Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread

In response to the fake ID stuff, I just reread the Lost Years (via the Clone Saga Epic book) and in the beginning narration he stated he traveled the world from San Francisco to Singapore to Bombay, so take that for whatever :hyper:

Ok, That recap page is supposed to be Betty Brant writing.
Why does it/she say some person named Ben Reilly....
She dated him a bit, and he looked almost exactly like that when they did....
Also, where were these records found?

I ordered it but it hasn't shipped yet :(

I always thought that Ben travelled the world before he met Seward.
That being the early 90's and he was around for 5 years prior, passports were easier to forge, and less likely to be so completly scrutinized.

He was able to travel more freely out of the US, and then when he came back he met Seward.

hmm, just thought of something, what if it's because of this Italian guy, that makes Ben have to return to the US.

Also, he's using the name Ben Reilly, this takes place before he came back to NY.
In the first mini, it was Henry Jones, it might take place after his "supposed" death.

Sorry, but no, it just doesn't make sense. Ben met Seward after about a year on the road and he was an emotional mess (as seen in the flashback scenes of 'Exiled'). The Ben Reilly in the Italian story was much better adjusted. Also, Ben may have the intellect, but he doesn't have the resources to falsify a passport, social security number and overseas work-visa, along with the monetary resources it would take to fly to Italy (Ben before he met Seward couldn't even afford a night at a bed-and-breakfast). That needed Seward's help. I would assume this story takes place near the tail-end of Ben's years on the road.

I don't know why you think passports were scrutinized less in the 90's. Just because it was pre-9/11 it didn't mean you could waltz in with some cheap fake. Also if you take into account Marvel's sliding timeline this doesn't take place in the 90's anymore, but in the last five years (2004-2009).

It would make sense that Seward is helping Ben at this point. It's too soon to tell how this might play into the grand scheme of Ben's life, but it would be cool if it led into his decision to go back to the States... assuming we get more Ben stories.

Ben was Spidey when I first learned who Spidey was. He'll always have a place as a Spider-Man to me.

So I was paging through some Onslaught comics and Ben appears in Green Goblin #12. As far as I know this appearance hasn't been documented before. I was pretty surprised to see it, but it is Ben as Spidey and Scarlet Spider in one panel... where GG wonders what Spider-Man is doing to fight the Sentinels and what happened to Scarlet Spider.

EDIT: never mind, Comicvine knew.

Geeze, I can't believe I created this thread almost 5 years ago. This is probably the longest running thread I've EVER made on a message board!

Yeah. And if you ask me, it's time for Ben to come back for good. I mean in current continuity.
They should just make 6-issue "the clone saga" series the real deal (I mean the tpb is called The Real Clone Saga) and have Ben return.
With OMD this could have been possible, but I guess they blew that chance with the "Who was Ben Reilly" story.
But there are plenty of other ways.

No, they shouldn't do this. I like the original clone saga infinitely more than the six-issue mini. The only thing better about the mini is that Ben lives. If the six-issue mini becomes canon then you lose a whole lot of cool stories like Redemption, Final Adventure, ASM#400 and Blood Brothers.

Today I was just thinking back to one of my attempts at resurrecting the Clone Saga back in 1997, and just thought I'd share.

Back when I was an aspiring artist, I sat down and began drawing a 7-part epic (across all the Spider-titles) where SM #75 ended with Ben staying alive (like my other post-CS ideas). In this continuity, Ben and Peter were both pulling double-duty as Spidey (Peter had Amazing and Peter Parker, Ben got Web and Sensational, they alternated Team-Up and Unlimited and shared Spectacular Spider-Men). However, I embarrassingly admit that I made a major faux pas during my story.

I had only really been reading regularly since 1991, so by 1997 I was still actually a little green to the finer points to some of the larger stories due to my inadequate collection at the time. I believe it was UXM #303, which gave a brief background on Illyana's history and I mistakenly combined in my mind her kidnapping by Arcade and her time in Limbo.

I had gotten it in my head that Arcade sent Illyana to Limbo, so one of the key points to my story was Norman hires Arcade to send baby May to Limbo. When she emerged a teenager, she had spider-powers with the addition of telepathy (as opposed to Spider-Girl's tactile telekinesis) and Osborn programmed her to hate Spidey. He set her out as the new Scarlet Spider against Ben and Peter. Of course, the spider-senses all canceled each other out, and it was using MJ's personal tracer amped-up that knocked some sense into May and brought her back on the right side.

What followed was a team-up with the X-Men (due to Phoenix feeling May's psychic backlash) as the Spiders invaded Murderworld to take on Osborn and Arcade. I never really got to finish the story, especially when Spider-Girl debuted months later, but the end result would have been a Scarlet Spider spin-off where May moves to Seattle to find herself and build a life to make up for the 17 or so years she lost. I'd still love to do something with it, but it needs a lot of major tweaks.

Not a fan of the baby-who-has-their-age-accelerated-to-super-powered-adult cliche. Still remember the travesty that was Franklin Richards/PSI-Lord. It's a silly plot-device and way overused. I'd rather May was just rescued from Mongrain as a baby and raised up right. Peter is a bit too street-level for that kinda plot.

Well, to be fair, I didn't even know who Psi-Lord was then. Wasn't a big FF reader till Waid's run in vol. 3. I had like an issue of F Force, but not much to go on there. Plus, it was also pre-internet explosion/Wikipedia era so unless you had the books not many resources to go to. (Plus, also, it wasn't as cliche then either! Gotta think in 1997 terms, not 2010!)

Thankfully, I'm a much better writer these days. At least if the reactions to my Sins Past revamp idea back on page 9 are any indication.

if you still have those fan made stories in your collection, could you share them with us? are there any actual comic book panels associated with this story yet?

I would love to see Ben return somehow. My cousin is convinced the best way to do it would be to bring him back as a villain... I disagree. I mean there COULD be a short Winter Soldier/brain washed type story, but I think it would be great to just have him back as he was... without any plans to have him take over as Spider-Man or anything. The best and worst thing about Ben was that they were trying to have him take over the mantle. Fans knew what was happening and hated Ben and Marvel for trying to push the idea, but Marvel spent a lot of time and effort making him a well-rounded and developed character so that he COULD become Spider-Man. If Ben were allowed to just exist I think there would be a lot of potential there. Ultimately he had to die in order for Marvel so say "here is our retcon, it can't be undone because he turned to dust- he always was the clone"

I really hope there is something more to the Grim Hunt where Ben appeared on the cover. Marvel has been teasing for so long, have had so much Ben material lately... I think its time. Love it or hate it, sales would be boosted.

So I'm just re-reading the Clone Saga Epic trades and in the first arc with Ben and Peter teaming up to fight Traveller at Ravencroft there is a villain called Wild Whip who Ben says he helped capture during his time in exile. Aside from the terrible name, this might be a cool story to revisit in the Web of Spider-Man books if they continue to tell Ben stories.

They need to advertise thier books better...

While no surprise, it's a terrible shame that Web is being cancelled, because this looks like the end of the road for JM DeMatteis's small Ben Reilly back-ups. :csad: You mentioned Wild-Whip. Ben also fought D'Spayre during his time on the road. It was mentioned in 'Exiled'. It would have been nice to see both of those fights.

I also wanted to see what happened with that Italian mafia story JM set up. That looked like it was going somewhere. Damn. The book wasn't advertised enough, but us readers probably needed to support it more than we did too. Not too late to write a letter to Marvel.

Ben has to come back! Look who they brought back Mattie Franklin,Madam Web,Arana and Kaine....So why not Ben ?? None of these characters are close to Ben's popularity.
