Pretty good for something that came in with such bad reviews. Gotta give credit where credit is due.

I thought it was common knowledge by now that a movie can get the worst reviews ever and still make a lot of money. I think Green Lantern was bound to have a good opening just from the eye candy superhero factor.

I can understand cutting stuff for budget reasons, but you would think with $300 mil being spent in the end, they could have done that stuff.

Oh we all knew that...but the comparison was mostly sequels that had very successful predecessors to all but guarantee return audiences, whereas a ground-up character like GL has a tougher impact to establish. Hence why such overwhelmingly bad reviews (indicating a pretty bad movie) would naturally present a tougher hill to climb than, say, X3 or TF2 or Spidey3.

But to be fair...it has yet to make 'a lot of money', and with Cars and TF3 right around the corner....

No I would say it has had a very solid opening and will make a lot of money. The question is will the studio be happy with that amount in comparison with the budget and will it be enough to greenlight a sequel. I find it pretty amazing if that $300 million number is accurate I would have never expected Green Lantern to get that kind of budget.

Why is this film getting such poor reviews across the board? Every review I've read has been either nit-picking about certain elements or deriding it for what it isn't as opposed to what it is... Which are both very poor forms of critique.

It's also funny that when a crappy movie like "Fast 5" comes out, it gets generally favorable reviews praising it because it's "fun" and "good for what it is." Pathetic. This is why film critics are not to be trusted. Ever.

Well Wolverine got slammed by critics but still made nearly $375 million worldwide and has a sequel on the way. But this is kinda getting a tad of topic at this point...haha. The strong midnight numbers indicate Green Lantern will make a nice chunk of change but in comparison with the budget who knows if it will be nice enough.

The point is that some movies are 'critic proof' of they've already 'sold their tickets', for the most part...like a sequel to a big hit. But to be fair to GL, it was obvoius that it was a superhero movie to anyone whether they read a review or not, so there's at least some built-in appeal left in the genre.

Well, that's the big question (which we posed earlier). Do you or anyone else never, ever trust critics...good or bad? If you like a film, will you just as easily dismiss a good review of it as a bad one? Or would yo tout the good one to support an opinion, while dismissing the bad one?

I look at it more in terms of percentages...if it's rather split, then it's anyone's guess. But if it's overwhelmingly one side or another, then there's got to be something to it...just from am film-quality standpoint. Then again, I've never really cared if a film gets a sequel or not.

Anyone going to see this again in theaters? I'm unsure as of now. I figured I'd at least see it twice.

My folks just came back and they loved it. I asked if it was confusing or hard to follow, they said no. They can't wait for the sequel. I really do hope their is one.

Did anyone notice the scene where Hal is in his apartment and says "Not bad, huh" that was in TV spots was not in the movie? I wonder how much got cut from this film?

Pretty good start.

It's the second week that will tell the tale. All of this bad word traveling around about the movie, can kill it. I have friends that already will not see it because they think DC laid another egg.
