Call it what you will, I'm not going to waste energy arguing about it. But your "one character" definition is flawed. Sinister Six project was a spin-off, for instance, despite not focusing on one main character from the movies.

In media, a spin-off is a radio program, television program, video game, film, or any narrative work, derived from one or more already existing works

First Class was derived from the existing X-Men films.

Whereas a reboot is

In serial fiction, to reboot means to discard all continuity in an established series in order to recreate its characters, timeline and backstory from the beginning

Continuity retained (although not without multiple errors, thanks Fox!), ie not a reboot.

Bit touchy aren't you. Don't like your opinion being challenged or just having a bad day?

But your "one character" definition is flawed. Sinister Six project was a spin-off, for instance, despite not focusing on one main character from the movies.

But it involved one of the main characters from the movies in a prominent role, in this case Harry's Goblin (probably the leader of the Six judging by the ending of TASM 2). That's my point.

First Class was derived from the existing X-Men films.

I know. I said that myself. My point is it still comes off as a reboot because it's a whole new cast playing several main characters from the previous movies.

So even though it was in the Singer movie continuity, it came across like a reboot, not a spin off.

You have prequels, you have reboots. X-Men: First Class is a preboot.

Opinion has nothing to do with it. There are solid definitions for these terms for a reason.

Not really.

That's the last I'm saying on it. Feel free to have the last word if you must.

No, you can have it. You say it didn't feel like a reboot, I say it did.

What more needs to be said? Agree to disagree.

I have been meaning to buy Guardians of the Galaxy. I went to Best Buy, but they only had the DVD and the Blu-ray. I guess they were sold out of the DVD/Blu-ray combo. So I didn't buy it. Lol.

As of this moment TWS is the winner, with DOFP close behind. GOTG a distant 3rd, with TASM 2 and TMNT an even further joint 4th. Surprised TMNT has done better than some of the other movies on here, I enjoyed it and it was fun, but it wasn't what I would classify as a good movie. I have hopes for the sequel though.

DVD/Blu-Ray sales

TASM2, released in 8/2014 - 2.1 million units @ $43.7 million
TWS, released in 9/2014 - 2.9 million units @ $52.7 million
DOFP, released in 10/2014 - 3 million units @ $47 million
GOTG, released in 12/2014 - 6 million units @ $110 million

Guardians mop the floor with everyone even though it's released last.

I would definitely say that GOTG was the CBM of 2014. Made the most money both BO wise and now DVD wise.

Holy ****

Any other year GOTG would have been the best, but for me DOFP was a special movie and I just love it. GOTG is awesome though and performed well above anyone's expectations.

no way! How could it have sold twice has much has DOFP in like 2 less months?

I feel like X-men's appeal has always been relatively smaller when compared to certain other superheroes, and it appears the general interest in that franchise is somewhat subsiding.

Days of Future Past was the highest grossing X-Men film, more than doubling the worldwide gross of First Class.

Did DOFP beat X3's domestic box office?

Edit: X-Men is on the rise no doubt, Apocalypse should rank it in after DOFP's success. But gotta remember inflation and the international box office office has seen a drastic change since 06. With inflation I believe DOFP is ranked 4 in the X-Men series domestic box office.

Maybe I should have specified in my previous post, I was speaking of the US audience. The worldwide gross was astronomical, but that's a newer trend. The foreign market is most definitely growing, and it's going to make any films run a lot stronger than before.
Domestically it made around the same amount as X3 which came out 8 years ago, and, given inflation, means that the audience stateside has gone downhill since then. So, I think it's fair to say that it is somewhat subsiding. Not on a sharp decline, but I think that franchise could be running out of steam quicker than some might think. And this is coming from someone who loved First Class and DOFP.

Not quite, but it came very close. DOFP made $233.9 million domestic. The Last Stand made $234.3 million domestic. DOFP made a lot more worldwide, though.

A great number for the series for sure. Again though, international box office has changed alot since 06, X-Men had some catching up to do grabbing their audience back as well. Domestically it can still improve. With inflation X3 and X2 were pretty much at 300 million.

It doesn't surprise me that GoTG has made that much, it was the CBM event of 2014.

Internationally x-men is fine but domestically DoFP failed to out do TLS even with 3D prices. X-Men has to go big with Apocalypse in order to fully recapture people's attention and by that I mean actual mutant vs mutant fights that are exciting, creative, and not lazy. It's also good that the theme of Apocalypse will change as 5 movies of the same theme is a bit over kill. They have perfected the drama aspect needed but now it's time to truly go all out with action which is something I didn't think DOFP did, I did like First Class' action especially the final fight.

As things stand currently, the drop in ticket sales domestically from The Last Stand is more than made up for by the big gains overseas. And it's important to remember that even though domestic ticket sales are down from 2006 for the franchise, they went up from First Class.

Not really, if the international market was that way in 06 and 03 as it is now, then X3 and X2 would have made more imo. Regardless, I think Apocalypse is gonna rank it in. The series is on the right path with grabbing audiences back into the X-Men franchise with their past 3 films. Those domestic numbers should pick up.

Although it and a few other of the big titles that year may take a hit with a very crowded and competitive summer.

IMO we might get a ST09/STiD type situation with DOFP/Apocalypse next year. I think the event film feel of DOFP just inflated the gross beyond what the franchise normally earns (and not even that much, if the domestic return is any indication), and losing that aspect of DOFP will lead to not so high returns for Apocalypse.

If ifs and buts were...

Anyway, the franchise needed to pick up in both domestic and international box office from First Class to remain competitive in the current marketplace and DOFP managed to do that, especially overseas. I don't expect domestic box office to increase much, if at all, for Apocalypse, but if international box office remains strong, and perhaps goes up a bit further, then it'll be another success.

No surprise TASM 2 is bottom of the pile.

TASM, released in 11/2012 - 3.1 million units @ $65 million by the beginning of 2013.

With the release of TASM2, sales are now 3.7 million units @ $88 million.

Reason I bring this up is the almost 1 million less units sold for TASM2 for that holiday season.
