Maybe already posted but I'll put it in spoiler tags. It's the size of the map compared to Skyrim and some older Zelda games. It's pretty darn big.

[FONT=&quot]The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a long time coming and it's finally here (well, in two days)! However, before Breath of the Wild, there was another type of Zelda game being thrown around the offices of Nintendo.
When Nintendo was coming up with the idea for a new Zelda game, they pitched the idea of your normal, 3D Zelda game with a twist, aliens invade Hyrule. They didn't delve too much into exactly what the game would've been about beyond that basic pitch, but you can see a screenshot of it above alongside some very basic concept art that shows off the aliens and more.
To go even further from the series' expected tone and features, Nintendo also considered turning in the iconic hero, Link, into a biker. Yeah, we think it's kind of weird too. It's hard to tell what the game featuring biker Link would've been about, but it's interesting to see what runs through Nintendo's mind when creating a new game.

Nintendo also detailed their pitch for Breath of the Wild! To pitch the game's gameplay, the team built a 2D Zelda prototype that showed off some of the mechanics that Nintendo wanted to include.

Despite it being 2D, they describe it as a "legitimate Breath of the Wild prototype". They even went as far as to show side by side comparisons of the 2D version and the final 3D version of the game to show how close they are in terms of gameplay concepts.

I'm pleased, too.

The last comparison video that was made had the Wii U version looking HUGELY inferior to the Switch. Some people speculated the creator had placed a filter of the U's video, and I'm beginning to think it was true when comparing here. The differences here are incredibly minor.
Was it the IGN one? Because that video was BS. It took really old footage and compared it to what was said to be on the Switch. Without making the obvious point that the overall game itself looked a ton better. So it wasn't comparing the Wii U to the Switch, but really old footage against brand new footage. So disingenuous imo.

So the reviews are popping up online. To call them glowing would probably be an understatement. People are throwing around terms like "best Zelda game ever" or even "best game ever" rather liberally. In either case, that's a bold claim to make. But people are hyperbolic weirdos sometimes, so it could go either way.

So far the game is at a 98 on metacritic after 37 reviews. Both IGN and gamespot gave it a 10 and so far the worst score I have seen is 9/10 and 18/20 which would be like a 9/10.

I mean, I'll fight a mother****er who says it's better than Link to the Past. I haven't even played Breath of the Wild yet, but I don't care. Throwing haymakers.

I feel like this is how every new release goes. Skyward Sword was the "best" for a bit. Still the changes sound rather exciting to me.

Even though most Zelda's get praised (and I agree love the series). Just reading the reviews watching live streams, this one seems to be one that truly moves the series into a new realm. I must have been one of those few that did not care for Skyward Sword though, I remember fighting about it on these forums haha.

I'm excited though, cannot wait to sink my teeth into this.

Yeah, screw Amazon's discount. I am going to have to get this tomorrow.

I know people laugh when I say it, but I still think A Link Between Worlds is my favorite Zelda. It's a much more concise and enjoyable A Link to the Past, which is still one of my favorites, as well.

Anyways, I can't wait to play this tomorrow. :hmr:

Reviews are indeed glowing, but press for Skyward Sword was too and I ****ing hated that game with every fiber of my being so I am going to reserve judgement until I play it tomorrow.

what are the reviews saying about the story and characters?

Reviews I read didn't touch on story and character much, likely to avoid spoilers.

Wow. Seeing so many amazing, and mostly perfect, scores for this game is very encouraging.

I'm in the minority in liking linear games more than open world adventures. But if there's any franchise that could get me on board with an open world, it's Zelda.

I agree Scarecrow. I'm not the biggest fan of sandbox games as most end up being kind of empty, but this new Zelda seems like it's blowing minds.

yeah. I didn't hear much about the story/characters in the review I read. but that's the most important thing to me. lol.

If Red Dead 2 wasn't coming I'd say it was for sure GOTY.

don't forgot Mass Effect Andromeda as a GOTY contender.

Oh yeah. Horizon came out to good reviews too, but don't know if it'll be a GOTY contender. No matter what though 2017 is gonna be a rad year for gaming.

OK I got a few video reviews and the round up of the others below

Link's newest adventure is a radical departure that abandons many of the series' established elements in favor a more open world that constantly encourages and rewards you for exploring the unknown.

[FONT=&quot]The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been brewing for a long, long time. For a while, we thought it would never even release. But tomorrow, we will all finally have the chance to play it. But will it be good? Yeah, it's going to be incredible according to some press who have played dozens if not hundreds of hours of the highly anticipated game.
The Legend of Zelda series is no stranger to high scores but it is a surprise to see Breath of the Wild as the 4th highest rated game on Metacritic. The game currently sits at an average score of 98/100 on Metacritic with over 50 positive reviews and 0 negative reviews. Below, you'll find some excerpts from reviews from some of the major websites.
Note: All of these come from the Nintendo Switch version, but it'll likely closely reflect the Wii U version.
IGN
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterclass in open-world design and a watershed game that reinvents a 30-year-old franchise. It presents a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored. I’ve had so many adventures in Breath of the Wild, and each one has a unique story behind what led me to them, making them stories on top of stories. And even after I’ve spent more than 50 hours searching the far reaches of Hyrule, I still manage to come across things I haven’t seen before. I’ll easily spend 50 to 100 more trying to track down its fascinating moments.

Every night, I sat on the couch and played until I genuinely couldn’t stay awake any longer. Every morning, I couldn’t get out of bed and turn on the Switch fast enough. Near the end, I found myself getting sad as I climbed the final towers and saw the map fill in. This Hyrule gave me such a profound sense of discovery, and I never wanted the mysteries to end. Even now, I have no idea of the purpose of numerous things that I saw. Ganon may be dead and I watched the credits roll, but I want to keep jumping back in until I’ve seen everything there is to see.
This sense of wonder is something that I haven’t felt so strongly since I played A Link to the Past when I was seven years old. Ocarina of Time was able to capture some of that same magic in my teenage years. Now that I’m in my thirties, I don’t think that I expected it to be possible for a game to make me feel like that again. I’ve been reviewing video games for twelve years now, and I’m used to describing games in a certain way. “This game controls well. This mechanic is innovative. The graphics are stunning. The skill tree feels limited.” That type of language doesn’t adequately convey how Breath of the Wild made me feel. Nintendo may have changed so many long-standing traditions of the Zelda franchise, but the spirit of discovery is as strong as it’s ever been no matter your age. I didn’t think I’d feel the Zelda magic this strongly ever again, but I couldn't be happier to be proven wrong.
5/5 Stars
GameSpot
No matter how gorgeous its environments are, how clever its enemies are, and how tricky its puzzles get, the fact that Breath of the Wild continues to surprise you with newfound rules and possibilities after dozens of hours is by far its most valuable quality. It's a game that allows you to feel gradually more and more empowered yet simultaneously manages to retain a sense of challenge and mystery--which, together, creates a steady, consistent feeling of gratification throughout the entire experience. Breath of the Wild is a defining moment for The Legend of Zelda series, and the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created.

GameInformer
Breath of the Wild is an achievement in the design of a living world. Hyrule is massive, with multiple environmental systems layered on top of a grand adventure. The only technical issue I encountered was one related to the framerate when fighting multiple enemies in busy forests. Despite the massive scope of the game, Breath of the Wild retains Nintendo’s knack for polish without any major technical hiccups to disrupt the experience. I was entranced by this version of Hyrule, and it surprised me at nearly every turn, from its wealth of discoveries to the way it shuns the established tropes of previous Zelda games. It represents a profound new direction for one of gaming’s best franchises and a new high point for open-world interactive experiences.
10/10
Polygon
I guess, in the end, it’s not just that Breath of the Wild signals that Zelda has finally evolved and moved beyond the structure it’s leaned on for so long. It’s that the evolution in question has required Nintendo to finally treat its audience like intelligent people. That newfound respect has led to something big, and different, and exciting. But in an open world full of big changes, Breath of the Wild also almost always feels like a Zelda game — and establishes itself as the first current, vital-feeling Zelda in almost 20 years.
10/10
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases March 3rd on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.

I just picked up my Wii U version. Kinda bummed there's no manual or map inside. It's just a case and a disk, lol. I was expecting some kind of map or at least a manual. I guess those days are gone?

Anyways, excited to play, and then I'm off to see Logan. Full day of nerdy ****.

Do you not buy games often? Those days have long since been gone. If a game has a manual/map inside, consider that the exception. The vast majority do not and havent for a while

Most Nintendo games do. Smash, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Mario Maker etc all have a manual.

So I guess the question is: do you buy Nintendo games often? :hehe:

There was no manual?!?
At least not for the Wii U. Not sure about the Switch version?
