Ocean's 8 (Bullock, Blanchett, Hathaway)

...

Really? :funny:

It wasn't stated outright in the film, but you honestly didn't catch on to the serious vibes between Debbie and Lou, the characters played by Bullock and Blanchett? The touchy-feeliness and constant physical closeness? The feeding each other? The joking about Debbie proposing to Lou? The constant long, lingering looks? The obvious jealousy from Lou whenever Debbie's *****ebag ex got brought up? Debbie talking about her and Lou 'going through a rough patch' which is why she got together with said *****ebag ex in the first place? Yes, grown women can be close, but it's not usual for them to be that close and have that much sexual chemistry if they're 'just friends'. :cwink: I guess it's possible to miss if you're not looking for it, but it honestly jumps out of the screen when you're a gay gal like me. :woot:

One of the costume designers revealed on instagram that the original script made it a lot more clear that Debbie and Lou are exes and not just friends (which played into Lou's dress sense and general characterisation), but for some reason (lol Hollywood :whatever:) that element got filtered down as filming went on to make it more ambiguous.

For me the most definitive clue was Debbie admiring Lou in her fancy outfit :D

I've booked this for Thursday morning but have to wait to see if I'm totally free and can make it.

 I'm going to see it again at some point this week.

:woot:

There was also Debbie and Lou randomly kissing in Daphne masks (presumably when they were trying to distract Rose at her lunch with Daphne) which unfortunately didn't make it into the final film. :csad:

I think that's just it though... Anything that overtly suggested the possibility of direct romantic entanglement between our leads was left on the cutting room floor. I wish it was as obvious as to the relationship of our leads in this. Maybe they would have had some chemistry. As it was done in the final product they seemed simply drained of any charisma. I am sorry but I think Bullock and the studio blinked big time. I mean... You can't tell me that bit at the end with Cate solo with her motorcycle wasn't a reshoot because they were afraid of some kind of backlash? This film's success owes as much to it simply being budgeted well as to it's characters and plot, which I found too breezy and light for it's own good.

I've bemoaned that fact a few times in this thread, but Hollywood will be Hollywood unfortunately. I'm just (maybe naively) hoping that they'll actually have the balls to make the relationship canon in the possible sequel.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the rest though, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett most definitely do have chemistry, a great deal of it if you ask me, if they didn't no one would have even picked up on the romantic subtext between their characters in the first place. And the film was indeed budgeted well, but that alone doesn't explain it's financial success at all. It's already fast approaching $200 mil WW (without even opening everywhere yet) and is currently looking to outgross both Ocean's 12 and 13, which proves that it has very much found an audience. Just look on social media for proof, this movie is crazy popular amongst females in their teens and up and it has especially caught on in a big way amongst the online lesbian community, of which I'm an active participant so I know firsthand. It has a growing fanbase already and is making bank, you better believe that WB are happy about the situation. There will be a sequel out by 2021 at the latest, I'd put money on it. :cwink:

Also I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of push for Hathaway in awards season, she could very well get Golden Globe nomination for this. That will only bring more attention to the film

Eh... They felt dull as hell to me.

Quick... Without referring to the cake moment or the Carter scene with them trying to distract her quote me any lines or truly witty dialogue between them (Sandra/Cate) or any of the other ladies in the cast? For the life of me... I can't think of one. (As I pointed out before, Pitt and Clooney's too cool for school minimalist worked because Damon was there in an apprentice capacity to prod them as characters to give us more dialogue and insights into Rusty and Danny. )

It maybe that while I like both Bullock and Blanchett as performers I don't have a "thing" for either. And maybe, yeah as a dude I can't get how even the tiniest hint of a lead duo being bi/lesbians matters to many in the audience.

I just felt that all over this cast was underused and that a big issue with it being so lifeless for myself was the barely there charisma emitted by Deb and Lou. I really wish this had been a truly fun romp with an honest to goodness lesbian duo as the lead characters but I came away thinking at best it was serviceable but nothing to write home about on it's merits as a heist movie.

Look, I'm not really sure what the point of this back and forth is. You already said in your previous post that this film didn't resonate with you personally, and I've already pointed out that that's all fine and dandy, but it clearly did with many other people, specifically women (which, let's be honest, WB were ultimately marketing this movie to), and even more specifically the lesbian community. Because while the 'tiniest hint of a lead duo being bi/lesbians' may not be important to you, it's really really important to that community (my community) who are so starved of representation in mainstream movies that even the slightest hint of it can be a very big deal to us and a reason for excitement. Is that a sad state of affairs and do I wish things were different? Sure, but unfortunately it's the way things are at this point in time.

Another thing I think you're ultimately missing is how rare it actually is to have a mainstream movie with a majority female cast at all. Sure, there are plenty of films with lots of female characters in them, but all the main characters being female? How often does that actually happen in comparison to the sheer number of films that come out every year where all the main cast are male? On top of that, a huge majority of movies that come out with primarily female casts are of a certain genre and portray the women in a certain way. Films like Sex and the City, Mean Girls, Bridesmaids, Girl's Trip (which I'm not dragging btw, I enjoy a good girly comedy as much as the next person) don't portray women being cool and professional and badass and hyper-competent like O8 does and like so many all-male cast films do. That's what a lot of women are loving about this film, actually seeing a bunch of slick, professional women working really well together and doing something extremely badass. Men get that kind of thing all the time, but we women don't. We're usually the wives, the girlfriends, the mothers, the sisters. Not the super cool lady thieves and con artists.

Full disclosure, while I've seen the other Oceans films (and mildly enjoyed them), I'm not into them in any way at all. But O8 I am into, primarily because I much prefer the cast of this movie to the original trilogy and I hugely enjoy just seeing them all together, being awesome and having chemistry, because yes I do think they all have great chemistry. I just saw it for a second time and I enjoyed it a lot more this time than I did the first. Do I think it's an amazing film with beautifully written dialogue and Oscar winning acting and directing? Heck no. It's a fairly superficial fluffy popcorn flick. But it's an entertaining superficial fluffy popcorn flick with a fab cast. Bring on the sequel I say. I can't wait. :woot:

On my way to watch this now.

All of this! And we need more of this!

I enjoyed it.

Bulllock and Blanchett, real power couple.

Big fans of them both.

I had a feeling that you'd like it dude. :woot:

I'm currently rewatching Eleven (hadn't seen it for years) and although I'm enjoying it, dear lord Don Cheadle's English accent in this movie must be the absolute worst in cinematic history. I'm actively cringing through all of his scenes. :funny:

I really enjoyed it, it doesn't try to be anything but a fun heist film and I love the dynamic between Debbie and Lou.

I hope we get Ocean's 9, would be fun to have a female villain next time and also more cameos from the original Ocean's trilogy, maybe Tess Ocean or Rusty.

I sort of wonder if Clooney could back from the dead if Bullock doesn't want to do another one.
Or [better]bring in the x-wife Tess.

Other than maybe another tiny cameo don't really need see a sequel become filled with the 11 cast.
I'm fine with reference to the open ended fate of (Clooney)Danny Ocean, but that doesn't need to be answered here either, not with a cameo.
If anyone from the first trilogy becomes a player here, it should be Tess.

I did find it amusing that
almost no one in the movie apart from Amita thought Danny was dead and I think they've left it ambiguous for a sequel

I wonder how Tess could fit in, maybe she could get conned by the film's villain and so in desperation, she asks Debbie and her crew for help seek revenge.

Really glad you enjoyed it. I have a few issues with the film (editing, needing slightly more back story and character development, e.t.c), but other than that I unashamedly love it. I have some free cinema voucher codes from work so I'm seriously considering going to see it for a third time next week. And yeah, I love Debbie and Lou so much.

Yeah, hard no to Bullock being replaced with Clooney. It's not that I don't like him, but I want my all girl team back, thanks. All of them. I doubt Bullock would have signed up for this film in the first place if she wasn't willing to come back for a potential sequel or sequels. I imagine that was the studio's plan all along.

Definitely open to more cameos from the original team (including Tess) though. I'd love to see Rusty, or even more Reuben. I really liked his brief scene in O8. :woot:

One thing I liked was how they showcased at the beginning Debbie's skills as a con artist, from getting the items in the department store to blagging the room at the hotel room.

I enjoyed it, I thought it went a bit too long, none of the stuff with Corden was needed, they didn't need to walk us through everything, they just needed the [BLACKOUT]Anne and secondary jewel heist reveals[/BLACKOUT] and then the end montage, but the characters and the central heist were entertaining. .

Yeah, I had that feeling too when I saw the cast. ;)

Yeah, that was a really great little sequence and showed what a badass Debbie is. From leaving prison with only $40 to her name to all that expensive designer swag and a free luxury hotel room within hours. :woot:

I'm wondering if the real purpose of the Corden stuff at the end was to do a little setup for the potential sequel. Like O12 showed the fallout after the big heist in O11 (with Terry Benedict catching up to the gang and taking revenge), O9 might in part go into the fallout of the heist in O8, with insurance investigators on the gang's collective asses, e.t.c.

I've just rewatched O11 (which is great) and O12 (which is mostly boring and overly silly in places like the whole Tess as Julia Roberts nonsense), going on to rewatch O13 now. :woot:

In other news, O8 has now officially outgrossed O13 domestically and will overtake O12 in a matter of days. Internationally it's been a little slower because of the World Cup, but it's still doing well and hasn't even opened in Japan in particular yet (which has historically been the Oceans franchise biggest international market) so things are looking really good. Also, O8 is officially WB's second highest grosser of the year so far after Ready Player One, and it has a very good shot of coming within a few mill of RPO's domestic gross on a much smaller budget. Where's our sequel announcement already?

If they have a third movie with this crew, the antagonist for the third movie should be Danny. :wow:

Well, yeah, but that's comparing with 11 and 14 year-old ticket prices; it will probably catch O13's adjusted domestic eventually, but probably not O12.

It's still hovering around break-even at this point.

O13 has Clooney in a tux so that's a plus :)

O13 is way better than O12, I honestly struggled to get through O12 in places it was so boring.

Well yeah, I was talking unadjusted figures. I never said otherwise. The point is that O8 is an undeniable financial success for WB and hopefully that means we'll get a sequel announcement sometime soon. :cwink: And I'm not sure what you mean about 'break-even' considering it's already made it's budget back over three times?
