Ocean's 8 (Bullock, Blanchett, Hathaway)

I can't believe how well this is still doing domestically, despite all the big movies that have opened in the past 4 weeks (Jurassic World, Incredibles 2, AMATW, e.t.c.) and despite the fact that it's down to just over 1000 screens, it's still making decent money. Currently stands at $135,639,512 domestic, only under $2 mil behind the domestic gross for Ready Player One (WB's highest domestic grosser of the year so far.) Also, RPO's budget was $105 million more than Ocean 8's.

It's still to open in Italy and Japan, two big markets for the previous Oceans films. I'm thinking it could quite comfortably achieve $10 mil in Italy (especially now that the World Cup has finished) and hopefully around $30 mil in Japan (it's certainly possible, the previous films ranged from $27 mil for O13 to $51 mil for O11, and I can definitely see this film catching on with young Japanese women), which will push it's WW gross comfortably over the $300 mil mark. By that time, it will have made over four times it's budget.

Awesome. :woot:

Tea from another board:

Excellent tea, thanks Harle. :woot: I know O8 will likely be pushed into third place by Fantastic Beasts 2 and Aquaman domestically by the end of the year, but when you compare the budgets of those two films (and RPO's) against O8's, WB have to be pleased.

Deleted scenes, yes! They better include all the Debbie/Lou flashback scenes and backstory that was cut. :chd:

RPO was still a big hit for WB thanks to OS especially China and is still WB's biggest movie WW, likewise Rampage but Ocean's 8 has done enough for a sequel. It's a shame OS wasn't as strong but there is room for growth.

Oh yeah, I was purely talking domestic numbers in that post, not international. RPO was a much bigger film overseas than O8. But still, a mid-range budgeted, smallish movie like O8 outgrossing a huge, CGI laden tentpole like RPO domestically is pretty impressive if you ask me. A sequel announcement is hopefully in the works.

Overseas has been slow across the board (not just for O8) for a multitude of reasons (the World Cup, the crazy heatwaves across Europe, e.t.c), but it isn't quite tapped out yet. O8 has only just been released in Italy who's numbers haven't been added to the WW total yet, and it's also yet to open in Japan which historically has been the biggest international market for the Oceans films. It's WW gross is already at about $270 mill, I think Italy and Japan can quite easily push it over $300 mill. Fingers crossed. :woot:

Finally saw this. Decent flick. They definitely need to give everyone more to do in the inevitable sequel.

Well, they've got all of the introductions and associated exposition out of the way now (except for the inevitable 9th member of course), so hopefully that will be the case. I also think a sequel needs a little more in the way of conflict, with perhaps the next big heist not running quite so smoothly and it definitely needs a better villian. Maybe they could bring Terry Benedict back, Debbie could be trying to take him down because she believes he had Danny killed or something like that.

And, most importantly, they need to make a certain relationship canon:

That's literally what they do throughout the entire movie, just blatantly eye**** each other. It's so sexually frustrating! :oldrazz:

It looks so good when you put all the gifs together. :woot: I need them to make a short just based on this.

Saw this today. I thought it was meh. It has all the ingredients of Ocean's 11 but without the style, flair, or panache. Felt very rote.

Thought Blanchett was more charismatic than Bullock. Totally agree there was a lesbian-ish subtext between them.

Anne Hathaway was obviously having fun and Helena Bonham Carter was her usual self. Anyone else think it's in HBC's contract or something that every movie she gets to stick a bunch of stuff in her hair? There's always something going on up there.

Some stuff felt half-baked, like James Corden not showing up until the 11th hour, etc. Armitage was a pretty underdeveloped "villain".

Also the movie totally like goes out of its way to tease Clooney showing up and then doesn't deliver, which is just setting the audience up for disappointment.

These are pretty much my thoughts, too. Just a bland rehash of the earlier films without any character development or tension. This movie really needed a true antagonist, and a feeling that the heist wasn't a sure thing. I also hate when franchises kill characters off screen, especially when the actors are still alive and able to be involved.

I liked this. I agree that O8 lacked the flair of O11 (or O12 & O13 for that matter) but I still liked it.

The movie moved at a very languid pace from the beginning when compared with O11. There was no characters like the Malloy twins who are constantly bickering or like Linus who seems to be biting off more than he can chew and in danger of screwing up the job. Or someone with a sexy accent!

Bullock and Blanchett are powerhouse actresses but they are not Clooney and Pitt from early '00s and it really shows. Danny and Rusty had this magical bromance which is sorely missing here. Blanchett barely did anything of note which was surprising.

The movie really picks up from the moment we enter the Met gala and I loved everything that happened from there. I even like Corden! I loved the actual theft and the thought put into the whole thing. It was rather nifty the way the ladies nicked the Cartier necklace and carried it out of the Gala. It was cool.

You can probably re-title this Haute Couture: The Movie. It was like London, Paris, Milan, New York Fashion week best collections parade, lol.
