Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread - Part 1

On the one hand if this is true, then I'm excited to see how he's brought back and what is done with him (and most importantly his relationship with Peter).

On the other hand, this could be yet another mean-spirited tease like they've done a dozen times in the past. Or Ben could be brought back in the dumbest way possible (as a giant spider let's say) and all his characteristics and history are ignored at the expense of just making him an evil Peter. I have more faith in Slott than this (but have to be honest, not a whole lot more faith after some recent developments).

If they are bringing him back, I'm kinda pissed they waited until I was almost 30. The clone-saga ended when I was 14 (and started when I was 12). I would be happy if he was brought back, but I'm old and jaded enough now that it wouldn't send me into a fanboy frenzy like it would have if I was still a kid (when Spidey comics were pretty much my life).

Ironically, if they are bringing him back then almost as much time would have occurred between his "death" in 1975 and his return in 1994 ... and his "death" in 1996 and possible return in 2011. It's mind boggling how long he's been dead now. But I guess it's a sign of how strong his fanbase was that people are still asking Quesada, Wacker and Slott when Ben will return at just about every convention appearance.

I'm totally with you here.
As much as I would love to have Ben back, because he was a unique, fun character, I want his return to be done right.
No spider-monster, no mind twisted version or whatever. Remember what happened to those from the clone saga that were brought back? Grim Hunter >> huge beast. Kaine >> huge Spider-beast. This would be nothing for Ben.
And all those teases of his return over the years have made me sceptical. Plus Slott said there are no plans for Ben. And seeing how many people wear different Spidey-outfits in Spider-Island, the cover could mean anything.

Another guess would be they bring back Gwen Stacy (or her clone). Since the movie comes out next year with Gwen in it, this might be a way they are going.

Slott was pretty much against any "return of Gwen Stacy", so if she was going to return, it would indeed be a clone...

If Ben's coming back, it doesn't seem for very long. I don't think it is Ben actually. Here's the latest Marvel teaser:

That teaser doesn't really mean much. They wouldn't bring Ben back just to kill him in the same issue. I mean, I would assume if they're going through the trouble of bringing him back, they would be smarter than that.

If this is a fake-out, then Marvel has sunk to new low, because this teaser looks pretty damn definitive. Having said that, I would be disappointed, but not shocked if it was a fake-out.

I agree here. I'm a big Ben fan and wanted him to be the one true Spider-Man and, honestly, the image is kind of like a middle finger to Ben Reilly fans. OK...let me rephrase that...if they don't bring Ben Reilly back then it's a giant middle finger to fans. I'd rather just have them either leave it be or just bring him back. Tired of the teases and the "well, it's just a flashback" crap. Poop or get off the pot I think is the phrase but that's putting it nicely.

Ah, I thought I read somewhere there was a second issue which would deal with how the Jackal found Kaine after he "died"

Oh yeah, and for anyone who read the new issue of Venom... they seemed to indicate that Spider-King is a certain other star-s[angled hero... not Ben. Did I read that right?

Please don't be cryptic. Who are you talking about (because the teaser said this was an old friend of Spidey's, not an old friend of Captain America's)?

Tarantula is Kaine, Spider-King is Captain America.

I think one of the great thigns about ben personally was his interaction with peter. They both had the ethos of great power and great responsibility.

parker believed his responsibility was to still be spiderman initially
reilly belived his responsibility was to make sure parker managed to raise his family.

they were truly brothers that cared about each other and their mutual love for aunt may was well shown.

even though parker was the apparent one who got everything, he still saw himself as the clone and was ultimately the golden child, as highlighted by kaine's relationship to him. But saying this, he was the spidey pro, he had done it longer

while pete ultimately had his life stolen from him, he was apparently the real deal, but had a fresher outlook to being spidey, he didn't have the burden of a family and lived the broke life of someone who didn't have much. he also had a fresh approach to taking on villains.

the synergy between the characters i believed actually help enrich one another. ben wouldn't be as great without pete and i think parker went through a great phase while slightly depowered.

reilly's death is the only comic moment that moved me, his ongoing torture by the goblin and his final sacrifice to save parker. The only issue is that i'm somewhat surprised he didn't get a burial plot with aunt may and uncle ben.

although i didn't like it i accepted it but reilly will always be the real spiderman in my eyes. his character arc is one of the best in the entire history of spiderman and if it wasn't for him, i would have never gotten into comics.

if i would have played it out, the ben we saw die would be a clone and he would still be in osborn's basement taking a daily beating, only to eventually break out, find mayday parker and jet off somewhere for an uncle/neiece spidey relationship in another city, I could see them working in a tokyo environment.

but that's just me.

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm probably a tiny bit off-topic, but the Clone Saga got me into collecting comics hardcore in the 90's. I always liked Spider-Man, and I'd pick up comics on road trips, but when I saw "Spider-Man vs. Peter Parker?" on the cover of Web 117, I had to pick it up. From there I began buying more and more comics, and as the universe got both bigger and tighter I tried to collect everything that had anything to do with Spidey and Scarlet. Ultraverse stuff. Onslaught stuff. Everything. I've been in the process ever since, on and off, of trying to get it into chronological order and pick up all the comics I missed. Is anybody else doing the same thing?

I'm going as far as to collect every issue of Daredevil and Venom that came out during the saga, whether or not they featured Spidey. One thing in particular that I thought was awesome was the way DD, Green Goblin and Spider-Man seemed to form a sort of triangle through Foggy Nelson, which culminated in him appearing in "Revelations". He was helping Liz Osborn in her legal battle against Ben Urich in the Goblin title, then Liz started appearing in Daredevil as a friend and potentially more than a friend, and it was in Daredevil that he got the invite to Norman's little to-do at the Bugle building. I want everything even remotely relevant to be in my collection; at the same time, I'm being discriminating, so I don't want every single comic from the period. It's a tricky little exercise and I've got my own standards for what fits in and what doesn't.

Last but not least, I feel that I should post the entire list of comics in order when it's finished. Would anybody be interested in that?

The Marvel Chronology Project's already taken care of that. You can find it under Peter and Ben's chronos.

I know what you're talking about, but it's not quite enough. I'm talking about tangential stories as well as those which tie in directly. I'm talking about reading everything as a single, solid story. For example, there are issues of Prime where Spider-Man is no longer involved, but The Lizard is. I think it's still relevant as long as The Lizard is there. Then there's the issue of Green Goblin with Arcade. That one's relevant because it has Gaunt, and he's checking out the Goblin's arsenal on behalf of Norman Osborn. Another issue of Green Goblin shows the goblin gear's been taken from where Phil found it, and there's a truck with the name of Osborn's company on it pulling away, although Phil doesn't see it...but we do! And it's a hint. Therefore every issue of Green Goblin is relevant, whether or not it features Peter.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. I don't want you to feel like you're being lambasted, I just wanted to be clear about what I'm doing since it's probably pretty weird. :)

Looking foward to this.

So wait, if Ben Reilly returns, does that mean that Kane and the other surviving clones become relevant again?

They already are. Kaine's been in around four arcs since 2009 or so. Haven't you been keeping up with the books?

Yeah, Kaine has been involved in a few stories in the last year or two, and is pretty heavily involved in the current "Spider-Island" storyline. If the awesome writing in the last 3 years of stories aren't enough to get you to look into the books maybe having him thrown in there can get you in?

Anyone else want to see Ben Reilly in an adaptation of Spider-Man? Like a movie, a game, or maybe a TV show?

I came up with an idea for a TV series based on Ben's Lost Years. I think it could work considering the popularity of shows like Smallville and Heroes which featured super heroes out of costume. Ben's Lost Years seem like the most logical choice for Marvel if they want to jump on this trend of super powered characters sans costume on TV.

If done right it could build the popularity enough for the character that at the end of the show's run Marvel could do a Spider-Man movie involving the 90's Clone Saga in some way (anything done with Ben out of costume on TV could be done without violating any agreements with Sony).

After the movie they could make another series centered around Ben's time as Spider-Man, the Redemption mini, and then end it with a Revelations-esqe multi parter.

Seriously, it could work if handled right.

I was thinking more so along the lines of an appearance in a Spider-Man TV show, but that might work as well.

Unfortunately, Marvel would never give Ben the spotlight, but the thing is, it will be a long time (if at all) before they get the Spidey movie rights back from Sony.

This would actually be a good way for Marvel to show that they could do better with the character than Sony if it succeeds, and would give Marvel the grounds of possibly getting the character back in house for a future Avengers movie or something...
