Eiji Aonuma Says Zelda Will Have A Wide Range Of Emotions In Breath of the Wild . February 8, 2017 . 8:30am

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has shared some comments on aspects of Breath of the Wild, including Zelda’s range of emotion and how he was able to implement an idea he came up with over 20 years ago.

This month, Game Informer has featured a large article on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In the article, producer Eiji Aonuma has shared some commentary on various aspects of the game. [Thanks, NintendoEverything.]

First off, Aonuma confirmed that Breath of the Wild does in fact take place after Ocarina of Time in the series’ chronology, and also gave a little insight as to how the team approached the game’s story:
“Because we wanted to redefine the whole process, I didn’t want to be chained up by the idea that we had to think about the past titles. But then again, I know there are a lot of fans who are interested, and who are knowledgeable in the Zelda franchise and the history. So by adding little elements here and there, we wanted to give the fans the opportunity to say, ‘Oh, I saw this. Maybe this is how it expands the story,’ or give little hints here and there.”

Next, Aonuma spoke a little about Zelda’s character in Breath of the Wild, saying that she will have the ability of express a wide range of emotion.
“I don’t want to get too deep into it, but I do want you to know that Zelda does have a lot of emotions and expressions, and for the trailer we chose one that was very extreme. Once you start playing Breath of the Wild, I want you to explore and see these different sides of Zelda, different emotions that she evokes.”

Lastly, Aonuma hinted at an element of Breath of the Wild’s storyline that he was able to implement 20 years after first coming up with the idea. The Zelda producer didn’t go into much detail, but he did say it would help make the game’s story more cohesive.
“In order to create more of a cohesive storyline, we added this element in there that will make it a bit more streamlined for every player. This is something I can’t reveal right now, but when you play you will find out. This idea that I am talking about is actually something I came up with when I first started developing the games. I have been harvesting this idea for 20-plus years.”

Link is the main character of The Legend of Zelda series and despite him being around for over 30 years, we know very little about him. Part of this is because he doesn't really talk, so he doesn't really have a way to communicate or express anything about himself! Miyamoto has said that this is because he wants the player to more or less feel like they are Link and having a speaking protagonist would break this illusion. Not only that but Miyamoto has also confirmed that there are multiple Links throughout time, so he wouldn't really have a definitive backstory anyways.

Regardless, Miyamoto and his team do know some information about the mysterious green tunic-wearing character, they just choose to keep most of it secret. Speaking with Game Informer, Miyamoto confirmed some interesting details about Hyrule's greatest warrior. One of these things was Link's full name which is similar to Mario's: Link Link. Yes, it's just his first name for both names.

It's unclear if he was joking because he's previously stated Mario and Luigi don't really have last names, despite the terrible movie stating their last names are Mario (hence them being the Mario brothers). At the moment, we will take this as official confirmation of him being Link Link!

Another interesting statement said by Miyamoto is that he's not human despite Hyrule being on Earth... what?! Honestly, we have no idea how to interpret this. The reveal trailer of Super Mario Odyssey has made people question if Mario is human and if he's even from our Earth.

Nintendo's got a very interesting, unique world in their hands. With the confirmation of Hyrule being on Earth, it also brings me wonder if Mario could eventually travel there during his time in our world in Super Mario Odyssey.

One other thing was confirmed, Link will not speak a full sentence (and probably not at all) in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild despite the game having a fully voiced cast of characters. This is, as previously mentioned, to help maintain the illusion of Link being an in-game representation of the player.

Game Informer also asked a bunch of other questions and got some very charming responses from Miyamoto and series producer Eiji Aonuma, you can click here to watch it.

The world is a cruel place for a number of reasons and life isn't fair for most. Some people use entertainment mediums such as films and video games to escape the ugly truths that life holds for us and that is especially the case for the late Gabe Marcelo.
Gabe Marcelo was a 27-year-old who suffered from a congenital heart defect (CHD) which left him with a single ventricle and a piece missing from the middle of his heart. The defect is typically treatable, but sadly for Gabe, things were not that simple. Gabe endured a handful of surgeries throughout his life starting before he even turned three years old.
Most people have 100% oxygen in their blood, but in high school young Gabe had only 92% and the number continued to rapidly drop as time went on. Eventually, the percentage was in the 60s rendering Gabe breathless just by sitting.
"He did not get enough oxygen to his body to have energy," said his mother, "and as a young child would 'spend' his energy and get fussy because his body just could not manage. He would go out in the backyard and not be able to get back inside because he was tired."
Gabe did find an escape, though, despite his inability to go explore the real world.
"Gaming was all the more important for the ways in which it could bring such happiness, fun, and beauty," said his mother in an interview with Waypoint. "There were characters he loved, and challenges that his very smart mind needed. It was distraction from the physical discomfort and pain."
Gabe fell in love with games when he witnessed his brother playing games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda and his love for these games continued into adulthood. Last year, Gabe wanted to attend the popular gaming event PAX Prime despite his terrible condition. The reason he wanted to go? To play Nintendo's highly anticipated title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Gabe and his family only planned to stay at the event for a day so he wouldn't get too fatigued but Gabe powered through and stayed the whole four days!
Sadly, Nintendo didn't bring Breath of the Wild to PAX Prime but Gabe's mother was determined to make Gabe's wish come true. She could tell the very idea of him being able to stay strong enough to eventually play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was what was keeping him alive.
"I called Nintendo on the phone and spoke to some really nice people who gave me an address to write to regarding 'donations,'" she told Waypoint. "I did not get any reply. I sent it again about a month later. Still nothing."
After Gabe's family made a post online, the internet rallied together to gain the attention of Nintendo and it actually worked! Nintendo reached out to the Marcelo family and invited them to Seatle where Gabe got to sit down and play an early version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for about 30 minutes. Nintendo employees gathered around to watch him play and cheer him on, giving him that heroic feeling that Link possesses in The Legend of Zelda games.
gabemarcelo.jpeg

"He was, in that game, what he was not in life," his mother said. "I could go out walking and Gabe could not join me. When I did, I thought about the fact that he could not get the benefit of fresh cool air and the freedom of just walking in our wooded neighborhood. When I saw the Zelda game, I realized that this was the wonderful world he wanted."
Two days after the Nintendo Switch event on January 12th where the price of the new console was revealed and the release date for the long-awaited The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was also shown alongside a new trailer, Gabe Marcelo passed away.
"The night before he died, he called me into his room," she said. "He wanted me to see the two-minute trailer he had downloaded. He teared up as the colors and sounds and snippets of action were coming across the screen. At the end, it said, 'coming 3-3-17.' He looked at me and said, 'I'm going to make it!' I really have to think about how happy he was, and not that he did not make it. I did remind him, that night, that he had already played Zelda... and yet I knew what he meant."
Despite his passing, Gabe's family members still has a positive outlook on things.
"Someone mentioned that when I play Breath of the Wild, I won't be alone," Gabe's brother said. "Gabe will be my Navi, helping to guide me through the game the whole time. I really love that thought."
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild releases on Wii U and Nintendo Switch on March 3rd, 2017. Many of us will surely be thinking of Gabe and his touching story when we play through the game.

Is it true that you can go straight to the final boss anytime you like? :funny:

Wait, really? You can just go to the final boss?
Yeah, it is structured in a way that I guess you can access the final boss in the first 15 mins and beat the game. But there are different end states and such.

Zelda has a season pass. :lmao:

I guess they will only adopt the crappy parts of video game business from the last decade.

They have been good on pricing, though. At least you don't have to buy the game again, like with OoT Master Quest.

Nintendo has announced an “Expansion Pass” for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which will be available for $19.99 and grant players access to two sets of downloadable content for the game due out this summer and holiday, respectively.

The downloadable content sets are the first-ever in development for a mainline Legend of Zelda series title. Here is what we know so far:

 • Content Pack #1 (Summer 2017) – Adds a “Cave of Trials” challenge, a new hard mode, and a new feature for the in-game map.
 • Content Pack #2 (Holiday 2017) – Adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and new original story.
The content packs will be available for both the Switch and Wii U versions of the game, and cannot be purchased individually (in other words, they’re only available in the Expansion Pass).

Immediately upon pre-purchase or purchase of the Expansion Pass, three new treasure chests will appear in the game’s “Great Plateau” area. One of these treasure chests will contain a shirt with a Nintendo Switch logo that Link can wear during his adventure, which is exclusive to the Expansion Pass. The other two will deliver “useful items.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will launch worldwide for Switch and Wii U on March 3.

They at least deliver good games at launch. I'd probably get it if I were buying it for the Switch. However, I'm keeping my WiiU preorder as I'm on the fence about the Switch and hesitant to sink another $20 into a dead console/ecosystem.

I'll wait until I see how they handle it before prematurely passing judgment, DLC is not a bad thing so long as its price matches its content and the base game feels substantial on its own.

The closer March 3 comes, the more I think I'm going to buy the Switch and this game that day.

Still not 100%, but it's getting more likely for me.

If you don't have it pre-ordered a release day purchase is probably going to be extremely difficult.

I know GameStop will be difficult, but WalMart, Target and those sorts of big box retailers might be your best bet. I don't remember which retailer, but I read that some of them will have day one Switch units available.

I'll be buying from Best Buy, since that's where I tend to buy my consoles.
