First off, let me say... YOU chose to delve into the "spoiler" section of this forum.

Alright, I've been ghosting on this forum since the first Raimi spiderman was in production. I am stationed in Japan and have now seen this movie twice (opened here on the 30th). I must say that being stationed overseas really paid off!
My personnel review:
1. This is the film we wanted from the beginning.
2. This one will make you consider the Raimi films nothing more than a Saturday morning cartoon series! (I did really like those films too)
3. Garfield is Parker. This film should convince all of us of how badly they mis-cast Parker in the first films.
4. Yeah his hair is pretty big, but not an issue as it pertains to the movie/story.
5. Web shooters are fantastic, the sound when fired=Perfection
6. Wise-Cracking! Yes indeed.
7. Lizard was bad ass, no snout was alright, but I felt they could have made his skull a bit more reptillian. The body was the perfect mix of human/lizard, but the skull should have been a better blend of the two. VERY small issue.
8. Thank goodness the silver tipped nike slippers didn't detract/nor were they even all that noticeable through the movie.
9. Ozborn is dying, and he is a complete mystery throughout the movie. Stay till the END credits!
10. Dennis Leary was great as Capt. Stacy. Went down fighting!
11. The web-swinging was superb. He even did the web yank move to get up the Oscorp building as fast as possible! Suit looked awesome, and I hated how it looked initially!
12. Aunt May knows he is Spider-man... She knows...
13. I have to say again, this is the STORY/FILM we should have gotten from the beginning. I, for one, will just try to forget the first films. Those will go down in history in my mind as allowing a movie as good as THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN to happen.
14. SPIDER-Sense was done right.
15. I though I would miss not having ol' J.J.J. in the film but I never even gave it a thought! It would not have added anything to the story. Maybe it will in the future, but completely unnecessary this go round.

Finally, I am completely satisfied that they rebooted this movie/franchise. I thought it was far too early initially. This movie explored the characters without making the movie about anyone else but Parker/Spiderman as it should be. Marc Webb has given us Spiderman. After seeing this, the only reason for keeping your Blu-Ray Raimi films, will be to have a good laugh... The Amazing Spider-man, is the Batman Begins of the Spider-man franchise. NO, IT ISN'T ANYTHING LIKE BATMAN BEGINS. I only provide that context to express just how much of a leap forward this film is compared to the first three. I haven't read any other reviews for this film yet, nor do I care what some highly paid professionally educated critic thinks. Haters/Fanboys/the Devoted, will all enjoy this film. I have to say thanks to Raimi/Maguire for doing what they did. This epic reboot would never have been possible without them. I have faith that Marc Webb will deliver again. He could choose the Spot as the next villian and pull it off!!! For you folks who have to wait until the 3rd to see this, get there early, sell a kidney if your broke, quit your job, pimp your mom, whatever...just plant you butt in a theater and see this!

Great review! You got me more pumped!

JUST AMAZING!

I've forgotten about the other 3 films already this is what I wanted in the first place but was given a different rendition, to me this was the most realistically acurate depiction of Spider-Man ever seen anywhere!

Raimi's one just seems like a dream state version, it was good in some areas but was more focused on the whiole relationships with Oscorp and Mary Jane etc!

THIS focus' on Spiderman and his world yes a bit of love intertwined but it is very good and a very good adaptation I will be watching this a few more times for sure!

I'm just hoping they use a Venom in the sequel and just FOCUS on that villain alone and hopefully bring in Carnage into 3 that would definitely blow everything out of the water, Don't really want to see Goblin been over done for 3 films already this was a very refreshing film, Loved it!

Just got back from the advanced NYC screening...

The movie was absolutely GREAT. Fun, emotional, action packed, creative and beautifully shot. I don't have time to do a full on review, but the everything just blew the Raimi films out of the water. This is how Spidey should be done. Of course there's room for improvement, but this was a very strong start.

9/10.

man i hate you guys lol now im really pumped up!

Just got out of my screening and walked out feeling pleased about this movie, going in I just wanted something to get the taste of spiderman 3 out and something that is different(you can only watch spiderman 2 so many times)

I'll just make a few/reiterate a few points.

- Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone managed to do something for me that unfortunately Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst couldn't do in 3 movies and that is care for the relationship between peter and his love interest. I will say that this may be due to something else...but I will get to that soon enough

- Really dug the villian choice and portrayal, I really dug the fact that there was a connection between Connors and Peter Parker, although I feel like it could have been delved into more.

- This portrayal makes Raimi's spiderman seem stiff in his movements, and I'm all for this more acrobatic and dynamic portrayal. I loved spiderman being savvy and using his environment too as I was afraid all he was going to do was swing away in this movie.

- The one thing that really had this film come together for me was definitely the supporting cast, little things like flash thompson showing up on multiple occasions felt great. I really hope other people like Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben as I do, I really wanted more screen time for him, but as we all know the movie couldn't progress much further without his death. I do miss the presence of J. Jonah Jameson, but that character was one of my favorites in the Raimi series. Denis Leary had some good moments here too and really sets the tone for the movie in one exchange he has with peter ;)

- There is a definite presence of (500) days of summer in here, it is like undeniable, but I like the fact that it at least fleshes out the characters somewhat

- My biggest gripe would have to be the editing, granted I saw it in IMAX 3D(not by choice), it seemed jarring in some of the more action filled scenes

- This movie has made me really question who is peter parker and who is spiderman, he is one of the most portrayed characters in a lot of forms of media. Whether it be the comic books, the raimi films, video games, tv shows, etc. I feel like there is no universal definite spiderman, and that some portrayals will be loved and some hated. I enjoy the young, "somewhat reckless teen" spiderman we have here since I feel like he can only grow grow from here, not saying that he doesn't do some of that in the movie already

I'm really excited for this entry into a new series despite it being "a retold story". I feel kids who have never seen the Raimi films will choose this spiderman as the one they probably identify with. When a sequel comes out and the whole "this is just the same thing" bias is left at the door, then more acclaim will come for this series. I still like spiderman 2 the most, but I feel like this is the film I wanted when the original movie came out

I just got back from watching it. It's very good! I literally had to sit front and center because it was so packed, but I turned out loving it.
The 3D is great. It's not totally in your face, and when it is, it doesn't bother much. I'm not too much of a critic or expert on 3D, but I loved it.

I have yet to really let the experience sink in enough for me to write a better review, but the story overall was nice. I felt like there were a lot of missing chunks that should've been there, but otherwise, I hardly minded it.

The Lizard's motives...
...aren't really backed up. But there is a motive, and it's unclear if Connors is addicted to the formula like a drug, or if he really wants to turn Manhattan into Lizard City.

Marc Webb and those who did casting decisions made the right moves.

Andrew Garfield was spot-on. There were moments where it sounded like his accent would slip at the end of a line, but that never happened. His performance as Peter Parker is really different from Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker, so it's difficult to pick a side.

Emma Stone was great. I haven't seen The Help or any of her other drama roles, so this proved to be something great. She and Andrew brought a great amount of levity to their scenes that hardly felt excessive.

To be honest, I didn't think Chris Zylka would be that good as Flash Thompson, but he proved to be a lot more dynamic than I thought. This next spoiler is just about Flash's development, and it's a nice wink to his character in the comics.
His appearance at the end wearing the Spider-Man t-shirt was priceless.

I don't know if I have to talk about the web-swinging because everyone's pretty much covered it for me. I've never really had a theater experience that had me fully immersed like this did. I mean, Avatar did a good job of that for me too, but this was so much better. The POV sequences were great, and I really felt like I was swinging with Spider-Man. While Raimi's web-swinging served more as something fantastic and grand and heroic and all, Webb's web-swinging really put me there.

Overall, you can tell that Marc Webb and co. didn't want to let anyone down with this movie. He surely didn't let me down. In spite of being different from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, it definitely brought me back to seeing Spider-Man swing around in 2002 with my dad. I gave it a 9/10. You don't want to miss this.

Reviews sounding good guys.

It looks like this will be one of those films that will get more respect a year or two down the line, with it's 77% RT rating at the moment. I still can't wait to see this.

It's only a 9 because I'm leaving room for the sequel to be a 10. I... I can't even process my thoughts enough to give a coherent review. Astonishing, spectacular, fantastic, you name it! Wow!

Wow, I'm glad you liked it that much.

Wow, I'm glad you liked it that much.
I thought it hit all the right notes: emotions (both high and low), story, action... by the resolution, I was already imagining what TASM2 could be like.

The online geek contingent's frustration with this film is totally justified...if you're a lover of Raimi's first film. I can completely and totally understand their reaction to this film, considering how it was advertised. As bosef said a couple of days ago, Sony should be taken to task for how they marketed this film.

Because, make no mistake, while a reboot tonally of the character, this is an out and out remake of Raimi's first film. Plain and simple. Sony can never hide from that. And for that, it should be frowned upon. It should lose major points.

But, not with this viewer. No way. This is the film I wanted a decade ago and it's simply a matter of execution and tone. This is not the "dark and gritty" film that the online geek community/critics have labeled it as. It's simple a bit more grounded. You can buy certain aspects a bit more than Raimi's first film, yet while still being a comic book movie, through and through.

It just simply comes down to slight modifications to how they approached the characters and the world they built that completely and utterly won me over...and it starts with the Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

I've never read the Spider-Man comics as a child or adult but I practically lived on the various cartoons in the 80's and 90's. Having said that, I don't want the story of Gwen and Peter to go where I know it's going to go because it's going to absolutely crush me.

Andrew and Emma are pure cinematic gold in this film. Just, wow. In 2 hours and 15 minutes, they completely made Tobey and Kirsten's story through THREE FILMS look completely childish. I can't describe it any other way. I arched hard for this couple. High marks for these two on all fronts.

The situation with Uncle Ben and how his death and reaction to the death has come under criticism and I can't really understand why. Webb uses the old "show, don't tell" when it comes to how the rest of that story plays out. Literally, the entire second half of this picture (after the bridge sequence) is Peter's acknowledgment and understanding of what his Uncle was trying to tell him...what his FATHER lived by.

In the way it's handled, yes, you feel like Peter/the film forgets about the situation with Uncle Ben...until you realize that Peter's actions are driven by guilt and driven by understanding what his Uncle was trying to say to him, thus making Uncle Ben's death have more weight than it ever had in the Raimi film because this film doesn't tell us. It just shows us.

Yes, the major flaw, like Raimi's, is the situation with the villain and logic of motivation and the plot mechanics. Technically, while Connors does what he does is in the film, it's just in the film very early. It's a stretch but it is there.

The crane sequence. Okay, we all know what this sequence is referencing and I wanted to hate it's inclusion because of what it was trying to do. But, I couldn't because unlike the bridge sequence in Raimi's original with the New Yorkers, this one comes out somewhat organically from the film. Personally, I probably would've dropped the sequence but by doing that, I would've skipped out on some of the best web swinging shots in all of the Spider-Man films. Just pure money shots...and especially knock out shots when viewed in 3D.

With all of that, I wish the film didn't do the world building that it did but, man, I want to continue. I do. I want this franchise, with this cast to be something special. Because, while a bit rocky in few places, this film is a knockout. I had more fun with this film than the Avengers, ten fold. It's not even up for debate.

And the final swing/final image....yeah, I teared up.

The guy talking to Connors is Osborn ?
It has to be. I mean, it makes the most sense. Besides, if you take a good look at his hands, they look like the hands of a sickly person.

It's Osborn. No question. It's essentially the same thing Nolan did with the Joker card at the end of Begins. Same idea.

I'm sorry, I don't want to get into terminology but I really have to question you on this. Is it really just a "remake" of the first Spider-man film? or is it just a reboot that stays too close to the obligatory plot beats that were in the first film?

But don't forget that Osborn is
fatally ill! Do you really think a man in his condition would still be able to walk/talk!?

Yes? [blackout]Fatally ill does not mean vegetable.[/blackout]

It's a remake. The beats are not just similar. They're almost exact. Yeah, in theory, it's not a remake because details are different but for a film that's suppose to be a new take on the character, why does it feel so, so similar to Raimi's first film?

Some of that is inherent to the origin mythos in the comics. But, again, some story beats are almost identical.

Again, I'm not complaining. But, I understand why a certain segment of the online critics are crying foul on it. This is pretty much the same film we got a decade ago, with a different tone and different execution choices.

Put it this way, I'm willing to be serious money that had Raimi's film never existed, this film would've be praised more than the Avengers.

I have learned to not let my sweet sentimentality and nostalgia for the Raimi films cloud my judgment for The Amazing Spider-Man.

I'll post my video review tomorrow, but as a start to this new set of films....this knocked it out of the park. The sequel to this could potentially be one of the greatest sequels of all time, more so than Spidey 2. If they go through the the infamous Gwen Stacy arc, we are in for something very special.

This movie wasn't the greatest comic book film I've ever seen, but it has to be one of the most emotional and depth perceiving ones. It sets up potential for more greatness. And I'm glad they did so, because you shouldn't let all of the tricks out of the box at first try.
