Simple premiere? From what I remember, Hugh went to a gajillion countries for that movie, but the whole cast did only appear at one place (I think LA).

Yeah that's what I mean, with the whole cast. And Stan Lee should be there too, I think.

Spoiler is a scene description.

Lights, camera, action with Jackman in town
BY MICHAEL COX

HOLLYWOOD descended on Picton on Friday as it was transformed into a movie set for the filming of The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman.

Hundreds of people lined the street in the hope of seeing Jackman on the "snow" covered set, made to resemble a town in northern Canada.
The first scene filmed featured Jackman walking through the town's hardware store doors as a group of hunters loaded their pick-up truck with bags and rifles, drinking beer, revving each other up. The scene was shot half a dozen times and the hype grew as people began climbing on rooftops to catch a glimpse of the Aussie actor.

But it was 36 pupils from St Anthony's Primary School who got the first "exclusive" with Jackman. The school's roll was cut up into 350 pieces and thrown into a hat before the winning kids were escorted on to the movie set to meet him.

One year 5 boy asked: "Hugh, why are you so hairy?" Jackman told the boy it was because he was a hermit in the film and didn't want to be recognised.

Year 6 pupil Jade Hutchinson, an aspiring actress, stepped onto her first Hollywood set and came away with Jackman's autograph and a thumb print to prove it.

"He's a lovely guy," Jade said, and told the Advertiser she gave the autograph to her brother on his birthday on Saturday because he loved Jackman.

For anyone interested in this stuff, here's an explanation why the filming is in Australia. You have to admit Hugh is a great ambassador for his home country.

Australian film industry hopes for 'Wolverine' boost
By Madeleine Coorey (AFP)

SYDNEY — Australia was once a regular destination for top Hollywood producers making big-budget blockbusters until it was priced out by its soaring currency -- but a clawed mutant could herald a revival.

X-Men comics spin-off "The Wolverine" is being shot in Sydney, the home town of star Hugh Jackman, courtesy of a Aus$12.8 million (US$13.4 million) government subsidy.

Some four years since the release of the last major blockbuster filmed Down Under, Baz Luhrmann's romantic outback epic "Australia", the local film industry sees the funding as a lifeline and hopes it will trigger a resurgence.

The sector's woes are an example of Australia's two-speed economy, where resources firms are booming but other companies struggle with the consequences of their success, particularly the rise of the Australian dollar.

Back when the Aussie currency languished well below parity with the greenback, a string of big movies were filmed in Sydney including "The Matrix" (1999), Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible II" (2000) and "Moulin Rouge!" (2001).

"As you can imagine, when our dollar was 52, 65, 72 cents, 83 cents (against the US dollar) ... we were seen as a very attractive destination," said Debra Richards, chief executive of marketing body Ausfilm.

With more competition from other countries, which have increased financial incentives for filmmakers, big productions in Australia have dwindled.

Richards argues the government needs to increase its appeal by lifting its subsidy for using Australia as a location from the current 16.5 percent of qualifying expenditure to 30 percent to level the playing field.

"We're not being looked at because it just is not viable financially. Even though people want to work with us, when you look at it and you compare it to other territories, then it's not as attractive," Richards said.

"So kicking the location offset up to 30 percent allows us to still be compared -- at the moment at 16.5 we're not."

She is hopeful the federal government's cultural policy to be released later this year will alter the rules.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it was Jackman himself who convinced her to provide the money to bring "The Wolverine" production to Australia because it would create more than 2,000 jobs and keep specialist skills in the country.

She announced the funding last month on the movie set at Sydney's Fox Studios, standing alongside Jackman who is reprising his best-known performance in the mutant title role.

"He explained to me that without government assistance it would be very hard to see this venture take place in Australia," Gillard said. "I wanted these Australian jobs, I wanted the injection into our economy."

Australia has clocked robust economic growth in recent years despite the global slowdown, but Gillard added that while the mining and resources sectors were booming, strong creative industries helped build a diversified economy.

"I wanted the skills that it would mean for the future," she said.

"We haven't seen a blockbuster in Australia since 'Australia' with Hugh and Nicole (Kidman) and we are at risk of the skill sets being dispersed around the world and importantly not bringing the next generation through."

"The Wolverine" is expected to bring more than Aus$80 million into the country but for his part Jackman, 43, said he was simply happy to be home.

"To be shooting a movie of this magnitude here at home is one of the great privileges I have had in my career," he said.

Gillard said the grant was the equivalent of what the film would have received if the tax rebate was lifted to 30 percent, and indicated that she saw the benefits of providing incentives for foreign films.

"We decided it was a good investment," she said.

I really hope there aren't any more stupid scenes of any one looking up into the sky and yelling as the camera pans overhead.

Apparently there's something in "Total Film" magazine:

Hugh Jackman confirms The Wolverine is standalone film not a sequel and won't be 'overloaded' with mutants

By David Bentley on August 13, 2012 1:41 PM |

FILMING is now under way in Australia on The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman's second solo adventure as the metal-laced antihero.

It's based largely on a comic book series in which the character travels to Japan and finds his claws clashing with samurai swords after he begins a forbidden romance.

As has been hinted several times during the long journey towards production getting under way, it will not directly connect with 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Jackman told Total Film magazine: "We've deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture.

"With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it's going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic."

And in what must be seen as an acknowledgement of the unnecessary characters added to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Jackman adds: "The approach to character means we won't be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it'll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film."

Of course, film fans know only too well that a strong story is essential for any movie rather than treating this simply as a cash-generating franchise in which fans, audiences and critics will accept any and all offerings regardless of quality. And Jackman has at last taken that on board.

On the approach taken to The Wolverine, he says: "I talked to Jeffrey Katzenberg (Dreamworks Animation CEO and producer of Jackman's upcoming Rise of the Guardians) about Wolverine and that franchise.

"He was relating to his experiences on Shrek and said it's really got to do with the strength of the idea - the concept of why that film exists must be strong, you can't assume that the brand will bring people along.

"So we went to Christopher McQuarrie, who was involved in X-Men and The Usual Suspects. He's a brilliant writer and he came up with a concept that was just phenomenal. I rang Jeffrey and he went 'Great, now you have a good idea, just go for it.'"

Those following news on The Wolverine will recall various setbacks including Darren Aronofsky leaving as director and the effect of Japan's earthquake and tsunami on the shooting schedule.

Jackman admits it hasn't been easy getting cameras to start rolling on The Wolverine.

He said: "I'm just really glad it's happening. For a while it's felt like a rocky ride. I think it's the best idea we've had, the strongest script we've had and that now we really have an opportunity to make something really great.

"I've been waiting for it so long now", he added, and then joked: "I think half the material in my one-man show is about the wait for The Wolverine!"

The Wolverine is released on July 26, 2013.

I figured they were going to distance themselves from the last one. But most Wolverine stories in the books do that anyway due to the memory issues.

Be cool if they could stick Psylocke in this one. :yay:
Dear God no. Isn't the over stuffing of unnecessary mutants part of the reason TLS and XMO are so terribly received? And for the first time we have an X-Men film that isn't doing that, and you already want them to!

Agreed. Shed be awesome if they had a spot for her. No reason to throw her in if there isnt a good role but since she has history in Japan with Logan and The hand shed be a good fit, more so then other X Men.

Silver Samurai is still going to be a mutant I assume.

I guess a rumor while back from early script report was that hes not a mutant and has electro armor.Im sure its been through rewrites so who knows. Hopefully he is a mutant, I see no need in changing that.

I think he, Logan, and Viper will be the only mutants.

I agree with what def28 said:

I know I probably said it the wrong way (stick her in it). But if they found a good fitting role for her, I would love it.

Definitely do not want her to be sticked or forced in this movie like those mutants in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Genuinly starting to get excited for this now, I didnt mind the last Wolverine movie, but they de-mystified the character too much by telling everything. They would have been better leaving some stuff out.

But this is shaping up to be great, we have Wolvie with no memory, which is when he is best, a decent cast and a good director. And then a year later we get FC2, great stuff.

Hugh Jackman basiclly confirmed my view of film.It should not be viewed as sequel. But, a self contained story set before X-Men/X2 or first trilogy(depending on which you prefer)

I am lookig forward to this.My most anticapted 2013 comic book film.

Recent comments from Bryan Singer seem to be indicating that he and the other PTBs currently in charge of the X franchise want to finally realize the goal of stitching together a single concise continuity for the X films using FC2 (DoFP) as a vehicle, and I'm interested in seeing how, if at all, The Wolverine fits into that goal. It does appear as if the film is following First Class' lead in wiping Origins: Wolverine from continuity, which is, I think, a good decision, but I'd be interested in hearing someone involved with the film - or with the production of FC and DoFP - comment specifically on if The Wolverine is meant to fit within the bounds established by FC as it concerns Logan's cameo in that film.

Hm, that would be strange. I just assumed they wold continue using the X-Men Movies facebook page like they have for the last few films.

Psylocke is British and has very little history in Japan, compared to Logan.

She has plenty of history with Japan and Japanese characters. Shes been in an asiain body for quiet some time since all the Kwannon stuff. Psylocke was also essentialy trained by the hand, the hand destoryed her british body, she killed Matsu'o Tsurayaba to spare him from Wolverine endlessy torturing him after what he did to Mariko.

Psylocke is a freaking ninja when it comes down to it. With her connections to The Hand, having her in a film that takes place in Japan would be a great choice for introducing her,its an easier way to explain her complicated backstory. Most of her backstory connections come from there and I doubt we will ever see The Hand in another X film. I also highly doubt her start from the Captain Britain family side of things will ever be shown on the screen. Dont think Fox owns the Braddock family besides Betsy. They would need to simplify her regardless of what X Men film she does show up in.
