean-shaven Geralt...

Yeah, I want to see a clean-shaved version too.

Last few years I feel same. Most movies become fun popcorn cashgrab CGI flicks to forget on 2 hours and move on till next one. All hail to exceptions. TV on other side is where stories are, where characters live, where you get to know them and connect to them. You can spend 10+ hours with them instead just two. And given competition this days on TV, from Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. People will choose to watch only good ones.

I will argue TV>Movies this days. Specially TV shows which can afford budget wise cinematic scenes.

For sure. There are still a lot of crappy TV shows out there but it's not hard to find good ones.

I have hard relationship with TV series. Because of much larger length, everything needs to be almost exactly to my liking, otherwise I won't watch it. Because it takes much more time to get into the story, the characters and so on. TV series are much slower. With movies it's easier. There's only 2 hours and story is finished. So even if the film is awful, it doesn't take much investment to enjoy redeeming qualities.

There are TV series that blew my socks off - The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, OZ, GoT (first 4-5 seasons), True Detective (only first season), Dexter... But that's about it. I just struggle to find something among new series.

I prefer long-term storytelling, because I get more engrossed and find the payoffs much more rewarding. If they're good, that is. I ain't talking about Lost. :p

Any indication when filming will start? I really can't wait to get our first look at Geralt.

If long-term storytelling is able to keep you interested till the very end... It happens extremely rarely in my case. Even if some of them start well, they just run out of breath after a few episodes and you feel like you wasted your time because you can't go on, but spent hours watching and getting into it.

Considering he's struggling with the accent, I agree. The thing is, though, they probably need Wolf school witchers to have the same accent. After all, they're taken as babies/kids.

To be fair, Geralt fakes a Rivian accent so a Rivian accent might be a British one in this world. I mean they can get away with it.

I agree. Honestly, I'm much more engaged by TV shows than I am in most films these days because they give you more of a chance to get to know a cast of characters. TV has gotten so good in this regard that oftentimes, films feel rushed to me and I find myself less likely to connect to characters unless they are written really, really well. If this is good, it could really be a smart career move for Cavill.

Yeah for whatever reason the Wolf School Witchers, Viper school Letho of Gulet, and some other select characters use American accents. Letho basically sounds like he's from Virginia or the deep south. I mean it's set in an alternate version of the world. I don't think the Witcher world is our world, or rather it's an alternate version of the world, like an alternate 13th century version of Europe. Triss' accent also sounds American.

It's definitely an alternate version of our world because Ciri
accidentally brings the Black Death to the world of the Witcher by jumping through a plague infested Medieval Europe of our world. They just call it the Catriona plague.

Would you like to see them use the style of fighting from the game? I've not read the books so don't know if that style was purely for the game or described in the books. Could the tv series even use it? As they only have the rights for the books not game (i believe).

Personally would love to see it adapted, would set it apart.

I've heard of the Catriona Plague, and I've read all the books except the Lady of the Lake, and I dont recall the books ever connecting it to our world's bubonic plague or indicating Cyri brought it from our world. Jog my memory.

Is there any chance filming will begin this year? I really can’t wait to see set pics of the characters and sets.

In Lady of the Lake
Ciri travels between worlds to get away from Eredin and mistakenly lands in a town ravaged by the bubonic plague in our medieval europe. She can travel through space AND time. When she teleported back to her world she landed in Nilfgaard with a flea carrying the plague and it snowballed after the flea infected a cat and so forth. Some theories claim she landed in a future of her timeline and it begins a sort of paradox but based on the images she saw (Crusader crosses and priests, language she didn't understand symptoms and dead of the disease being described exactly like the bubonic plague victims) its more likely it was Medieval Europe.

Thing about Geralt in beards, in the books he prefers to go clean shaven. He hates growing out a beard because it gets itchy. That's why In the games, I always go with this look:

I always go with a rebel elvish haircut and a beard.

I think the shorter hair looks more handsome and the shorter hair moves less which causes less clipping with the swords and armor.

I keep short hair cause I like it short and no beard because Geralt likes his face soft and baby smooth.

pretty sure the only time i even used that feature was when him and yen went to that ball that was basically at the iron islands lol

also, hopefully the wild hunt isnt a part of the (at least) first season... I think we've got enough White Walker action coming next year

When I played the games, I didn't read the books prior to that, so I didn't bother with canon. In Witcher 3, I switched between three hairstyle - short flowing, shaved temples and the default. Kept the beard short with regular visits to barbershops. In Witcher 2, it depended on the path. Iorveth (muh baby) - long elven hair (despite elves all having short haircuts). Roche - tried to look more military with shaved temples.
