New Line Cinema is planning a sequel to last year's family fantasy hit "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D" says The Hollywood Reporter.
Made for $60 million and making four times that at the international box-office last year, many wondered if the jump to 2D video would hinder sales numbers - turns out it didn't.
The sequel's story line comes from Richard Outten's "Mysterious Travels" spec script which posits that the classic adventure stories of "Gulliver's Travels," "Treasure Island" and Jules Verne's own "Mysterious Island" all occurred on the same island.
That script is now being retooled to fit Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson's characters from the first film and the pair are expected to return.
Producers Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Charlotte Huggins will return along with director Eric Brevig who'll be more involved in the script. Unlike the last film, New Line will fully finance this one.
