With GL looks to be a commercial failure, does Marvel still have the guts to put their own space faring superhero?

a ... Nova... movie... You're kidding, right? He's nearly a complete unknown by anyone who isn't familiar with comics. Even people who do know comics are gonna go "You mean the herald of Galactus?"

Recognisability is irrelevent really. Iron Man or Thor weren't know by the audience. And Nova not being that well know by comic fans is a disgrace, considering he is one of the best heroes in Marvel's stable.

Anyway. I don't think Marvel should be disheartened by the flop of Green Lantern. That didn't flop because of the concept, it flopped because the concept was badly executed. I guarantee if the movie embraced the Green Lantern Corps and had more focus on the cosmic adventure side of the story, like the marketing promised, it would have been a better movie and more well received.

I think it is irrelevent. You make the character recognisable by making a great film about them. Advertising the film with great trailers.

I mean Iron Man is the greatest example of this. He was an A-Lister in the comics sure, but the general public had never heard of him. But then you cast people like RDJ and Jeff Bridges, release awesome looking trailers and make a great film? Recognisability, or lack thereof, goes out the window.

I don't think that's true at all. Iron man has been around since the 1960s. A lot of people have at least heard of him. The character has been in cartoons since those early days, and in countless video games since the 1990s. There's been a base knowledge of Iron Man subtly woven through pop culture for some time now. Nova does not have that.

Hmm that's fair enough. But the name Iron Man alone wouldn't draw people to the box office.

I will agree with you that the marketing for Iron Man was spectacular, that definitely had something to do with it.

I'm pretty sure if you asked anyone in the general public about Iron Man before his movie came out, they would have first thought you were referring to the Black Sabbath song. The character had some presence in other media, but nothing remarkably notable or successful. Not at the level of Spider-Man or the X-Men when it comes to Marvel characters.

If a cool-looking trailer featuring the Nova character was released, and the Marvel name was behind it, that would definitely pique people's interest. If they delivered with a good movie, people would come.

Well, we're all just speculating really. It's easy for me to say people know who Iron Man is, what with the knowledge I already had of the character since I was a kid.

Nova's in the same league with Ghost Rider & Blade(before their movies) with regards to how much the GA know about them.

Blade's a curious case really though. I bet barely anyone knew it was a Marvel property. They just saw Wesley Snipes as some bad ass vampire hunter.

Ghost Rider had Nic Cage and Eva Mendes.

If Nova gets made they need to get some big actors involved, market it as an epic space adventure... and actually DELIVER on that part. I'd say skip the origin as well. Just start it out with Rich as a rookie Nova already.

I'd rather see a Silver Surfer movie if we're talking Marvel's epic space adventure. Hell, I'd rather see a Quasar movie first.

yea i would rather see the silver surfer as well, but it's on the shelf at fox so that's out the window. i was hoping gl would be so epic that the silver surfer might get dusted off. quasar would be interesting as well even though his power is similar to gls. i just want to see more cosmic stuff i am really disappointed gl is not the space epic i thought it would be. could have opened a flood gate of cosmic films, now who knows.

As far as the character not being known, does it really matter? Going based on that, then you could have said something like Star Wars or Avatar would have failed because no one knew about those characters. I have full faith in Marvel, and they really should do something like this, with as little cgi as possible though, star wars shows that using practical effects can be more striking, effective, and even better looking sometimes.

They should at least look at it. Even though CBM's may die out they could differentiate themselves by introducing some space based SciFy, which there is always a market for. Just use Green Lantern as an example of what not to do.

Capt. Marvel would be a good idea on many levels. It would beat DC's Captain Marvel to the GA's public consciousness and pretty much seal the deal in that fight forever. It would also be an ideal way to eventually bring the much more popular Ms. Marvel to the silver screen. And it could also fill the space saga quota for Marvel's movie universe.

Captain Marvel is dead and so last century. Nova vs Darkhawk, please?

Exactly

I would rather they do a Captain Marvel Kree-Skrull war movie. It would be different from the other Marvel movies and be more Sci-Fi Star Wars like.

That would be terrible. The REAL Captain Marvel is the one who deserves that name, not that lame Kree guy. Captain Marvel's been around since the 1940's. Not to mention the fact that Mar-Vell was NEVER successful. How long did his longest selling title go? 30 issues? You know why he was never successful? Because he wasn't created as a worthwhile character in his own right. He was created so that Marvel Comics could squat on the name. That was it. That's why he's never been worth jack.

You're thinking of the wrong Nova. This is the one people are talking about.

right now, with the success of IM and Thor and all the excitement for Cap and Avengers, people will probably go to the movie just because it is the new Marvel movie, so yes, Nova will work.
And Marvel is not stupid, they will make the space opera aspect work. It's not THAT hard to. The people in charge at DCE/WB are probably morons.
