I've loved Kirkmans run ever since he came on the book. I had never read anythign by him so it's not like I was a "carry over fan".
As for Vaugn, I don't think he really advanced anything. It just seemed liek you were reading a comic they were putting out till Singer came on (which never developed of course) and the only time the art was good was when Brandon Peterson did the book. Don't get me wrong I love Immommens art but sometiems his quick art (like i nultimate FF/x-men etc) dosent always look good. Espcially if youve read superman secret identity.
wow, I completely disagree with you. Kirkman is by far the WORST thing to happen to this title and most can attest to that. Vaughan's run was my favorite and its a shame he's gone bc we're now left with this drivel

Well for me it's because he's boring and ever time I read something from him I feel like I've wasted $2.99. He has good ideas but mediocre to bad executions. I like the concept of Magician but after reading that arc, I had this overwhelming feeling of "...what?".

So why don't you guys like Kirkman on the book?

Oh boy:

1. COLOSSUS! Remember the guy who beat up Thor and IronMan in Ultimate War? Yeah, I do. He's the same guy getting tossed around by the Blob and detained by freaking Multiple man. Write the damn character better and stronger.

2. His Jean Grey makes me sick. She's not as crazy as she is emo and annoying. I can dig the goblins but c'mon.

3. The way the Magician arc ended was ridiculous. He had the same powers as Proteus(pretty much) and the Proteus arc was much more entertaining and it ended waay better.

4. Charles in love with Jean :whatever: I know it's an old 616 conecept but I could have lived without seeing this Ultimized.

5. He's totally killed the Iceman character for me. Bobby hasn't done anything badass or even memorable since Kirkman got behind the reigns. Same goes for Storm really.

Kirkman is rockin my socks off in Ant-Man. I don't know what other books he writes off the top of my head but you'd think Kirkman wrote Ant-Man first thing in the morning after a nutritious breakfast and after a night of clubbing and drug abuse, he comes home and writes UXM.

So why don't you guys like Kirkman on the book?

1. He destroyed a significant part of Wolverine/Sabretooth history by establishing Creed as Logan's son. Wolverine's arch enemy is his son? Thats silly..

2. He destroyed Cable's character. Theres no way this character can be anything but a dead ender now. No, theres no future for Cable in Ultimate Marvel.

3. His Ultimate Phoenix story is cheese extreme. The Phoenix was a cosmic entity that was locked up in a cage created by aliens and the cage eventually developed into planet Earth? Thats just garbage.

4. His dialogue and character development for the characters is blatently contrived. Its obvious hes trying way too hard to make them interesting. The discussions about the play Storm is writing and Charles revealing to Scott that hes in love with Jean are good examples of Kirkman shooting blanks.

5. The Magician arc. Nuff' said..

whens nightcrawler and colossus going to be best friends again god its taken so long hah.. really noone looses a friend that close.. or for that long.. in the real world someone that close always comes around- jeez lay of nightcrawler where is the loveeee

Wait, we need to lay off Nightcrawler? He's the friggin homophobe. He needs to lay off Petey.

Well, in defense of this one, that only happened because Magician altered it around so that everyone would need help and he could be the one to come to the big rescue and be the star.

Ok, very true. It's hard to complain when dealing with reality-altering enemies so I'll let that one go. However, Petey should have totally squashed Cable when he grabbed him by the leg a few issues ago lol.

..and someway, somehow; I just know that Kirkman is responsible for the Falcon-thumb-in-the-eye fiasco in Ultimate Nightmare :cmad::p

Colossal it's very hard to take anything you have to say seriously with that avvie. Is that you?

Tee hee.

EXACTLY! I dont think his ideas are bad but hte execution is just horrible. His X-men is too much like 616 and I loved this book bc it was different and edgy but not so much anymore. Plus he's really made alot of the characters bland. Storm, Wolverine, and Cyclops for example are no longer interesting and either dont have much personality or dont do much. He spent WAY too much time on the Magician stuff. Personally I wish that character was never created and never joined the X-men. The team was full as it is; I dont want to see new members and if we do get new members, Id rather it be an Ultimate version of an established character and not some horrible original

Yeah. Pretty much what everyone previous has said is the reason I, and most of us, are hating Kirkman's run. To make it simple? It's a lack of interesting things.

Interesting things. In Kirkman's world, this apparently means shock factor. Now, hey, shock has its uses, but in a world where shocking things happen all the time, shock factor tends to either fall short or set a constantly rising bar. But there's a difference between shock factor with bad writing behind it and shock factor with good writing behind it.

Examples (and yes, these are my own opinions): Brubaker killing Banshee in Deadly Genesis was, despite tasteless and mostly meaningless (despite it being pretty much the only thing done with Banshee in some time), shock factor with good writing behind it. Bru's a good writer, and while Deadly Genesis and his current Uncanny arc might have their flaws - well, all writing inevitably will.
Cable-Wolverine, Professor Xavier's secret lust, and Wolverine's bastard child, Earth as a cage... Those are all shock factors here and there, but they're all bad writing. Any of those, theoretically, could be done well. They could be made interesting. No, not all four at once can be made interesting. No, Magician is not interesting. Magician sucked. The other ideas could hold promise, but in Kirkman's unsteady hands, unfortunately do not. Might I also point out that, of those four, I know for certain that at least two of them suffered from the "shock ending" syndrome. This is the idea in writing that you start a chapter with a shock or end a chapter with a shock - and while this is a good technique when used sparingly, when used constantly it becomes a constant and boring feature. I just don't remember where in their issues Sabretooth and Lilandra let the figurative cats out of their bags.

We might all think anyone who likes Kirkman on this book is messed up, but hey, it's your opinion. I just don't know how in the world you can come to have it. :woot:

As for Vaughan's run being bad... Wow. I don't know, just off the top of my head, I can think of three hugely interesting things he did - introducing Ultimate Longshot, which was done infinitely better than the introduction of Ultimate Cable (it's almost like comparing a pristine apple to a rotton one), introducing and expanding upon Emma's school and the characters there (Havok, Polaris, Cannonball, Northstar, Sunspot, Doug Ramsey) which was similarly handled much better than Ultimate Cable or Magician or Date Night, and the ending arc... What was it, Magnetic North? This arc was a huge grand finale, and set a great landmark for the title. ... Which is why I hope Kirkman doesn't touch it with a thirty foot pole.

Wow.
While I don't share the same opinion on the writer/writing, those were all very well thought out, well written responses as to your problems with the direction the title is headed.
You honestly don't see that much on the rest of these boards.
Thanks.

Yeah. I write a whole ton and then my twin/partner-in-crime, Colossal Spoons, comes along and writes a one sentence approval of my message. Tried and true formula, I swear. Go check the Exiles thread! *Stares at Spoons.*

So, since we've all listed our qualms with Kirkman, why don't you make a well-written and well thought out post of you own telling us what we're missing and what Kirkman's doing right?

Newsflash: I agree with your previous post; especially regarding how shocking events are to be handled properly.

Yeah, Kirkman's ok on other books though.

Like I said before, I dunno how he writes Ant-Man so wonderfully and UXM like he's on drugs.
