New Superman Game?

You don't need random crimes, distracting a god, just to break up the monotony. If you do the game right, there isn't going to be much of a monotony in the first place. Arkham Asylum and Arkham City put Batman in a position where he doesn't have to deal with random crime. Same should be done with Superman. Create a scenario where he doesn't need to hang around Metropolis and keep the streets clean of small fry.

Then with your design, we have Superman Returns again.

You make two assumptions.. the first being that all gamers are like you.. they just want a linear story and stick to it to blaze through the game in a few hours. Quite a few actually like to kick back and just travel the world, seeing the sights. I certainly do, and don't want to travel a world where there is nothing to do or have surprises happen if I'm not sticking to the main story. I do not enjoy races or marker challenges, so scratch those.

The 2nd problem is you assume random crimes would be petty or above a "god." Only if the writer/designer is deficient in creativity.

Last I checked.. Arkham City has random crimes/incidents that Batman picks up over the radio.

agreed...we had a converstion about this in another thread

if I can't fly to Africa and fry an elephant with my heat vision, that is not a Superman game

No, frying an elephant would NOT make it a Superman game. Thats not something he would do.

Dirtbag Superman from Superman III would....and that's how I play

But you aren't playing dirt bag Superman(unless they are going that route) You dont get to decide how you play, thats dictated by the character, and Superman wouldn't fry an elephant.

That's you assuming I want a free roam Metropolis. There are more than enough games where you play an uber-powerful character and don't have sandbox city to play in. Yet they are still hood games.

Last I checked.. Arkham City has random crimes/incidents that Batman picks up over the radio.

Incidents that often require him to look for clues, find the culprit and possibly rescue a person from a deathtrap. And getting radio transmission to bust up some goons in some location, don't seem to be all that much different from busting up goons that are in the way of story progression. At least all those encounters would still be fun, because fighting as Batman against multiple goons is always exciting. But if you were Superman in that position, you'd get bored out of your mind, since they wouldn't be able to do anything against you.

No, I'm assuming you understand free-roam is a requirement and know that attempting to suggest otherwise will ensure no one takes you seriously. Yes, there has been more than enough games without a sandbox... mostly due to development limitations.

I think your comprehension of free roam/sandbox is limited only to what badly designed games you have experienced. "Random crimes" should be understood to mean any incident that occurs without your triggering it due to navigating to a specific point. You should also understand it is completely up to you whether you decide to deal with it at all, so if it's a bunch of goons robbing someone.. you are certainly free to decide you are too god-like to deal with gnats. It could also be a school bus about to plunge into the river off a bridge. It could be a subway train is out of control and speeding too fast. It could even be any number of his enemies. There is no rule that interesting events only happen in the main story.

I would like to see a Superman game that has as much attention to detail and is as true to the character as Arkham Asylum/City are to Batman.
