Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I done half a season 2 at this point. And I must say even though I love some moments, story overall moves too slow for me. To much of screentime feels like filler for now. Too much of it is slow burn even if those moments later get important.

I hope it picks up pace dramatically and hope this season is not another teaser for new season. Season is for now definitely improvement over season 1. But given how plot slowly moved in S01 and we were forced due timelines and world building to grandiose backtours to eventual meet between Ciri and Geralt I expected bit better pace after 4 episodes in second season.

The 5th episode I think is really good. Hopefully it picks up for you from there.

Ok I watched rest of the show and I while my problem with pace got solved I must say now that I officially dislike the show. Plot involving where witch tells Jen needs to sacrifice Ciri for getting back her powers, decision to kill a Roach. Some idiot mage portaling to Kaer Morhen (how the f would he even know where it is), somehow beating Vesemir (making him not only buffon but incompetent in skill) and getting hands on Ciri's blood. Then we having evil Ciri killing Witchers in sleep. Also Geralt being adult one in relationship with Vesemir? Did i say I disliked portrayed of Vesemir. Instead being reverse where Geralt goes for advice to him Geralt is one giving advices. I mean who the *** wrote this. This show made me so angry that I decided I will not watch season 3 if it ever is released.

Maybe some people like this stuff but man they really gone off the rails.

See, I would have named those, if they weren't movies. I love the Mando and use to watch Young Indy. And neither of them came close to what we saw in the films in that regard. Television is making strides, but you aren't going to find one on the level you are suggesting, not yet. So I think it's fair to compare it to the best television has to offer, and it isn't close.

Well, if we are going to reference TV examples, my recollection is that BSG had great production design and distressing.

Nah, not stronger than Game of Thrones, but stronger than Witcher at least, although I was moreso thinking props, sets, and set dressing than costumes.

I liked Season 2 less than 1 but still liked it enough to continue. I miss the Geralt side quests of the first season and Season 2 went quite heavy emphasizing the politics and rival factions like Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire and there's also a bit too many conveniences such as where people are at any given moment. Season 2 is heavy on the 'one overarching plot', and if you are not into the one plot, you're gonna have less of a good time. Ciri and Geralt are still pretty cool, I liked the Ciri training scenes and the monsters of the first couple of episodes.

episodic side quests and monster slaying (S1) > political gibber-gabber (S2)

Yes that’s what made me make that comment as to that point book readers here seemed to dislike this season. Sorry that it didn’t live up to what you were hoping for.

This series is americanised version of Wiedźmin, everything so special about it, slavic folklore and mythology, cynicism is lost. This have nothing to do with the books. Nothing. 95% of season 2 is made up by the writers of this show.

Telling when the games, despite some interesting choices, made a far better, and true to the spirit of the Witcher, adaptation...AS A GAME.

Games and book series have a lot more time to work with than the 8 hours a season the show does. Books can also convey big exposition dumps in a way that are awkward on screen.

That said I could've done with a lot less of the politics/factions and had more of the mythology and folklore than the show did in Season 2 if we're trading emphasis. Though from what I've been told the books had politics in them as well. In the show's second season it's dreadfully dull and I don't care about the other characters that are immersed in them...the three mains (Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer) are off on another part of the show mostly away from that in Season 2; Ciri and Yennefer had more of a part of the smaller political part of the show in Season 1.

Geralt and Ciri are the main protagonists of the series, Yennefer is forced into this story, at this point most of the stuff you saw is not from the books, including her "origins".

Thats pretty much clear since very early in season 1...and im okay with that because of that.
I made my peace with that super early.
Sure that sucks, a more Faithful adaption would have ruled so much more, but i dont think that ever was in the cards to begin with.

As a very loose adaption, its okay, its watchable...but it left a ton of potential in the dirt just because.
Why they werent more faithful i dont get, wouldnt have broken their backs at all...but im not losing sleep over it.

I have a bit of a case of "Schadenfreude" since Sapkowski was giving the Games so much flak and was acting like if he would have been involved, things would be "better".
Well he is involved in the series and people arent super in love with it, so yeah.XD XD

I’m glad to finally get more regular fantasy content so am probably a bit more forgiving than most. Was a great feeling to watch Wheel of Time and have this drop before that first season is finished.

Just play Witcher 3 GOTY. On Epic store till January is on discount for 10 bucks PC version. I already played it on PS4 but given I have decent PC I may decide pull a trigger.

Thanks. I have played Witcher 2 and 3 on Xbox but not finished as got stuck somewhere. I would like to have them on pc too so thanks for the heads up. I also own all the audiobooks but haven’t made a proper start.

Played my 5th playthrough of w3 the past month to get back into this world game is phenomenal you find new things everytime

As a non-book reader, nor having played any of the games, I absolutely loved S2. It was even better than S1 for me (which I also loved).

More focused plot, better set design, monster fights and I can't wait to see where they go at S3!

Only 3 episodes in but this is where I am at, loving it so far
