The Last Jedi (NO SPOILERS) The Last Jedi EARLY TWEET REACTION thread (NO SPOILERS)

Just saw the movie. I'm still processing it in my thoughts. I....don't know how to assess this movie. A second watch will hopefully help.

I'm finding this very common with many people. I'm planning on three viewings myself. One tomorrow and then two more with other groups of friends and family once the crows die down a bit.

Can you even tell if you liked it or not, Kommander?

Where do we post our reviews?

This is the kind of reaction I imagine the Empire Strikes Back got when it first came out. Not to say the quality is like ESB, but I remember my pops told me when it first came out he didn't know what to think of it and that it was nothing at all what he expected.

That actually puts me at ease a little bit...

just came from seeing The Last Jedi in glorious IMAX 3D. it is a beautiful film, with lots of layers and twists*, and yet lots of fan service from the previous Star Wars films. this movie indeed has achieved the balance in the Force.:up:

*I avoided most spoiler things including many of the trailers /tv spots. if you spoiled yourself silly, then idk if you just ruined the movie experience for yourself :p

Looking forward to your spoiler-free impressions good sir. :yay:

Here they are: Star Wars is ****ing dead to me. I'm desperately, desperately hoping I wake up tomorrow morning and it all suddenly clicks into place for me, but I just don't think that's is going to happen. This movie is garbage from top to bottom. Every now and then, there's a great moment or two, and you think "Oh maybe now they'll pull it together"... But no. No.

I'm sitting here genuinely crushed. They ****ing ruined it all.

PLEASE let me wake up tomorrow and think "Well, my reaction's melodramatic..."

Why bother even making episode 9? Last Jedi was not a movie worth making. Awful Awful Awful! Cool special effects, good acting, terrible terrible plot. What the hell was Bob Iger smoking when he green lighted this crapfest? Thank goodness I saved the receipts for all of the Last Jedi Merchandise we had bought on sale. Its all getting returned tomorrow!

:csad:

Admittedly, part of me is kind of excited to see any type of passionate reaction, negative or positive, because I think both TFA and Rogue One are a bit on the painfully safe side...but I'm sorry you felt that way, and seeing that we generally tend to have similar tastes that's a bit troubling.

Can I at least ask this...can you see why it's getting mostly great reviews or is that baffling you?

I can't speak for Titansupes, but I genuinely can't see what it is those reviewers are seeing, and I'm someone who generally trusts the consensus on RT. The film just meanders throughout.

God, I feel old in relation to this sentence given your possible age then.... I must be near your pops age....

Damn guys. I dunno, it sounds like we've got a sharply polarizing film on our hands. Cause most of the good reviews note some of the negatives, but still seem really enthused about a lot of the creative choices and Johnson's direction.

I hope I don't walk out as disgusted as titansupes, but at this point I'm just kind of putting all expectations for what I think "should" happen aside and hoping to be taken on a satisfying ride.

And yeah, I've heard stories about the reception ESB got too, and it was anything but the universal praise it now enjoys.

Well my father was 32 when it came out so I'm sure he's older than you. I think what's relevant is that he was an adult when he experienced the original Star Wars much like the rest of us now.

We can save you the trouble - you're being melodramatic.

Or at least in a hardcore minority, given the pretty overwhelmingly positive reactions so far and the RT score.

Enjoy it or don't, but you can chill a little too.

As for the polarizing part, yeah, both Empire and Jedi were polarizing at the time too. Most of us love both of them. Time puts things in perspective. And hey, George likes the movie, that's enough to pretty much ostracize any of the fanbase carrying this "SW in name only! Waah!" train of thought. It's tiresome at a certain point.

Except this movie is good, unlike the prequels. Yes, even Revenge of the Sith. :o

Yeah, George's comment kind of put me at ease that this movie was going to cross any red lines, canon-wise at least.

I want this movie to challenge me and shake things up. I'm going into that knowing that and hoping for it. And after the super briskly-paced TFA, I'm also feeling ready for something a bit more meaty and "meandering".

I don't know, so far most of the negatives I'm hearing sound like they could easily be positives for me, but obviously I won't know for sure until I see it myself. Trying to stay optimistic, it's tough when so many people see a highly anticipated movie before you and you can feel "the conversation" starting to happen around it ahead of you. You gotta try not to let that hang over you too much and try to get back to your original state of openness and anticipation.

It's the prequel reactions all over again :)

This time it's different. The prequels at least feel like Star Wars, for all their flaws. This doesn't. This looks like it, but it's missing the heart.

Oh hell no. Say whatever you will about Phantom Menace and Clones but I will fight anyone who drags Revenge of the Sith through the mud!

I actually lean more towards being a prequel apologist, even though I happily acknowledge their flaws.

But...isn't the fact that the prequels "didn't feel like Star Wars" like at the heart of most people's arguments against them? Wasn't a huge part of the backlash the fact that they felt too stiff and were lacking the likable characters and heart of the OT? Sure, there were millions of other complaints, but to me that was the heart of it and it's the reason why TFA is the movie it is.

Are you saying you think people are going to start looking at the prequels more favorably in light of TLJ? :ebr:
