Do you mean these two?

Yeah...
They aren't.

yup those^

mucho polyblocks

It only looks that way besause of the noise on the screen. The game employs a grainy filter that, while it looks awesome in gameplay and has been copied numerous times, can actually make screenshots look almost blocky.

Silent Hill really needs to be seen in motion to be appreciated.

could it really affect it that much to the point were it looks like a mediocre ps2 game?

I DEFINITELY would not go as far as to say it looks like a PS2 game, but remember, these are also the first shots released. Of course the graphics are going to be improved.

I seriously doubt Konami would pull a Halo 3 and release a game that looks past gen. Plus, SH has always been about the story, so you know there's a lot of plot they can cram on an HD and Blu-Ray disk. And as much as I like Resident Evil, those games are notorious for their recycled and rehashed story lines. I would gladly take a mediocre looking SH game above a gorgeous RE game any day of the week.

But that's just me. I'm more of a fan of story than shiny graphics.

RE:4 was gorgeous and it was the scariest game ive ever played....

and it DOES look like they're pulling a halo3.
from what i see

The trailer showed nothing???!!! Why are you guys complaning about the graphics already?

I'm really surprised at how much better this shot looks than the other two. Every texture looks different, and the amount of detail is amazing. Just look at the switchboard thing, you can make out each individual dial.

The shot even shows an incredible level of moonlight. More than I think I've seen in a game yet.

The teaser was pretty lame, they didn't even get a decent voice actor, sounded like an intern reading off a sheet they threw in front of him.

still not anything too dazzling... Dead rising graphics.

and yeah... the teaser actually managed to be less than the soul calibur5 teaser..ugh

This looks ten times better than Dead Rising. Just look at the moonlight in the pic.

And I didn't see the Soul Caliber 5 teaser. I always found that franchise very overrated.

Given that they had no footage for it I think the game is probably pretty early still. I hope they kept the idea of making 'the real world slowly turn to hell all around you in suttle ways real time' though taht sounds impossible to pull off. Originally they ahd said they had wanted SH 5 to take place in a crowded environment with people going about their everyday lives.

I agree, it would be impossible for a team to pull of a scripted world-change like that. However, if they could write a program that algorythmically darkened/bloodified/rusted textures, warped models and caused AIs to get more aggressive, and it all worked, it would be really damn awesome.

That is, of course, if it all actually worked. A program with that much control over the game would have to go through more rigorous testing than most aspects of a game.

I'm a big Silent Hill fan, but I have worries about the game, as it's not being developed by the original team

Looks rough for next gen, especially when you consider the excellent early last gen SH2.

Also were is this 'moonlight' everyone's talkin aboot? I'm seeing only artificial light.

"Moonlight" is the term for the illumination that is caused by light bouncing one object and hitting another. It causes a soft glowing effect called "moonlight".

Most games forego this effect either because the engine can't handle it or the artists don't think to put it in. Many artists, whether they work digitally or on paper, never utilize moonlight and it reduces the realism of the artwork. The fact that the SH team has already rendered multiple areas of moonlight on the main character (that hopefully shift in realtime) really says a lot about their attention to detail.

The Silent Hill series is another one my favorite franchises, every single entry of in the series has been phenomenal for me. SH5 is another experience i'm looking forward too.

Exactly how I feel. And even if the graphics don't live up to the standards set by the other games, we have the story to forward to. While many games use plot as a device to throw the player into action scenerios, Silent Hill is one of the few games that you play to simply experiance a good story.
