NYPD Cop Bust Bad Guy, Then Commits Suicide

Minutes after he arrested someone on a robbery charge, an NYPD sergeant reportedly shot himself to death outside his Brooklyn police station last night.

According to the New York Post, the sergeant returned from the robbery bust and told a colleague he was going downstairs to get something. Thirty minutes later, police found the officer in his car, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The sergeant, who was recently transferred to Brooklyn's 66th Precinct, was about to be promoted to detective, according to the New York Daily News' police source.

“People always say, ‘The signs, the signs,’ but there were no signs,” the source told the Daily News. “We’re all a little bit shell-shocked and saddened.”

A witness described the scene to the Daily News:

Efriam Baruch, 15, was on 59th St. near 16th Ave. when he said he heard two gunshots.

“I was down the block and heard two funny noises, like firecrackers exploding,” said the teenager. “I ran over to see what happened and I see all of this action, cops running out of the precinct to a car. It looked like someone was in the car.”

The teen added that he saw the dead sergeant hunched over near the passenger side of the car.

“It looked to me like (the officer) was laying down in the front of the car by the dashboard,” he said. “It’s a sad situation.”
Police have not released the sergeant's name or any information about a possible motive.

Sad stuff, sounded like a good cop. Wonder why he felt it was necessary to kill himself. Very weird

How horrible. Being promoted in a new Precinct to detective and decides to do this? Something must of been going on really wrong in his personal life....

Everything points to depression but it also feels like there is more to it than just a depressed cop who despite a promising future gave into suicidal thoughts.

2 shots? Did the witness hear two shots or an echo of one shot that sounded like two? Was no one else nearby when he died? They didn't say where he shot himself so why two shots? He was new to the precinct so I don't think anyone had the time to know whether or not he was depressed. It sounds suspiciously like murder given the scant details we've heard and there is surely more to it than we're hearing for them to think suicide so quickly.

They heard two funny noises. That could of been a shot and glass shattering combined. Also he could of pulled the trigger twice depending on where he shot himself. Who knows really , but they should investigate the incident to see what might of lead him to do this.

I think they should. As harsh as I can be about the cops on the forums I always try to temper that about knowing most of them aren't bad people and this sounds like something that should be investigated more thoroughly as possibly staged. That's why I added the tinfoil hat. It's completely guessing from the description that he might not have pulled the trigger himself.

Witness said he heard two funny noises, like fire crackers exploding, indicting BOTH noises sounded like that. Ignoring the fact that a windshield does not shatter (and if I remember correctly, neither do the side windows on police cruisers) any noise caused by the bullet exiting a windshield would occur simultaneously with, and be drowned out by the gunshot itself.

I too am curious about the two shots, though. I'm interested to know how much time was between the shots and where in fact the bullet(s) hit. If he was hit once, then the second shot was almost certainly an echo (though this depends on the surrounding area).
