Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I didn't even notice her in the trailer. Sad. She is one of my favorite things about the games, and that is saying something.

This is Triss from the trailer I believe:

Triss looks awful. Definitely not gonna get over that. I also really didn't need to see Yen's origin. I liked the subtle hints in the book because it added mystery and intrigue as to why she is the way she is, seeing it in the trailer just made me laugh at how over the top it looks.

The books tell what was shown here. She was a deformed woman, a hunchback, and she used her magic and training to change her appearance.

I'm just gonna assume that is actually an incompetent Doppler that's trying to impersonate Triss and failing miserably. :o

The books dont outright describe her previous appearance, its hinted at by Geralt's own deductive reasoning and knowledge of sorceresses. Even then why show it? Yen was introduced perfectly in the books and her conflict revolves around her desire to be a mother.

Loved the Trailer. I'm still not 100% sold on Henry as Geralt but everything else looks amazing, especially Anya as Yennefer :hrt:

Not sure myself....just more pensive, pained, looks from Henry who I actually rate as a decent actor.

She looks older then Yen.

Oh and nothing like Triss.

Yeah maybe that particular shot doesnt help but she looks a lot older than she should do. It doesnt seem also like they have even attempted to put any effort into her as nearly as much as Geralt, Yen and Triss to look "right" which is odd, the outfit, the hair none of it says Triss which is why most people didnt even realize it was her probably, lol. Guess we just have to hope they get her character right at least.

Damn, this is the last place I expected to see Cavill's "why so serious" face complaints. It's Geralt, not Superman.
Triss's flaming red hair in Witcher 3 is a CDPR change, her hair color in the books is described as chestnut.
They changed her hair first to dark red (Witcher 2) and then to bright red (Witcher 3). In the first game Triss looks like this:

Hair color as described in the books. Frankly, books contradict themselves a bit. It's said that it's her distinctive feature, but chestnut hair isn't something super-rare. Games did the right thing to give her more extreme unique color that you won't find anywhere else.

So after watching the trailer two more times and giving it a lot of thought so I've got a lot of thoughts. Overall I give the trailer 3/5, while excited it did make me worried about things or characters I wasn't to worried about and improved my thoughts a little on a couple of things or characters. I also have to wonder who this trailer was targeted at. It just seems like it's more for book and game fans while at the same time seeming like they're saying you know who Geralt is check out the characters you might not know. Anyway here are my thoughts.

Geralt
So from the start Cavill was and still is the thing I'm least worried about. My two ni t picks would be his eyes. First I think his yellow eyes should be a brighter yellow. Second I think the potion eyes look like Geralt s bleed from his eyes at a glance. I'm fact when I first saw the thumbnail on YouTube I was like why are Geralt's eyes bleeding but once I saw the scene I was like I get it now. So I think the potion eyes needs something added to the effect to show that it's a result of him taking the potion based on what little we saw. The one thing that kinda worries me is the show runners comments about taking line away from Cavill and him only having one line in the trailer. I figure and hope this is nothing more than me reading into the lines based on a worry of them trying to hide Cavill in the trailer. I get that the medallion is based on the book bit I much prefer the 3d wolf head, even the Polish movie/show used a 3d wolf's head.

Yennifer
I was most worried about Yen but not as much after the trailer. I'm still not a fan of the casting and my opinion is based on the books but can't deny that more than likely the game in forms my opinion a little. I just don't see Yen when I see the actor and I hope I'm proven wrong. I also hope her violet eye aren't just an affect from magic use or from her transformation. Also I think she looks to young. I saw picture of Anya, Cavill and Freya today from a interview and Anya and Freya look no more than a few years apart in age. If they go with the Yen is a mother figure to Ciri root in the show visually it gonna look off so the story and acting better steal the show in this aspect. I also see more of a deformed in general look and less hatchback to Yen in the trailer. I do hope I'm wrong and can get back on here and say I was wrong.

Ciri
Before the trailer I really wasn't worried about Ciri other than there's no way that picture is of a aged up Ciri in the Brokilon Forrest. And yet it does in fact seem like they're changing Ciri 's age to fit a teenage Ciri into stories where she should be 6 or so years younger. Unless I missed it the was no shot of her green eyes which should be something that is a standout feature not subtle. I thought for sure Freya was just the main older Ciri and that there would be a younger Ciri as well who is only in a episode of two. It just seems like a lot of the Geralt and Cori stuff I was excited to see will be very different, completely changed or even overlooked. This is now the thing I'm most worried about.

Also I just don't buy this Yen being older the this Triss. While book Triss may not have bright red hair it is a easy way to spot Triss based on visuals alone. If I didn't happen to recognize the actor I would have though Geralt was talking to some random character I did know. That all I can think of for now I'm sure I'll have more to comment on.

I agree that the games made the right call with changing that, but it's still a change and I'm not gonna expect a show that isn't adapting the games to mirror that. The only thing that's more accurate about game Triss's appearance is her skin color. Triss looking older than Yen honestly makes sense due to her appearance not being entirely the result of magic like Yen's is. Yen being older is something that should be conveyed through performance and not necessarily appearance. Book Triss also actively avoids clothing with large amounts of cleavage like the outfits game Triss wears in the first and third games.

I’m no doubt going to draw a lot of probably deserved ire when I say this... but a TV series that included more stuff from the games would have been a bit more exciting. The iconography (double swords for instance) and general look of the game is fabulous, and can’t help feel but this TV series would have benefited from it. This looks a little more generic fantasy to me. Lost the personality the game gave the character.

Eh, I'm not asking for the show to adapt game decisions. The show will be it's own thing. I'm just saying that the game's decisions weren't entirely baseless. Ultimately, it's rather superficial stuff. I wish the show had more distinct look, it's probably my main concern at this point. It has the budget, but it looks like a mix of other popular fantasy productions visually.

I read the clips descriptions and Yen's one (with a dead baby) is really haunting. I wish they released them too. But it's not gonna happen so far in advance. Plus SDCC exclusivity. I'm glad they picked a quality actress for the role even if at expense of book/games appearance.

Yeah. I’m not sure when this comes out so I suppose they have time to show more and give people a sense of the story. But I feel like the “less is more” approach would have been better here. Give me some idea of who the title character is and what Witchers are. Give me some clue as to where this takes place (Is it prehistoric Europe? Is it a whole other planet?). Give me a bit of the two other central characters and maybe some quick action shots. I think they are banking on fans of the books and the games knowing what’s going on and maybe they do but the rest of us are left scratching our heads.
Exactly.

Not sure if i loved or hated it. Only a teaser though. So still excited.

Not knowing anything about the books or the games, this looked fairly generic to me. That might just be the trailer which felt like there was a lot going on but none of it was very clear.

i know nothing about the witcher. this trailer didnt sell me the tone or the basic story or worldbuilding. this trailer looks like its for season 2 and the fans. yeah yeah it was for comic con.

Cavill looks like he was build in a lab to be the perfect looking movie star. acting? he has all the time the same face that he used in movies for action scenes . thats his serious acting ''mode'' right?

The author has a lot animosity towards the games so I expect this show to deliberately ignore a lot of the games changes which is stupid in the business sense but I get it. I've always felt that this show is Sapkowski's attempt to reclaim the IP in the public's eyes.

Not sure why they needed to turn Brokilon into Wakanda, though. They even look almost identical. The only thing I outright disliked about the trailer.

Totally agree. That was the one part of the trailer where I was just straight up "Eww." Very SyFy channel moment.

The rest of the trailer was fine. The footage itself looked fairly polished, clearly this will be one of the higher budget Netflix shows, as we all expected. Can't say anything in particular sold me on it, though, other than maybe the two monster shots and the final shot of Geralt. I was intrigued by the Yennefer stuff but the writing and acting is really gonna have to follow through for the character with that set up and I'm not sure how much confidence I should have in either.

Sold on Geralt, cinematography doesnt look bad, doesnt look great tho. Appreciate potion effects at the end of trailer.

Still not feeling Jen and Ciri. Story plot seems fine, but not feeling casting. And that's what bugging hell out me.

It's not even just the color; I straight up don't like her hair. She doesn't make much of an impression in the trailer compared to Yennefer and Ciri. But changed from the books or not, I don't see anything of the Triss I do know there.
