Honest question, can you point me to a major motion picture where the cinematographer screwed up an office environment? I mean, if those are "wow" scenes then there's gonna be some crappy stuff to compare them too

There are plenty of with office scenes that don't look nearly as good as GL's office scenes.

Now I'm even more puzzled. Cinematography-wise, these wowed you?

They didn't exactly "wow" me, but I did note how great they looked. And that's what I was listing off for you guys, the scenes I felt looked great.

Those shots weren't as stunning as the rest, but I felt the lighting/camera work was absolutely perfect in those scenes.

You're delusional. Not once piece of cinematography is GL is better than anything in BB or TDK. Sure, maybe there was some cool CGI scenes in space, but that is not cinematography. If we're talking framing, lighting, composition, depth of field, and camera movement, GL lacks in each one of those repesects. Hate to burst your bubble and not trying to hate on GL at all, just responding to a ridiculous statement of blasphemy.

Not true at all. The fight scene outside the bar alone looks better than any fight scene in BB/TDK, and the scene where Abin Sur gives Hal the ring looks better than anything in BB/TDK overall.

But really, you can't say I'm wrong and I can't say you're wrong. Everyone has their own specific preferences when it comes to things like this.

Hell, Larry Fong is my all time favourite cinematographer, and I think Watchmen/300/Sucker Punch are the top three most beautiful movies I've ever seen. But I know a lot of you would disagree.

Whatttt??? My mind is just boggled right now. The fight out side the bar has one redeeming shot, which is a 360 shot while Hal is getting punched. But aside from that, I just can't believe what I'm reading.

Watchmen did look amazing. I haven't seen 300 or SP though.

I did like the look of Hal's apartment as well.

I loved the first 10 minutes with Abin Sur. It was pretty epic, IMO.

Not sure if I agree that it had better cinematography than Batman Begins. That movie is a masterpiece, IMO.

As for Watchmen and 300, those films are meant to be completely stylized and unrealistic which works for them, thought it is clearly not the tone that GL was going for. GL didn't know what it wanted to be.

That's not even my favourite shot. The shot where Hal leaves the bar, we see the rain on the car's window with the green light reflecting off of it... Oh man that was beautiful.

BB was a masterpiece, but not in cinematography.

X-Men: First Class had better cinematography. Super 8. All of the Transformers films. I'd even say that Daredevil had better camera work. Need I say more to nail this on the head?

Pretty low standards then.

Don't understand how you could possibly be enamored with those Zach Snyder movies and then utter Green Lantern in the same thread.

I mean his office and his apartment? What the .....

That's subjective.

Your opinion isn't shared by all.

I said they looked nice, I didn't say they were the best scenes I've ever seen in my life.

Why aren't you guys commenting on the other scenes I named? I listed off some great looking scenes we can discuss.

Yes, you said that already. I'm just asking for examples of recent feature films that you've seen that make the office scenes in GL stand out with a "wow" factor.

Maybe because none of the CG scenes you mentioned have anything to do with cinematography?

Any office scene. It's not that big of a deal, but it adds to the overall experience. It's the little things coupled with the bigger things.

How about the scene where Hal gets the ring from Abin Sur/the ride home? Surely you guys can't say that looked bad.

Well those are two different scenes. I liked the Abin/Hall scene very much thanks to a solid performance by Jango. But Hal's "Nononononono.. don't do that" and "purple blood" lines came very close to killing it for me.

As for the Tom/Hal ride home, I thought it was pure ****. More forced comedy and nothing truly worthy of filming praise. It was a Jeep driving down the road for crying out loud lol

As for all those other purely CG scenes yo mentioned, those shouldn't be on a critique list for cinematography. Just an FYI

What the hell does comedy or acting have to do with cinematography...?

Maybe you missed the part when I said: nothing truly worthy of filming praise. It was a Jeep driving down the road for crying out loud lol

What exactly about that scene stands out as well executed to the point of a "wow" factor?

And yes, when dialogue is really bad it completely takes me out of the scene and ruins the moment; just like a bad score. How can it not?

I can't believe you're saying GL has better cinematography than BB or TDK. When Bruce Wayne is training in the mountains they had some fantastic shots.
Also in TDK when Batman was overlooking the city on top of the skyscraper in Hong Kong looked fantastic, it was stunning in IMAX.

Those scenes alone are better than anything seen in GL. Oa was nice to look at but I could never shake the feeling I was looking at a CG creation.

Exactly. Plus, completely rendered CG does not get attributed to cinematography. You can't in good faith compare the two. Just look how silly it sounds lol

Superman Returns

Kinda' the go-to 2-card of the last twenty years.

Actually, the interior office stuff in SR wasn't that bad. It was all the stuff with Superman that looked like crap. :O

GL looked like a Saturday morning cartoon compared to that one magnificent shot. If there's one thing Nolan is really good at, it's setting such a huge scale with those massive shots. You never feel "contained" in his films.

I don't get what you're saying. First, the Superman Returns office scenes make the GL office scenes look great. Then, they weren't bad?

Cmon, and office scene is an office scene is an office scene. Claiming that the two in GL had a "wow" factor is just silly unless you're really impressed by Pottery Barn furnishings

I rethought my remark....out loud....using text.

So sue me. ;)

Brazil had nice office scenes.

So did Hudsucker Proxy.

And Se7en.

Although some may attribute that more to production design....and the fact that they were meant to look great....and not just plainol' offices. :O

It annoyed me when Singer used a CGI Routh for his flying scenes especially at the end when he's suppose to do his grand exit. But I thought him going into the sun to recharge was nice.

The whole thing had a sort of muddled, soft and non-distinct quality to the picture. Heck...the only real romantic scene...the flight with Lois/Supes...felt like you were watching it with sunglasses on.
