In the age of political correctness you can't do that. But early in the 20th century when my (and many other families) passed through Ellis Island they were encouraged and even told to change their ethnic names.

You think when you call customer service you're really talking to "John" or "Apple". Trust me, those agents are instructed to choose American names to better appeal to customers.

Is it sort of a dick thing to do? Yes. Is it a big deal? No. If you don't like going by Mark instead of Marcos then go work someplace else.

I didn't have to change my name in Spanish class. My teacher wasn't aware of any Spanish equivalent for "Kevin." Thanks for the unique first name, Ireland.

Anyway, I think it's a little messed up to ask his employees to anglicize their first names. The article says he does it for names that are difficult to pronounce or understand, but who the hell has trouble with "Marcos" and "Martín"? It's not like we're dealing with Panchito Romero Miguel Junipero Francisco Quintero Gonzales (aka Panchito from Three Caballeros). Marcos is literally one letter away from Marcus.

You had to use the Spanish version of your name? Only the uncool kids did that. Me, I was "Rafael". And there was a Spanish version of my name, I just didn't want it*.

Yea my spanish teach called me Miguel I hated it. In French we got to choose our own. Lets just say I was pretty happy I didnt hafta go by Michele for a semester. I went by Dominique which in retrospect doesnt sound any less feminine than Michele. Meh you live and you learn

My Spanish teacher gave everyone animal names. I thought that was going to be cool, thinking I would get called Oso or Rinocerante. He stuck me with Hipocampo (seahorse). It was still a cool class though.
