Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Or maybe part of judging the show on its own merits involves questioning why the supposed lead character never speaks.

Or maybe wait until you have actually watched an episode before judging it?

Never said not to question it. I'm saying to just watch the show and see if it works in context. You can see that's not the same as counting lines right?

I am going to judge what they show me. No one forced them to show a bad CGI creature in their trailer. This was the first Stranger Things 3 trailer. Out in March, for a July release. The CGI creature at the end is quality and did not change much if at all with the release of the season.

but to be fair this is Netflix flagship at the moment they was going to make sure they have all the $$ they needed.

this is a risk for them so who knows how much $$ they allowed them to to play with hopefully alot would like to see alot more monsters in the show but that's probably not plausable

Of course. And maybe it works in this context, I don’t know. It’s just a tad concerning when you have a character who, from what I understand, isn’t your typical “strong, silent” type and it sounds like they’re turning him into that due to a lead actor who is most famous for a role where he barely speaks.

Again, maybe just watch the show first before freaking out over line count.

I don’t want to be all negative here; I’m pulling for this show and for Cavill himself. I just hope his role isn’t just him fighting the whole time and barely speaking. I know that works with some action hero characters like Mad Max and Jason Bourne but I feel like those are outliers. Even “classic” action heroes like John MacLane and most of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s characters have had a lot of memorable dialogue.

Geralt isn't Mad Max (and Cavill isn't Gibson or even Hardy). It's certainly worrying when it's another role of Cavill where a character is reduced to grunting and looking concerned. Maybe in the actual show it won't be so bad, but I saw Cavill's grunting roles and I'm not impressed.

I joked in the past that Cavill is hired exclusively for his hunk body and hoped that solid book material will give him something to play with in form of actual dialogue. But it doesn't seem to be a joke anymore.

That's fair. But then again, I would say that when the first season of Stranger Things came around, it wasn't the flagship show, and had much better CGI. Same for Game of Thrones during its first season. Which was 8 years ago now.

Geralt can fluctuate between being the strong silent type and being very mouthy. But I would say Geralt in general is someone who sits back and listens.

The weirdest thing about that though is that Cavill has like the exact opposite body you'd want for Geralt. Geralt should be in great shape, but he is a mover, not a hulk.

am I the only one that has seen Man from uncle he was good in that also the Tudors
so I have confidence he can pull it off but it is worrysome that when he got casted they shorten some of Geralts dialogue if you believe that I don't but anyway I HOPE TO THE FANTANSY GODS that this works been hyped for this for quite a while

Have i Mentioned that I hate the Triss casting yet lolol but I've moved on

Lauren S. Hissrich fantasized about Cavill when she was writing the script. So it's probably a bigger influence than the books and general logic.

Of course movie magic will make Geralt move fast enough, I believe. But realistically having weight and muscles like that would seriously slow him down. On the other hand, there was Muhammad Ali and, in games case, Letho of Gulet. Plus witchers aren't ordinary humans thanks to mutation.

I thought he was fantastic in the Man From Uncle. I never liked him on the Tudors, but I also feel like that was the point. :funny:

I think for most people Henry is either overrated or underrated. He is pretty strong in the right roles. But it needs to be the right role for him, because he doesn't have a lot of range.

I will never move on from the Triss casting!!!! :argh:

Yeah, he was good in both of those and he had plenty of dialogue there. But his dialogue as Superman was often minimal, particularly in BvS where he was practically a mute. And in some scenes in that film, when he did speak... it wasn't great. He's pretty good at brooding but I hope that's not all there is to his character here. I want to see some charisma, like he had on The Tudors.

But BvS was barely a movie for any involved so I don't blame him for that hot mess we all know who's to blame but don't want to bring that in here lol

I agree but if I watch this whole show and Cavill barely speaks (and when he does, it sounds stilted and flat), as much as I hate to say it, I may owe Snyder and apology at that point.

I think the issue with Henry's Clark/Superman is the writing and direction. Henry has a natural charisma that fits Superman imo. He can come off kind and wholesome. The issue was he was asked to basically play depressed the entire time.

Why do they cast Cavill for sad/stoic mute hunk rules?

yes "if" he doesn't but we won't know until the end of the year hopefully and Snyder would never get an apology from me for turning Batman into a murdering maniac but like I said not the place for this tired convo ;)

Ciri and Yen barely have any lines either in the trailer so it was just a teaser afterall
do we think those 2 are not going to speak in the show ? not at all lets exercise a little patience but I do realize i'm suggesting that to a bunch of maniacs who post here everyday

This, I actually didn't have a problem with it so much in Man of Steel because he was scared, alone an outcast etc & by the final scene of Man of Steel I thought next film he'll be a little more content with himself after he'd been revealed & largely accepted.. but they sadly carried that narrative forward into BvS, which while it created a story point for that film, it came at the cost of the character in my opinion.

Anytime you see Henry Cavill do any interviews or TV show, I'm thinking to myself, if they just let him play himself he is perfectly fine for not just Superman, but any sort of role that requires some charm or charisma. Both he & Armie Hammer were very good in Man From Uncle at that.

The fact that the showrunner only thought of Cavill in the role is frustrating when there were much better fits for Geralt out there *coughZachMcGowancough*
