As we all (better!) know, Spider-Man: Clone Saga part 6 was released on Wednesday. We finally have the full story of how the story of the Spider-Clone was supposed to play out. Naturally, there were things I liked and things I didnt:
Liked:
-Seeing the old school Goblin costume again. I'm still hoping it makes a comeback. Not holding my breath, though.
-Harry was the still the evil bastard that he was in The Child Within story. Sure, they gave away who the mastermind was with the cloning of Norman Osborn and the "Gotcha!" references, but it was worth it to see Harry in his maniacal glory again.
-Green Goblin War! Norman vs Harry!
-Ben Reilly lives. I cant say I mind him being dead in 616 but I wouldnt mind him being alive either. I guess the original plan was to have him leave New York to be Spider-Man elsewhere. That would have been fine with me.
-Harry gets locked up in Ravencroft.
-"The end....for now."
Disliked:
-Norman clone being killed off. It almost feels like "Why bother?" I can understand that the clone wouldnt have the same homicidal hatred of Peter that the real Norman would, but Norman Osborn as a good guy just feels wrong.
-Kaine suddenly feels fatherly once he holds baby May. Yes, he's a clone of Peter and Peter would have loved his daughter dearly but just because you are a clone doesnt mean you have the same feelings as the original. (See above.)
Undecided:
-Peter, Mary Jane, Aunt May and baby May live happily ever after. I never had a problem with Peter and MJ being parents. I dont mind them seeming to be older that the readers (thus my dislike of BND). Its certainly better than the "Is the baby alive or not?" mess we had to deal with. On the other hand, I like the damage done to the Parkers by the Clone Saga. Aunt May was dead, Ben Reilly was dead, baby May was missing and presumed dead and Peter's worst enemy was back in the picture. The Clone Saga is the reason that the Green Goblin is Spider-Man's greatest enemy. No one else could do all that to Spidey.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable read. I'm very glad that Marvel decided to take the risk and go back to such an unpopular story. It was a great read for us Osborn fanatics. I'm just sorry it didnt sell better. That "The end...for now." may never happen.
That said, I'm happy with the way The Clone Saga really ended. I saw nothing in Spider-Man: Clone Saga that I just demanded be made cannon. I like that Norman is back and as big a bastard as ever. I would prefer that Harry were still dead (or at least still evil) but thats a rant for a different story.
