Despite how retcon-crazy Marvel's been lately, that storyline sounds highly unlikely. Especially since MJ has been screwing around with other guys over in ASM and occasionally pining over Peter. Plus they just re-introduced Ben, I think (still don't understand that story) so more than likely they're going for a Clone Saga Part Deux which could set up Ben in 616, as some theorized, leading to a spin-off mini or ongoing. By the way, I just wanna clarify that none of that contains any insider information and remind you all that my Marvel status is equal to "paid intern." That's just pure speculation based on certain facts.

In a related note, at my shop yesterday I saw a copy of the first Clone Saga trade. Looks like a very sweet package with some concept sketches and a cover gallery. My only complaint is they shoulda reprinted every cover before every story like they did with some. That way, if people wanna know what issues or track 'em down fer value's sake, they could. If more come out I might actually pick 'em up, it'd be helpful fer reference rather than pulling out all 200-related books at a time.

I don't think Ben is going to come back. Its all wishful thinking really. But hey, I'm a pessimist, so I hope Marvel proves me wrong. I mean, there are two Caps, Wolverine and Hulk have their respective broods, Iron Man has War Machine, etc., so I don't see why we can't have two Spider-Men around.

I think were in a more forgiving age when it comes to reviving characters. this is not like the 70's when this never happened. So if Ben comes back, its no skin off of anyones nose.

I just thought it was an interesting theory. I think i could come up with a better way for him to return though.

EDIT: in fact...one way could be to say that the Skrull's wanted to replace spider-man with one of there own but where not aware that he had a clone so they kidnapped Ben by mistake an attempted to replace him. So now he's in stasis in a skrull lab on earth with a few other heroes that got replaced/killed. That way you could bring back Ben and a few other cool characters maybe.

The only thing i don't know how to explain would be the turning to dust thing. Maybe say that the skrull was implanted with something that made him turn to dust erasing his body so no one would realise that skrulls where replacing people.

One thing I dont get though is that really Ben is the answer to JQ's problems regarding him wanting a single spider-man with no ties. He's clearly a chump.

I always thought they should go the simplest route..."Oh that Ben that died? It was a clone."

Not really though... because Ben was NOT Peter Parker... even when they said he was... it was too much for people to take; hence, the many people that dropped the book....

The Spectre of Spider-Man will always come between Peter Parker and those he loves and wants to have a normal life with... it's the basic principle of Spider-Man that was removed once he married Mary Jane... no matter how bad it was, he had a hot shoulder to lean on...

Ben Reilly was clearly not the answer... and the droves of fans that ran away seem evident to that... chump. :cwink:

:yay:

Well having Ben alive and single and having Peter alive married with his kid...is a hell of alot better than having Peter's marriage never happen and ben dead i think.

Alot of people have come to like ben since the clone saga. the reason they dropped it would probably of been due to the story becoming dragged out and out of control. Bad writing in parts.

Haven't been here in a while....

Still a huge Ben Reilly and Clone Saga fan (It's great to see Marvel putting the Clone Saga out in collected form finally) but I have to say that I was horribly disappointed with the Clone Saga miniseries and the Ben Reilly arc in Amazing. It was great that they acknowledged it and maybe I had too high of expectations but it just was not good.

The Who is Ben Reilly arc in Amazing was just dreadful. It just was not a good story and it's so sad because it doesn't help Ben Reilly at all.

The Clone Saga mini was just a bit too corny and, honestly, rushed. It just seemed like there was no personality in the characters. Seems like the guys just kind of phoned it in and left it the way it was.

It's just all so disappointing. Two great chances to help bring the character back and get it's own book and two different creators dropped the ball, in my opinion.

:csad:

I, unfortunately, agree. As much as I would like to see Ben brought back, if Mackie and Defalco are involved I might stay away.

I would read anything by DeFalco, just wanna put that out there. But, I agree, the Clone Saga mini needed to be longer and more fleshed out. They basically did a big recap, and then focused solely on the changes to the original rather than tell a complete story. Nothing wrong with that in practice, assuming your audience read every issue of the original and could fill in the blanks. But, for new readers and those who haven't done that, it was a choppy effort.

It was better than the ASM arc, though.

I've liked Defalco's writing in the past on the various Spider-Man titles through the 90's and his early work on Spider-Girl. Ever since the Spider-Girl comic rebooted to the Amazing Spider-Girl his quality of writing has seemed to really drop. Maybe he's just not as into it as he was or something but the stories just aren't sucking me in. Even with the Spider-Girl stories moving into the Web of Spider-Man it's been difficult for me to get through the Spider-Girl stories anymore. I find myself actually flipping through the Spider-Girl stuff to get to the back up story... :csad:

I'm the opposite, Spider-Girl's only rough points for me is when it had to make a quick recovery from cancellation mode. But that's to be expected, and forgivable. But, having recently met Tom and talked Spider-Girl, I can tell you he's definitely still into the book and will be on it till Marvel tells him to scram.

Bad news. Baddddddddddd news.

POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING

Looks like Kaine dies - for real this time - in Amazing Spider-Man #634. I picked up a free Grim Hunt preview comic from my comic store yesterday and it featured two penciled pages from the issue. The pages break down like this:

Peter is woken up outside his apartment door by Kaine, who is in pretty bad shape. There's blood splatter alllllll over the walls of the apartment stairway. He is on the floor, holding onto Peter and trying to tell him something important, then seemingly dies right there on the floor. Peter is left slackjawed.

Well, hopefully he's not dead, or hopefully it's a dream, but by the amount of blood all over the place and condition of Kaine, I have a pretty strong feeling in my gut that he's gonna get it. Likely from the Kravinof's in retribution for killing the Grim Hunter all those years ago. Which makes me torn - part of me is pissed off they're seemingly closing the book for good on the final living major player of the Clone Saga - someone almost as important as Ben himself - but the other part of me respects that in context of story, Kaine had this coming. Killing Grim Hunter has ultimately come back to bite him in the ass, which is a surprise since I always assumed it'd be Doc Ock to do him in.
Aw, what the hell - this pisses me off! And here I am, on the internet, to blow my trumpet! (wocka wocka) Damn. What a way to ruin a comeback, if it comes to be as I perceived it to.

Or maybe he hands off Baby May to him at the last second! :-p

Well that's a bummer. Just picked up the CS collection. This thing is awesome. Bring on Volume 2!

I dunno why, I just prefer reading the stories in collected sexy volumes. The more elaborate the package the more I dig it.

Count me in the camp that has been severely disappointed with the other new Reilly products out there lately. The mini was pretty terrible, although I picked up each issue with fondness; it was great to just see Scarlet in some new pages. It was introduced as what the story "should have been" and it became apparent in the very first issue that was a load of crap. It was just a streamlined version of the story with a couple of changes for the die hard fans.

It would have been far more interesting if they had turned in some time travel level comics straight out of the 90s- cover, style, writing, artwork and all- of the original storyline that was supposed to only last the 6(right? It's been a while) issues.

Any word on when The Life Of Reilly book should be coming out? Anywho, stay classy! Here's hoping for more Scarlet in the future.

Oh, also, that new videogame looks badass. Really hope they have a ton of unlockables- nothing has topped the original PS1 Spiderman game in terms of cool costumes and stuff to find in my opinion, so I'm really hoping for a bunch of cool extras.

Yeah it doesn't look good for Kaine. But I wonder why Ben and Eziekiel were included on that full page which is on the cover... Are they part of the hunt to come? Or the first victims?

I also got the chance to look at the Clone Saga epic that just came out and I will definitely be picking that up.

After having time to go through the "Complete Clone Saga Epic" here are some thoughts.

This is an interesting book. I like it, but it is definitely incorrectly named. This is NOT the "Complete Clone Saga Epic." Instead, this is the Complete Ben Reilly story, from birth to death, in exact chronological order.

To save space this book cuts out nearly entire issues among his first several mystery man appearances, and also cuts out Parker's individual issues once the saga really got rolling. It's actually not nearly as bad as it might sound; contrary to that it's extremely great and very interesting. I'm loving that we are getting an in order telling of Ben Reilly's life. It's fantastic, and I'm most curious at this point to see if things like his New Warriors appearances are going to be included in future volumes.

As it stands it starts with those great little back up stories of him waking up in the test tube and goes all through the lost years and then into the mystery man appearances and finally Power and Responsibility and The Exile returns.

Another thing this volume does is show just how damn great Reilly is, and arguably the Clone Saga in general. While this is NOT complete, I'd argue that every story in here is fantastic, with weakest link being The Exile Returns- from a writing standpoint- how much can you hate the story which delivered the Scarlet Spider costume?

But it should be noted that this is far from complete. Missing is Peter's entire side of the story, and that's unfortunate, because this was a story of brothers, of duality. It's too bad that the issues of Peter being "The Spider" are not included here, because it fails to show just how far they had grown apart, and what is truly at stake. And while Maximum Clonage is definitely the low mark of the whole saga, from a design standpoint it at least makes a bit of sense that Peter decides to "go evil" in it for a bit when you see what has lead up to it at that point. With chunks missing, that entire dynamic is lost.

Also, I'm assuming we're going to be deprived of some other great Clone Saga material- like the Osborn Journal and 101 Ways to end the Clone Saga- in the future volumes just because they don't deal DIRECTLY with Reilly.

The book is also fairly hastily put together, and while the arranging of the exact chronological order of Reilly's tale obviously took some work, there's some fairly obvious "wtf" moments of carelessness in the design. Back covers of a few issues- like the Lost Years blurb on the back cover- are randomly thrown in at the end of certain issues- while some covers appear before their issue, other images appear in the back, and some don't appear at all. There's a real lack of consistency in everything in the book, and no table of contents or anything like that.

So overall, I'm very glad we have this. In fact even if there were an ACTUAL "Complete" set of Clone Saga volumes out there, with every issue, every image, interviews and covers and extra art in the back, I would STILL want this book. Just because the idea of the Clone Saga- through Ben's eyes and Ben's eyes alone in chronological order- is a very good one, and a great way to tell the story that gives it an entirely different vibe from the sweeping release schedual of multiple characters and various minis.

A great addition, but it would still be great to see some super elaborate cloth bound slipcover gigantic Clone Saga volume with ALL the trappings, rather than a collection with a great gimmick.

Thought I'd share this. A few weeks ago Chris Giarrusso put up an offer for some G-Man comics and a sketch of choice on Facebook. I partook and here's what I got:

Never seen him do this costume before on his Spideys, so I said why the hell not.

So I'm begining to wonder what the end result was of that grass roots movement that Howard Mackie wanted the fans to put together for a possible ben reilly miniseries.

It's been a couple of months since it was put together. You guys think its still being considered or is this a dead issue?

Do you guys think its still being discussed and planned out, or is this a dead issue?
