Now Introducing HBO Max Classic

As others have pointed out, there was just about nothing for investors, customers, or creatives working for the company to get excited about - satisfying no one.
Because Zaslav isn't a creator or interested in producing something purely for the satisfaction of having produced it. He's a glorified accountant who only cares about the bottom line. Thats fine for a business in a purely business sector. But this is Hollywood and media. It has to indulge indepent talent and artists. It has to indulge an extremely vocal type of consumer. It has to take risks. It has to spend money to please consumers. And it has to trust that it's talent knows what the hell it's doing. Him coming in dismissing the hard work of Emmy award winners and talented people with decades of experience was crazy.

If Zaslav only thinks about money and maximizing profits he's going to turn WB and HBO into a temporarily successful pariah.

Wow, that’s tons. This really is bad.

Hollywood and media has always been about business. The problem is that they spent too much money in the past, so much so that they are billions in debt and over leveraged. It wasn’t too long ago that people were complaining about streaming and how there so was so much content without the quality. He wants to course correct that which is a good thing. I think it’s still way too early to tell either way how he’ll do.

Yeah, on Netflix. I dont know anyone that thinks that about HBO. HBO mostly produces high quality content. When AT&T bought WB the big fear and rumor was that they wanted to increase HBO's output and focus on quantity over quality. That they weren't happy with HBO's priorities. It's never been about HBO reducing their quantity. It was already at a respectable level compared to Netflix. They take their time and target quality. That's why HBO is a staple in television.

Discovery has come in and went in the other extreme direction. Killing HBO, taking away a chunk of WB's back catalogue, and based on Zaslav's history he will pivot HBO towards quantity over quality by producing more cheap garbage and monetizing everything he can. The stuff Discovery has prioritized.

This is course correction right off a cliff.

I don’t think there’s anything to suggest he’s going to cut the quality of HBO. He has kept on Casey Bloys and his team and have said they’ll put more money in it. There’s a difference between HBO and HBO Max. I think there was a lot of bloat with HBO Max where they were spending a lot of money on shows but the return wasn’t there in increased subscriptions. But they have debunked the rumor that they were cutting 70% of scripted staff.

HBO Max is HBO. Its their only app. Anything produced by HBO goes on that app. Removing a chunk of WB's back catalogue, animation, and canceling shows left and right is cutting the quality. That we pay for every month.

Every month a bunch of movies gets rotated out and new ones come in. Every streaming service does that due to previous agreements. There hasn’t been any confirmation that they’re permanently removed and you will never see them again.

I think judging each movie separately is the best way to go. Some keep on making money after months and some stop making money after a few weeks. They should wait and see how a film is performing in the box office before deciding anything. Not that I would mind a return to the good ol' 90-day window wait. It's just the 45-day window by default that is dumb.
Agreed. If something is showing Maverick legs keep it out till it eventually dies off. Just put them on streaming as soon as the dailies fall below a certain level.

Having to have agreements with third parties is a weakness/dependence and why Netflix the original champion suddenly had it hard when those third parties wanted to compete themselves and restrict content. If you create original content without external licenses you can have things on there for good and your customers can relax and watch things at their leisure.

I remember the first time I was going to subscribe to Netflix to watch Lost and then realised it had been removed. Was seriously disappointed and didn’t subscribe again for a long time. Also remember when Sky (UK cable) announced Clone Wars was leaving and I had a week to watch the whole thing around work.

They just keep finding new ways to hurt us... :(

Supposedly the Constantine series is still happening. But it seems like its game-over for any "niche" DC properties. And by niche I mean "doesn't show up on Zaslav's grandkid's lunchbox."

This is insanely gross. HBO Max is officially the worst service.

I haven’t even heard of most of them
And? I mean you're an adult, and have seemingly been so for awhile. Unless your big into animation, why would you know a bunch of shows aimed at kids and teens from the last 5 years?
