GB: Could you see actually yourself not making the third Batman film?

NOLAN: Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

I was just going to post this :...:P

That means he wont rush it. That's a good thing.

interview said:
GB: Watching "The Dark Knight," it’s very easy to imagine the Joker returning to Gotham, the way his fate remains unresolved. When you were writing the film, did you anticipate that the Joker would be back in the third film?

NOLAN: No, really and in truth, I only deal with one film at a time. I find myself sort of protesting this issue a lot. We’ve never attempted to save anything for a sequel or set up anything for a sequel.
So there wasn't going to be any joker in the next movie.

i think we all can interpret this as nolan will make 5 more movies with each one grossing over 500 mil and the actor playing the main villain will die.

Didn't Eckhart himself say that Ledger was supposed to go on to the next movie? (Obviously this was the plan before his passing.)

IM glad this his stance on making a third.

Another movie is not needed but it would be sweet as long as Nolan is there.

If I were to pick between an awesome 2 part series or a crappy ending trilogy well...there you are.

Eckhart said he thought or believed, but that could just be a matter of the studio taking it upon themselves in signing Ledger to a multi-picture deal, just in case if he were to be used again, he is already under contract. But that doesn't necessarily mean he was going to be used.

At this point Nolan can do whatever he want and I'm cool with it.

While I would like him to come back, if he's don't then It's cool because he has brought BATMAN back to where he belong with the public concerning his movies.

I agree totally with you on that

I seem to remember him being equally vague after Batman Begins. I get the impression he doesn't like to admit to anything until a project is officially under way.

If that's the case, I don't any sense of changing tht original plans. Sure Ledger died, but the Joker character is bigger than any actor to portray him. There's another actor out there who can fill the role adequately.

Right, plus he has leverage this way. If he starts mentioning how he can't wait to do another Batman film before he signs his contract then he won't have the same bargaining power with the studio.

He'll be back because there will be another awesome script.

He'll be back......

trust me. :cwink:

PS: Just because he's having an interview doesnt mean he can't lie. He is human after all and not to mention, he's not discussing homeland defense, or having sexual relations with his interns. He can lie all he wants about his film endevours so the press don't hound him to death with annoying questions that he wants to keep the answer, err, for lack of a better expression, close to the vest.

*poke poke*

Get it? Cuz like it's both a TDK quote and Nolan always wears a vest? Huh? huh? Funny? Yes? This is funny? lol

:p

I interpret what Nolan said a little more literally. I honestly think that he isn't thinking about BB3, but would definately only do the film if the story were good enough. I could almost see this playing out a bit longer than people think. Maybe Nolan does another film or TWO before a suitable story for BB3 is concluded. Potentially making the wait before the third film up to 4 or 5 years..

Just because Nolan didn't say "We're making another movie and the Joker's gonna be back" doesn't mean it didn't occur to him.

He didn't say the joker won't be back, he said he wasn't thinking about it.

It's easy to bring the joker back in the story. Less so in production.

It's hard to bring Harvey back in the story, easy in production.

I don't think Nolan's gonna bring Harvey back, but I'm not convinced he's going to replace Ledger and brink Joker back either.

We're basically in the same situation we were after BB.

He's being coy. He'll do another small movie then be back. I'd be surprised if he didn't already have a good idea of the direction he'll go in..

I know everyone thinks the Joker is the end all be all of villains, but i think it'd be unfair to bring any of the villains back for a major role. It's unfair to the other villains that haven't been done justice yet on film.

Catwoman, riddler, hatter, Freeze, bane, Clayface, man bat, Poison Ivy, Black mask etc.

Granted some of them are less interesting than others, but they are some of the best, most in depth complicated and fascinating characters in history. It's world mythology even here. As much as I love to see the Joker doing his thing, I'd like to get a couple decent bat-movies with the other villains first. Just so they're all fairly done.

The only villain I could see returning is Ras. The always do that "3rd movie connects to the first movie" jazz. So Ras could be a nice twist and also be very convincing. He left Gotham after the events in Begins to recover and give Bruce a chance to prove himself. Now he sees how much worse he's made it and once again (as he does in the comics) attempts to get Batman to join him. Batman, now solidified permanently in his "no-kill" policy BECAUSE OF the Joker, turns him down. Then you could do a whole thing with Bane (he did work under Ras as Ubu at one point I believe) and that could explain Bane very much.

Bane:
Knows Bruce is Batman.
Knows how he fights.
Knows how he thinks.
Knows his motivation.
Knows his stance on moral issues and what he does.

All this he could get from Ras. Not to mention Ras could very well be taking a "play out of Bruce's playbook" with the theatrics and fighting fire with fire. That's why Bane wears his mask and all that. You don't even need venom IMO. Or if it is, it could just be a suped up steroid he takes. Nothing linked into his brain and all that.

Idk, just saying.

He'll be back, I mean if his return depends on the story, well he, Goyer, and Jonah are the ones creating them.

This is exactly what I said right after "TDK" was released. I'm not surprised about, concerned about or questioning his answer. It's the answer we all should've expected, obviously.

If Nolan can find a story that is both worth telling and poses a positive filmmaking challenge to him then he'll do it.

But if he can't (don't confuse with saying he won't) then be prepared for him to be off the director's chair.

That said, I think he will find a story to tell again...now we just wait.

All I gotta say about this interview really is just this:

Finally something.

It's all starting over again.

This really is the first piece of legit "BB3 news". Even if it is a "I'll think about it, kids" comment by Nolan.

.......I miss that damn Rory pumpkin. At least then I knew when i had something to look forward to. Midnight every night. lol.

Bane as League of Shadows member? I like.

I love the idea as Bane as the Anti-Batman...He's as smart and as good a fighter. Give Bats a challenge on all levels.
