Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I may have to watch the final seasons for the lols.

I truly feel this could've surpassed Game of Thrones. They had everything there plus a finished set of books and an energized fanbase due to the games. They fumbled an easy win right at the end zone. It makes me sick.

Did anyone watch the final Cavill season? If so, is it worth checking out?

I’m not the biggest fan of his but I did like him in this role for the most part. But after the Hemsworth announcement, my interest pretty much died. I don’t know why but that guy just does nothing for me as an actor. It’s not even that he’s bad, he’s just… there.

Yeah nothing against Hemsworth he just doesn't look right for this. Cavill is limited as an actor but as Geralt I felt he was really good. Not feeling Hemsworth already.

I didn't even watch it because we already knew he was leaving the show. Then I heard about some of the other changes, and I decided to peace out.

As someone who actually liked seasons 1 and 2, 3 was a huge step down and could see why Cavil had checked out after it, it was a mess and going nowhere and you could tell he knew.

I really need to play more of those games. I played a bit of III but it felt like coming into a movie halfway through so I was all pretty lost. But that was before I watched the show so maybe it would make more sense now. Or I should probably just play that remake when it comes out.

I really hate the showrunner now more than ever lol I knew she was lying about being faithful to the source material and understanding it when I briefly interacted with her on Twitter.

Hate is a strong word for me regarding Lauren Hissrich. I enjoyed when I got to interact and speak with her at Comic-Con, and she seemed like she had a good grasp on the material at that point. I think everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt at first. I think she also did receive some unwarranted hate at first based on dumb rumors spread by online hate grifters.

I will also say in her defense, she had huge expectations because she wasn't just dealing with the book fanbase, but the video game fanbase as well. And I'm sure there are plenty of Witcher gamers who never read the books as well. But like once we saw the finished product, I think at that point we can be more honest about our criticisms and disappointment in her work.

But just things like the Nilfgaard armor, which was just whack, and at least they fixed it in Season 2, but darn that was bad. And I think they tried too hard to make Nilfgaard the bad guys when in the world of The Witcher it's not that black and white.

More than anything, I'm disappointed. I think I could accept the changes in the first season in terms of adaptation, but Season 2 went over the deep end.

You're right, hate is a strong word, but I was definitely annoyed with a lot of the changes she made, when she said she wouldn't, some of the casting for the characters, and the characterisations of everyone outside of Geralt.

Cavill was right to leave, and I feel bad for the guy, because his Geralt started to grow on me.

I forgot about Nilfgard scrotum armor. :weeping:

I think some of the casting was just way off from the start for some characters and always felt like they were muddling their way through rather than having a clear vision from the start. The first season was very odd with its time jumping around and then they just ignored that style in the second season all together.

Not having any ties to the games didnt help either as that was such a huge following its now what a lot of what is in built to the larger fanbase already in terms of expectations and look of the "Witcher" world. Not having that asthetic to use hurt a lot as well. May seem unfair given that it was purely based on the books but the games are too big to ignore now and are the main reason a lot of people even read the books in the first place.

Finally watched the teaser...eh its okay.
I dont think there was anything they could have done that would turn it around completely...for that the people were just having too high expectations in the Witcher netflix show and they failed at delivering that.

So im taking it for what it is and can enjoy it somewhat.

To be fair I think they are still doing a fifth season so maybe that includes Season 5 because I think they shot them back to back.

That said I have no idea how Netflix makes a profit.

They had a gross revenue of $39 billion in 2024. And it looks like they average spending $16 billion a year on "content". And there are a bunch of other little things that it is too late at night to dig into in the financial statements. All for about roughly $7 billion in net income.
