Q: Themanofbat 03-24-2007 05:15 PM
Inasmuch as I've enjoyed JMS' run on Amazing Spider-Man, I've really got to wonder who edits his books, because a few doozies really got by the last issue (ASM #539).
First of all, why does Peter refer to Aunt May's maiden name as Fitzgerald when it's been pretty much established as being Reilly?
Secondly, how does Marvel explain the webbing that holds up his black costume at the end of the issue? His old chemically made webbing dissolved within an hour or two, and though we've yet to hear how long his new organic webbing lasts, it can't be forever. Because if it does, then Peter kills the cop in ASM #539 by suffocating him with his webbing (on account that it would have covered his face for faaaaaaaaaaaar too long)?
JQ: Hey, Themanofbat, thanks for the question. As to the first part, Axel, who edits the book, wanted to explain.
Axel Alonso: That was an error. Just slipped through the cracks. JMS emailed us to fact-check Aunt May's maiden name, and in a glitch, we gave him the wrong name. It was one of those "D'oh!" moments that just got past everyone here. We've fixed it for the second print and the trade.
JQ: There you go, Themanofbat, you get yourself a NoPrize! Expect that not to be in the mail.
As for the second half, JMS himself has you answer.
JMS: Going in reverse order...whether or not the webbing lasted over an hour or not is not relevant to the cop, who would have suffocated within minutes if it had covered his nose and mouth, but it did not. The only purpose was to immobilize him. Second, it's been established that Peter had to modify his original web fluid so that it dissolved within an hour to insure that nobody got trapped there for an undetermined amount of time and potentially died. Since we did not see the scene in which he puts the costume up there, I would submit to you that he used the unmodified, longer lasting webbing. Since each new batch has to be changed in order to make it last an hour, having the basic materials to put it there would not have been difficult.

No, really, here's a new question (which I probably could have put in my last post had I thought of it sooner)... How do you, as the Head Quesadilla of Marvel, explain how dozens of villains were killed in the new Punisher War Journal #4, yet most all are back to life as if the issue never happened? And, more importantly, why is it the writer of said heavily screwed-up issue is rumored to be given the task of taking over the writing chores on Amazing Spider-Man after the curse of JMS is exorcised from it?
JQ: You know, ApacheDick, I would love to answer your question. But, when someone asks stuff in a rude fashion as you have by insulting creators, you couldn't possibly expect me to answer it right? Guess what, you're absolutely right, I'm not answering your question.
Now that should be read with a snarky tone
Wow! And I thought fans could cook up some lame stuff to explain what some characters did, Marvel staff has them beat!
And in regards to ApacheDick...Newsarama selects which questions to give Joe Q. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, I wouldn't doubt that they let this question go through to maybe set an example as to what people SHOULDN'T do. It would be interesting to see if a trend develops where Joe starts pwning someone each week.
I'm sorry, I completely forgot that this isn't a message board.
So... you mind telling me what the hell this place is then, and how we're supposed to act? Perhaps you can use your sway with board as an "employee" of Newsarama to get an update made to the Terms of Service. That way we all live under the same level of taste that you, Khuxford, will approve.
I don't recall throwing blanket insults into my question to Joe. I stated opinions, and he chose to make it known he doesn't agree with them, by taking the "high road" and not answering. Except he didn't actually, and chose to say in so many words, "You a meanie head! I no going play you!" Which many people then decided, "Hey, that guy was mean to Joe! Him P0WWWWNNNNN3DZZZZ!"
Except I wasn't mean to him. I stated my opinion. Oops! I forgot to give the legally binding "IMO" at first. There was no easy way for me to say, "Why are you giving the guy who wrote such a continuity-discarting story the reigns in such an important, flagship title, which has already had its share of problems with its departing one?" Mainly because, that's what I had to say at the time. You wanna bend over backwards around him like he's the president of the world, go ahead. I'll call them like I see them. I didn't say "Matt Faction SUCK0RZ cuz that one story! Him no write goodest! JMS is akin to the runoff of a donkey tail!" I called the PWZ issue a screw-up (I could have very well brought up the fact it's either a ripoff or a poorly defined parody of the much-greater "Bar with No Name" story by Gruenwald, but THAT would have been beside the point), and I called my view of JMS' run on AMZ a curse. The fact he's having to address problems with AMZ so often (Sins Past, Civil War, and even in this very column) is all the justification I need. I didn't get personal with my attacks, I limited them to the stories.
But I expect this from Joe. If anybody recalls his time of editing the Marvel Knights books, his responses to negative letters, or even constructively critical ones, was often snarky. He's consistant, and gives as good as he gets (usually).
Now, the issue of why Newsarama's guys felt that one question was worth asking, when it was so "rude", while many other questions I've asked haven't made it through... Either someone saw a chance for mirth at my expense, or someone actually saw nothing wrong with any of it! Tell me that's not the real punchline of this whole regard. Or don't. I don't give a flying crap.... Or do I?
- To be fair, ApacheDick was being rather insulting and should have known better for posting at Newsarama. That said, I could agree with Joe Q's sentiment a little easier had he not called us MB fans "the interFRET" and made baiting us a professional and economical tactic. He almost never takes any criticism seriously. Although, on the other foot, the more fans who cannot construct it with some manners who get exposure, the more of us get stereotyped. Hence, it is always good to set a good example. Themanofbat did fine.
