Looks like David Ayer might not be helming this after all. Hope it doesn't keep this movie from being made though.

Doesn't sound like he's that into big budget studio films and I'm sure WB wasn't thrilled with how SS worked out, either.

What it sounds to me like is David Ayer was taking shots at Universal because they felt his "Scarface" movie was too dark and Universal wanted a PG-13 version.
But of course the click-bait comic book sites all used that to take shots at Gotham City Sirens.

Ayer is a very passionate director,just look at Fury and End of Watch. The man wrote Training Day for crying out loud! He did his research on SS and had an idea of what he wanted to do but WB didn't let him take his time and iron out a good script. Plus when the studio saw BvS not pull in a billion dollars threw more money at his movie which should've been a much leaner, gritter movie instead of a light in the sky sfx end of the world movie.
I think the new studio heads saw the mistakes of SS and told Ayer to take your time and hammer out a great script.

Actually Geneva Dworet-Robertson has been hired to write the screenplay for Gotham City Sirens. So while WB likes Ayer as a director, it seems like they are less impressed by his writing abilities.

I think Ayer gets a bad rap for Suicide Squad. Even as a fan of it I totally get why certain people didn't like it. But I think there are reasons to not lose hope with Ayer on Gotham City Sirens:

- he made Suicide Squad in a short time frame, not his fault
- the studio reacted to the BvS reaction and changed his film
- He made a wrong choice going with the surreal choices of the film, something he later regretted. But he's only human and had to make a choice one way or the other.
- he's very capable of making a good film and has done so in the past.
- he has more time on Gotham City Sirens.

Many movies get made in short timeframes so that's no excuse. There are many classic films that were made in only a few weeks. It's the nature of the business...it's fast moving. Even if the studio didn't react to BvS & change the film, it was still going to be heavily flawed based on the angle he chose to approach (end of the world using villains as heroes instead of a contained story).

More time for GCS doesn't mean it's going to be any better than SS, especially when he's shown he has a fundamental misunderstanding of the characters he's dealing with. Don't believe me? Take a good look at Harley Quinn.

He may well have a very good CBM in him but we have to register his effort on SS as a miss and that is the most relevant individual indicator we have for the moment. The above from your post was a fundamental error that unfortunately condemned his film. And he will still be only human of course even if he makes a similar huge mistake on a big choice on his next CBM. It's a question of measuring the risk of him making a human mistake again on a project like this as the DCEU only has a number of chances left before some GA guys switch off for good.

He may do a hell of a lot better next time but we have to treat him for now as we would Patty if she'd given WW a threat that was too tame, for eg like stopping a prolific bank robber or pizza thief. t:

The characters were the one thing Suicide Squad got right. Especially Harley Quinn. So if the Gotham City Sirens movie is as true to the charters in the Gotham City Sirens comic books, the movie is going to be great.

Harley Quinn has been misunderstood by both the New 52 writers & David Ayer and it lies in the over-sexualization of the character. I'm not saying the depiction given by Robbie is awful, but there used to be a lot more to the character than a bunch of sexual innuendos.

That's interesting. I didn't find Robbie's Harley Quinn to be a character who was solely defined by a bunch of sexual innuendos. As a psychiatrist, there were several points during the mission when Harley used her knowledge of psychology to manipulate the team and their antagonists. Even her dream of a happy domestic life with Joker seemed to hint at a psychology that went beyond being a mere sex object.

I think Ayer could really make this film work. If WB gives him and the writer enough time to develop a solid story and arc for the characters, we could be in for a great film.

And for any of you who think he's going to have Catwoman with a "Meow" or cat tattoos, you need to breathe a little. It works for Harley and Joker more than others as hey don't care about that sort of stuff as characters.

Yeah you should, it's the greatest horror film of all time. It's arguably Nicholson's best role too.

There's no doubt in my mind they could make the classic costume work if they wanted to. I think it looked weak in that flashback because it was baacailly a throwaway Easter Egg for the fans and not something a ton of time and thought went into.

Not directed at you but the excuses that have been made for Harley not having her classic outfit and voice are just horrible. If Batman wasn't in his classic outfit, would people say, "It just wouldn't work for live action"??? H*ll NO!!!

The only problem I had with the flashback dance scene was the cowl. All you have to do is make a smaller cowl and it'll work just fine.

I'm still pretty dissapointed we didn't get the full hog of comic accurate costumes like the work of Michael Wilkinson.
