New Regency has plans to adapt Stephen Hunter's "The 47th Samurai" into a feature film, to be titled The Sword. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, saying that the studio has brought aboard Robert Kamen (The Fifth Element, Taken) to draft the screenplay. Released in 2008, the novel is part of Hunter's "Bob Lee Swagger" series and is officially described as follows:

One afternoon Bob Lee Swagger gets a surprising visitor: a retired Japanese Colonel named Philip Yaho has researched the battles on Iwo Jima and believes Swagger’s father killed his on Mount Suribachi. He is also searching for the miitary sword his father used in the battle. Swagger manages to track it down and personally delivers it to Yano in Tokyo. When they examine it, it turns out to be not an old standard issue military weapon, but an ancient samurai sword, a national treasure. A few days later, the Yano family is murdered, their house burned to the ground, and the sword stolen. Compelled to solve the crime and recover the blade, Swagger enters not only Tokyo’s criminal underbelly, but also the violent, obsessive world of the Samurai.

"The 47th Samurai" is preceded by three Swagger adventures, "Point of Impact," "Black Light" and "Time to Hunt." "Impact" was adapted into the 2007 film Shooter, directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura will produce The Sword.

I really liked Shooter and I love the sound of this, the plot is intriguing.

I think this sounds really good. I also really liked Shooter too. I thought Wahlberg was good in the movie. Could this continue from Shooter since it's about the same character or would it be it's own stand alone film adaption of the 47th Samurai book with no connection to Shooter? Either way it sounds really good. Can't wait to hear more about this.

I've also never read the books, but they sound good.

I don't think they'd make it an actual sequel to Shooter since I think most people have forgotten about that movie (even though it was a solid flick). I wouldn't be shocked if Mark Wahlberg got the part though lol.

I wouldn't mind seeing Wahlberg back in the role but it sounds as if they are going for a stand alone movie that just has the same lead character.

They do, my Dad has the one that Shooter was adapted from and I think I'm gonna pick up the 47th Samurai.

the characters name is bobby lee swagger? sounds like something out of jersey shore. I wasn't a big fan of shooter, but at least this has an interesting concept, I might check it out.
