The next 'Spider-Man' movies may go in a completely different direction

After months in the spotlight of the Sony email hacking scandal, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal announced she will step down from her position at the studio in May to launch her own production company.
With her gone, we can expect that many of Sony’s upcoming blockbusters will be reexamined - especially the Amazing Spider-Man movies, which have hit a road bump last year with the tepid response The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received and the controversy surrounding their planned spinoffs. In fact, it looks like it's possible that the Spider-Man movies may be going on a completely new path thanks to this corporate shake-up.

Now that Pascal has vacated her position, Variety is reporting that there is a possibility that Sony may forgo plans to expand Spider-Man’s cinematic universe. Although the franchise remains a "cash cow" for the studio, they are evidently reexamining whether they want to move forward with films like Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3, something that Amy Pascal was keen on pushing forward.

Instead, the trade reports suggests that the "new regime" might consider negotiating with Marvel Studios again over Spidey’s film rights. Hearing this, it's hard not to think of the hacked emails from last December that revealed discussions between Sony and Marvel regarding a scenario where Marvel would produce a trilogy of Spider-Man films (sadly, nothing ever came of those talks).

Originally, a Sinister Six movie and a Venom movie were in the works at Sony. As things currently stand, Sinister Six is being planned for release in late 2016, meaning production would have to begin during the latter half of 2015 to stay on schedule. If Sony is going to keep that date, they’re going to need to make a decision on how to proceed with Spidey’s future in the coming months. There was a "Spider-summit" reportedly scheduled for last month where the executives would have discussed the future of the franchise, but no information from that meeting has been disclosed to the public.

As stated many times before, Sony has more to lose from a deal with Marvel than the House of Ideas does. Marvel has been having enormous success with their library of characters, whether it’s well-known superheroes like Iron Man or D-list adventurers like the Guardians of the Galaxy. The only superhero Sony has is Spider-Man, and right now he’s not doing so well on the big screen. While it may not be optimal for them, striking a deal with Marvel may be the only way for the studio to guarantee continued success for the Web Slinger while still earning a portion of profits. If that happens, it’s unlikely that we’d see the Wall-Crawler appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War (an adaptation of the original 2006 Civil War story that he played a huge part in), but if he joins the MCU, it's not impossible that he could appear in one of the Avengers: Infinity War movies.

Despite the franchise being currently in limbo, Sinister Six is set to be released on Nov. 11, 2016, with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 scheduled for sometime in 2018.

Thanks for posting this. It still gives me some hope.

I seriously doubt if The Sinister Six will go forward... it's might be on the table to be re-examined whether they want to go thru with it, but at least Amy Pascal, the executive who really wanted it to go forward, is OUT, baby... the major consensus seems to be against it, and Sony DOES hear what's being said about it... whether they go thru with it or not, is another thing...

LOL I see what you did there.

 :woo:

but I'm sure we can count on Sony to do the wrong bone-headed move... they excel at it so wonderfully... but I still remain hopeful that they'll do the right decision and scrap plans for the Six movie...

In the last week Sony sold off their online gaming division and properties. Last year they sold off whatever bit of Square Enix they still owned unless SOMETHING with them is a success, it's only a matter of time before they gotta sell of the Webhead.

Well they want to shift the focus of SPE from film to television so it could happen. They do a much better job with the smaller independent movies anyway than they do with their Hollywood blockbusters so maybe that's a good move on their part.

I am very excited to hear about possible further adventures of Soider-Man!!!

Well I just hope the future of Spider-Man is at Marvel/Disney and not just at Sony.

What's sad is that Sony is just making the same mistakes over and over again. I just hope that Amy Pascal's departure leads to something good for us Spider-Man fans.

sony can keep Soldier-Man, I just want Spider-Man back with marvel.

I would be okay with Sony just keeping the distribution rights and allowing Marvel to produce all future Spider-Man films. Sony could also release the DVD's or Blu-Rays. Otherwise they shouldn't have any creative control.

Not interested in any of this 'shared creative control' business. Best possible option is for Marvel to be in the driver's seat and pay Sony for essentially doing nothing, or distributing at best.

Even then they'd want a deal that wouldn't hinder boxed sets or whatever later on, like Fox still controlling Star wars releases. Ugh.

That's basically how I see it too; Sony should be happy with doing distribution, letting everything else with Marvel.

'Spider-Man' Swings to Marvel Studios in Major Sony Partnership

Spider-Man is getting a mighty Marvel makeover.

Sony Pictures, which has been the steward of the franchise since 1999, is partnering up with Disney-owned Marvel Studios to bring a new version of the Spider-Man character to life.

As part of the revamp, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film. The companies are not revealing details but that movie is likely to be Captain America: Civil War; the character was a major player in the comics storyline. Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the character.

Once the character is re-launched, Sony will then release a new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will join Amy Pascal as a producer on the new movie. The duo will “collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger,” according to the companies.

There is also talk of looking ways to integrate characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the Marvel movies are known, into future Spider-Man films.

The move is a major team-up for two rival studios. Spider-Man has been Sony's most lucrative franchise, but the most recent installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, disappointed. Disney's Marvel has had unprecedented success with its hero films.

Sony, however, will retain the final creative control and continue to finance, distribute, own the new movies.

Said Feige: “Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

“This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans,” said SPE’s chairman and CEO Michael Lynton.

The move has been speculated for some time. Among the fanboy crowd, talk of a partnership between the companies arose last summer after the poor reception of Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Although the movie made $708 million worldwide, it was the lowest of all the franchise entries. More critically, the movie was widely panned by fans. Talks were confirmed when emails leaked during Sony’s hacking crisis although they seemingly broke down in the fall.

MARVEL STUDIOS AND SONY TO SHARE SPIDER-MAN IN NEW COLLABORATIVE DEAL

Spidey rules

now all we need is for Garfield and Webb to be dumped from the project and there just might be hope for this thing yet... :awesome: when all these things happen, I'll be dancing my ass off...

Well I don't think there is any chance of Webb and Garfield returning.
