New Telemarketing Robots Refuse to Admit They Aren't Human

Tell that to Robin Williams :o

:hehe:

lol
I love that movie btw. Every time I watch it, I shade a tear.

Once machines get smart enough they can upgrade themselves.

Relatively soon after the eventual artificial intelligence upgrade could easily mimic any function of the human brain including creativity, emotion, belief or even consciousness.

If they reach that level what would separate them from us? Other than being able to explore those functions in vastly more advanced ways?

Yeah no doubt, they will become autonomous and mimic very close the human brain and body. But still, they will remain lifeless machines. I guess it has got to do with the soul. If you believe humans are not just an empty shell of flesh and blood, then you cannot accept that Robots will ever be like us.

In the end it is up to us where this A.I. thing goes. Either we keep creating more human-like robots for warfare tactics or sex service purposes and taking into account the kind of society we live in, I am afraid that's what's gonna happen, or we build them in a way that resembles more automated machines that work 24/7 to clean oceans and waste, produce food and construct our cities.

The possibilities are endless once machines can upgrade themselves.

It could end up blowing our minds, figuratively and literally.

The robot thing explains a really bad telemarketing call I got a few weeks ago. It was for a dental plan. The woman sounded so bright and cheerful, but when I told her I have my own plan and said goodbye, she just barreled right ahead with her script. "You have a dental plan? Well, that's exactly why you really need to hear about our exciting offer!" After about 30 seconds more of her spiel I just said, "I'm not interested. Goodbye!" and hung up while she was still talking. Then I felt rude but the wench just would not take a hint and shut up.

Now I'm pretty sure that it was a robot call because it isn't normal for a telemarketer to just ignore responses and keep going like that.

Actually that is rule #1 for good telemarketers, it's called "acknowledge and ignore" basically the first answer is always going to be a no or a blow off. This is taught to any telemarketer worth their salt (even the robots) and I promise you if you don't hang up on me I WILL close you 90% of the time.

I've always assumed that they were real people but were forced to follow a script and not deviate from it.

Incidentally, does a human failing the Turing test make him a robot ?

Yes we do have to follow a script, when your on the line with a telemarketer it is all recorded and you are entering into a verbal contract that is legally binding. We have rebuttals that we use or if your good like me you know the ins and outs of the program so well it just sounds like I'm having a normal conversation with you while I'm guiding you into agreeing to the sale.

...I never realized telemarketers were human.

Yes we are indeed humans just trying to make a living, sadly a large majority of us are druggies or party kids with no education and the money is a lot better than fast food. A lot of places hire people that are in programs on their way getting out of prison because it's the only job they can find and as long as you don't have any type of theft on your record you can get a telemarketers license (yes they actually make you get a license)

Most telemarketers won't waste time on a prospect once they've gotten a definite "no." Time is money and time wasted on someone who rejects the pitch isn't going to earn them anything. They just say goodbye and move on to the next cold-call victim. Sometimes they simply hang up without a goodbye because they don't want to waste any more time.

You are actually wrong, good telemarketers like myself wont take no for an answer and the longer you are on the phone with me the more likely you are to get closed by me. While yes time is money and some people cherry pick their deals for just lay downs good leads are hard to come buy so if you get on the phone with me and don't hang up I will close you. That's how I make $500+ a week after taxes not even working 40 hours.

Fair point, it make sense.
As I don't have much experience in telemarketing I also thought that they tried to sell the product/service to the last end and didn't took "no" as an answer.

That is absolutely correct, everyone says no at first, it's a given. It's almost everyone default response because people always assume phone stuff is a scam.

Just to give you an idea of what I do, I sign people up for 5 programs that come out on a trial and if they don't cancel it they will be billed $99.98 for all five. They get gifts for reviewing the programs and but most of the time the gifts aren't what they thought they were getting. Also it can be a pain to cancel them once they sign up. My company has thousands of 1-800 and 1-888 numbers that are one digit off from big companies numbers like walmart, the EBT hotline, and local utilities etc etc.

So if you ever dial a toll free number and are told you won a $100 Walmart card hang up the phone because you may get me and if you get me I will sell you, and you will probably end up having to cancel your card and it will cost you money.

I think teelie is just a narcissist who only loves the toaster for its stainless steel reflection.
My toaster has no reflection so ha!

And if you want to go the soul route then there's the question of what constitutes a soul. Can a machine be given one or attain one? If it does, then how do you reconcile that with beliefs? What about other living creatures? Whales, primates, pigs and a number of other animals have shown if not sentience then a spark of it showing self awareness.

I'm going to make the assumption that by the time we have machines that alive we'll have adjusted our belief system to accomodate them and it will be the minority who call them soulless (much like how many cultures de-humanized other humans who were different than them).

Unlike the way movies and television series so often portray, I don't see humanity as always viewing artificial intelligence as lifeless, soulless, machinery that can never become something more or never gain equal rights.

Clearly we're a long ways off from any of this being a reality so it is all just fantasy still.

I do one better; if I don't recognize the number or it comes up as suspicious, I don't answer it. I don't dial toll free numbers either, unless it's specifically to deal with a certain company over a certain matter. If it isn't them, I don't stay on the line.

If you really want to have some fun with a telemarketer:
1. Answer the phone
2. Sound really interested and ask tons of questions
3. Keep them on the phone for as long as possible
4. Come up with the craziest backstory you can think of (I mean really go out there)
5. And finally when you get bored ALWAYS say I just want to cancel everything and you can put me on the do not call list

I tell you that's the best revenge because you waste time, they think they are getting the sale and it pisses us off to no freaking end. And I mean really waste their time too like 10+ minutes if you can stand it, or more even

I've heard, read, and watched YouTube videos of people do that. Some of the payoffs are priceless when the telemarketer loses their ****.

I usually don't assume telemarketers are scamming, the majority of the time it's legit, but the majority of the time if not all the time, I don't have any desire to buy the **** they try to sell. By scamming I mean a company that is trying to sell you something but the money is actually going to one of those African gangs that you see the stories about on shows like dateline news.

Hahaha, "I will sell you". Sorry to make fun of your selling skills but if you claim to get people everytime they talk to you, you're mainly getting people that are the dumbest of the dumb. When I get a telemarketer on the phone I tell them no, if they keep pushing with their usual horse **** "but wait..." or "well did you know...". That's when I literally tell them to **** off or drop dead then hang up. Telemarketers are just as bad as people in advertising.

I love what my dad does. He loves to talk, so he'll purposefully waste their time for minutes on end then tells them he was never interested.

My advice to people is to Never buy anything from you guys. As you said, most of these dishonest **** head companies purposefully make it near impossible to quit so you sometimes might have to cancel your card. They keep going back and forth with the customer telling them to call this number to quit or cancel. Then the person at that number tells you to call another number or the number you called the first time.

The only time I was put in a situation like that was when I joined Anytime Fitness. They kept giving me the run around to the point where I snapped on those jerks. I was furious and screaming at them threatening to sue which I was going to do and I would have won due to the fact that I had proof of my copy of the 30 or 60 day cancellation notice I signed that was approved and signed by one of the managers.

In short people, the majority of these people are flat out scumbags who don't care that they are ripping off people. That's why I have no problem cussing them out on the phone and sometimes telling them to do the world a favor and run into oncoming traffic.

I close about 90% of my calls on any given day, and I can sleep at night cuz I don't lie, speed read or mislead them. I tell them everything but I can't control what the fronter tells them or what they interpret from what I say. When I first came up in the telemarketing game I was very shady and ripped off tons of people. I've grown since then and since I only do this for extra money ( I can live comfortably off of my DJing) I refuse to do anything that makes me feel like I'm being shady anymore

Glad to hear you stopped ripping off people.

When you say you tell them everything, when it comes to subscriptions do you make sure to tell them that if they go for a one month trial they have to cancel before it ends otherwise the subscription keeps going or did you let them figure that out on their own?

Of course I make sure they know to cancel, I just have to word it right so my deal doesn't get kicked out. I also give them the numbers to call and let them write them down too if they want

Lawl, I work in a call center for satalite TV and I am typing this post as we speak because there are barely any calls any day.

I get paid to browse the hype essentially all day. So the second this vile bastard replaces my victory position i'll loose my mind, and probably my job too.
