The reason the game to movie movies fail is because they're so bad, that even the fans don't want to bother. Elektra failed, why, because it sucked. Ghost Rider has an interesting visual appeal which helped it's box office. If a studio used an interesting property like Zelda, Metroid, Bioshock or Metal Gear, and did it well it could be very successful.
Zelda is really an epic romance, going to the farthest ends of the earth to save the woman he loves (which is how it should be portrayed, Link is already in love with Zelda, no young link only teenage/young adult Link).
Metroid, intergalatic bounty hunter, since she's a girl, it'll also help with that demo.
Bioshock, 1984 type movie, plus the fall of utopian society, done in the visual style of the game will get people in just for that.
Metal Gear, everyone loves a spy movie.
However, there are two big problems with game adaptations, even these great concepts for movies; one, there's really only one main character and maybe someone that needs saving and a few people to give you tips along the way, everyone else in the movie is a villian, so studios would create new characters, robbing part of what makes these games great, the isolated feeling, that you against the world feeling.
Two, games these days are so sophistacated, they're almost like a movie already, only you're controlling the action, why would I want to watch Bioshock on the big screen, when I could play the game, it's just like the movie only I'm the star.
