Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives

Valhalla Rising was pretty damn boring.
I liked it. I also love seeing people being dumbfounded at its stubborn desire to not provide us anything via verbal exposition.

Which brings me to his version of a Superhero film, which I hesitate to get excited about. Because he most assuredly will be using a neutered version of his style and I don't want that. Refn is one of the most promising blooming filmmakers because of his style; it also doesn't lend itself well to Hollywood action films.

There's times where I loved his non dialogue scenes, where it's just build up. That worked so well in Drive. Valhalla I was just falling asleep and just wasn't interested in the story.

I like Refn, but I don't want to see him do Batman. His style would kind of have to be watered down. There's apart of me who would like to see another side of Refn, but if he's stuck on that, I wouldn't want to take that away from him.

His prolonged uses of silence wouldn't really gel in a Batman film for me. But only if it was the right circumstance. Now possibly he could direct one hell of a fight scene with Batman taking on thugs and being in shadow, but I don't want to see a whole film where characters rarely talk and stare.

Mixed feelings on this director and his last film but he would make one hellllll of a Highlander movie.

mix elements of drive with his viking movie and his nack for blood and silence.

I really want to know one solid reason for why people complain about Drive. It looks and sounds beautiful. It has a strong narrative and characters who don't need a boat load of exposition for you to follow their motivates. Great performances from all involved. It is simply brilliant.

I love Drive. It's become one of my favorite movies ever that I was glad I saw in a theater because it was one of the most beautiful looking movies I've seen also.

With that said I can easily understand why people don't like it. People were sold on it being an action movie, and they felt cheated when watching it. Also, it can be frustratingly slow at times.

People compare Refn to Tarantino, but I don't think that's a fair comparison. I think a better comparison is to Tarantino's main inspiration, Sergio Leone, who also had done the same thing with his movies. I think both Tarantino and Refn have the same inspirations in Leone, but I don't think Refn takes much influence from Tarantino directly.

Same here. I love it. Probably seen it 20 times since its release. I am not to big on rankings these days, but if you asked me, it would probably be in my ten favorite films.

Its like a Pavlovian response. People say they are tired of cliches but the cliche ridden stuff still makes money. People don't invest any time in recognizing 1) something being original or 2) real emotions and acting and restraint as opposed to overacting and narration and characters explaining their every thought and feeling in some big speech. They just think they're bored.

There is action. Arguably some of the best seen on film in a while. It was sold like a gangster flick and that is exactly what it is. Granted a gangster film by way of a fairy tale, but it is still very much that.

This is similar to the argument against Jack Reacher, which again is much better then all the crappy action fluff people seemed to expect.

As to being slow, when? I can't think of one scene, one moment. Just because actors aren't talking doesn't mean nothing is going on.

This feels frustratingly true. The emotions the actorss evoke is ridiculously good. The characters are some of my favorites.

Has this something to do with the gritty spaghetti western film called God Forgives... I Don't (1967), starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer (before they infused comedy in their shared work)?

What, you didn't think it was gonna be another Fast and Furious too? :funny:

Don't believe so

Refn is like Tarantino meets Malick or something

And a little bit of Michael Mann his visuals are cool.

It just didn't engage me. I did not feel for any of the characters and the whole style of the movie is not my cup of tea. And don't even get me started on the music.

A lot of people who hate drive find it to be unoriginal and in fact to be hollowly derivative of many other films.

I love the vibe and cinematography of that trailer. I will definitely be seeing this.

Refn do love his red. :) Visuals looks great. Very stylish, just like Drive.

Drive totally knocked me out with how awesome it was. So this is definitely one of my most anticipated of this year.

As much as I'm all about Gosling in this movie, I'm actually more looking forward in seeing Kristin Scott Thomas here. She looks fabulous.

Oh god I love Drive, and I love this trailer. Cant wait!

Loved Drive, and obviously i'm hoping this movie will be great... but I am a little worried about any of the characters being likeable, cause I have trouble with films like that. I need at least one person to not be a *****e :funny:

looks like there is going to be lots of prolonged silence in this one.

Looks pretty solid. Very intrigued to see this.

No, it doesn't. It's a couple of strong individual scenes (robbery, motel, etc.) and a good lead performance surrounded by inertia and lazy storytelling.
