The biggest news is confirmation of something brought up on the RUNAWAYS topic; that the Whedon/Ryan run on RUNAWAYS is lasting a measily 6 issues. So much for a stable creative team after BKV leaves. That'll surely boost the book, but for only half a year? Then what? I really care about that book and was willing to give Whedon a shot, but 6 issues is barely more than a fill-in job. Hell, Tieri on NEW EXCALIBER did that many.
So I guess come October (assuming none of the 6 issues are late) we'll be seeing a new creative team? Oy.
I also "love" how all of Joe's "genies" involve reverting the MU back to a status quo from the 70's. Bringing mutants back from almost acting like, gasp, an actual minority community to being endangered, and now justifying any hero to fight another, what next? Commies?
The fact that anyone thinks a classic story like the Death of Gwen Stacy was a mistake because they offed Osborn has no sense of a classic. Osborn's revival has produced NOTHING but cliched plots and making him a spoof of himself. His death was classic, created a horrible legacy of subsequent Goblins (and Hobgoblins) and cemented that loss of innocence. Nothing good has come of his revival, not even the death of Scarlet Spider. Nothing.
It was good to see evidence of Bendis NOT getting his way at Marvel, although it was back before he was new, and before his current role as Rasputin to Joe Q's czar.
Joe also reveals his very personal reasons for the "smoking" ban and notes that drinking also hasn't played as large a role in Marvel these days either. I can understand where he is coming from, although whether or not his ban is really accomplishing anything worthwhile is another. But he's a New Yorker, and in New York, we're being run by "Nanny" Mayor Bloomberg who wants to ban smoking, trans-fats, running with scissors, and not eating vegatables before dessert. Sure, the last two are jokes...for now. Heart's in the right place, made for good reading to read something he is passionate about where he doesn't come off as a *****ebag. Just I am not sure what the net result is. I've never heard of anyone starting smoking because of comics.
Also nice to know there are internal things at Marvel that try to coordinate continuity. Now we know exactly what seems to fail. Honestly, why can't they just coordinate this stuff better and know what everyone is doing? Normal businesses keep track of projects, and Marvel is a business, we are told, right? True, usually we are told that to justify some ass-backwards policy, and other times Marvel makes classic business blunders, but let's take them at their word. Anyway, least it is nice to know some attempt is being made to not repeat past problems.
Got to love how his reply to why some mini's/comics are late and others are not is, "stuff happens". Way to be proactive.
As for the OMEGA FLIGHT thing, honestly it sounds cool if Tom B. was literally giving fans tips on what specifically to do to help OF become an ongoing. If they can't listen to honest, blunt advice, they deserve being called "FRET'ers". I understand why it and others have become mini's in today's hostile market, so the fans are going to have to support this book if they want it to last beyond 5. Lord knows IMMORTAL IRON FIST seems to be underperforming despite Marvel.
The New Fan 4 is still stupid.
I doubt many will miss JMS on ASM. That guy was so burnt out without CW.
Nice to know WWH will be more contained than HOM was, because I plan to ignore it entirely. Just not interested. I am evented out.
And yeah, the fact that Marvel & DC are doing heavy War themes while the War is on in Iraq is a given. Comics, being liberal, have reacted with negative stories towards every war that has ever been fought after WWII. Comics were always reacting to the warfront anyway; WWII launched the industry.
Past FRIDAYS were more eventful, but I still read.
