The "Next Harry Potter"?

I already mentioned this several times, even when I was posting my suggestions. I wrote, repeatedly, that none of these properties have taken the world by storm the way HP has. They would all require reboots, reimaginings, comic adaptations, childrens' illustrated adaptations, toy lines, etc, etc, etc, before the movies even came out to even be a contender. They could become the "New Batman Begins" or the "New LOTR", meaning movies that rekindle interest in a dead or luke warm franchise. But they don't have what is needed to become the "Next HP". Not right now at least.

I gathered that, but you still think they have a chance, eventually, of being that level of phenomenon. I, on the other hand, do not. I think that once a franchise/property hits mainstream, in ANY form, and doesn't take off the way Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and, yes, Twilight did when they hit mainstream in their original forms, it's never going to generate "mania." Any revival will be tempered by those who have seen it before and aren't interested. I don't think these properties will ever be contenders in the same sentence with HP.

Many of them will become critically acclaimed and beloved films, some will develop a cult following, some may become trilogies. None of them will take the world by storm. That's just wishful thinking.

By the criteria given, there is no next Harry Potter.

Still, I'd love some Ender's Game and some Maximum Ride.

I was working this weekend at the Manga/Anime convention out at UBC, and I found this DVD box set at the booth I was working at. I haven't seen the actual show, but by the description of the story on the box, I'd say that if this show were to be released on North American TV (by Nickelodeon, YTV, Cartoon Network, Teletoon, or whoever), AND it's as big of a hit as AVATAR: The Last Air Bender was, a live action movie version of this show has the potential to be the next Harry Potter. However, it has to become a huge international hit first. Otherwise, it'll likely be the next The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe at best.

I just got it. A cinematic adaptation of Wicked, and other Wizard of Oz works.

That or a sophisticated remake of A Neverending Story.

Neil Gaiman's THE GRAVEYARD BOOK could potentially by the next "harry potter" as well. Sure, it's only one book, but from what i remember reading it (its been about a year) it's a pretty episodic book, so it could theoretically be split into parts, with each part fleshed out to add a larger scope.

I'd suggest Terry Pratchet's Disc World novels, but none of those characters are young enough to fit the established criteria.

Was that based on a pre-existing series of books? I thought it was just a sci-fi version of Dances With Wolves. Dunno if that qualifies it to be our "Next HP" or not.

And I thought that Harry Potter was just the 10,000th itteration of the Hero's Journery Plot...

I think someone is going to push for a new Oz series soon. Not only with Harry Potter but with the success of Alice in Wonderland. So it's probably going to be in 3D with lots of cgi characters.

I suspect that Jake and Oy will get played up quite a bit in The Dark Tower, although that's really stretching the criteria.

I kind of want to see how Vertigo's The Unwritten plays out. It wouldn't really surprise me if WB turns to that in a few years as a loosely related Harry Potter followup.

(FWIW, I'm curious where the Avatar sequels are going, but the lack of children/teens/young adults is probably disqualifying it from consideration in this thread.)

If it hasn't already happened I don't know how you can predict what will be the next Harry Potter as far as childrens books go. There hasn't been anything like HP in this lifetime and it seems unlikely that there will be anytime soon or possibly ever.

kinda stealing someone else's thunder 'cos I've seen this mentioned in another thread but, treated right (and imo, upping the scare stakes/tone a bit from the books) I can see Goosebumps becoming a big film franchise.. Perhaps not on such a high level as HP but certainly up there...

I'm not sure we have "the next HP" among us right now, but if I HAD to guess based on what is currently out there, I'd probably choose the Hunger Games. I've never read any of them, so I'm in no way a fan, but I can't seem to escape them. Online, on the metro, those books seem to pop up everywhere around me. It seems like whenever I see a discussion of any young actor or actress, the fan-casting of them in the Hunger Games inevitably comes up. The last time I encountered this scenario was a few years ago with Twilight. But I have heard they are much better young adult books than that series, and after reading a description these books, its sounds like if the movie's any good, it could have a much, much wider demographic than Twilight as well.
