The original concept of the Phoenix was an interesting one...the confusion comes from people adding to the story
I blame Morrison. It was laid to rest years ago and then he brought it back, which gave everyone else an opening to add and convolute things even more than they already were

didnt she already start to accept her power as the Phoenix with Kelly during Scott and Jean's sebaticle and with Claremont having her take the name and creating raptor effects though?

She accepted the power and name back in the mid 90s during the Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix storyline. She started exhibiting the raptor soon after. In Seagle's run she wore the old costume again. Claremont didnt do anything with it besides reaffirm that she and Phoenix were 2 seperate beings and reinforced the X-factor retcon. None of these writers convoluted anything to the Phoenix as they didnt add or change anything. Jean was Phoenix in name only, no cosmic force attached to her. Morrison however decided to bring it back full force and started adding his own interpretation to the Phoenix mythos. Since then, its become an even more confusing mess than it ever was

so what was the raptor effect supposed to be? i know in one fight against the Neo(?) they fought inside some kind of trance state and she attacked them with a raptor (which could easily be overlooked as astral projection of her mind's power). but im sure there was an instance where she made the effect in the real world as well.

and thats the reason why i really don't like Grant Morrison. he always feels the need to "reinvent" characters we love- and they happen to be the two i personally love most, X-Men and Batman- and all he really does is make a giant headache out of it. not to say there weren't issues, stories, or ideas i really liked, even loved during his run, but they dont out-weigh the rest of the crap that went along with them.

I always assumed that the raptor effect was a telepathic illusion whenever it was used without the Phoenix Force.

yea i suppose so, but if i were an X-Man that would freak the hell out me never knowing if my friend was turning into a pyscho-b%&@! or just showing off. its like trying to guess if your g/f is really pissed at you or if shes just on her period.

a mix of TP and TK. It was purely for visuals. There was no actual phoenix force behind it. When she first started using it, it was always pink but then after she put on the costume, Marvel got inconsistent with the coloring with it appearing fiery at times, but still it was just a manifestation of Jean's own TP/TK not the actual cosmic entity that she originally had in the early 80s

They dealt with that. Scott freaked out when he first saw it when Jean put the costume on. He reunited the original X-men back around UXM 356ish and had a conversation with Beast about just that. Hank reassured him that Jean couldnt go insane with the power as she never really was Phoenix. Jean herself, told him that she took on the costume to empower and explore her own self

i was reading uncannyxmen.net and it said in the the X-Men Forever mini Jean re-experience key moments in her history and it revealed her initial attraction to the Phoenix Force. it also went on the say she was taken to another plane of existence and touched the Phoenix Force and her mind was opened and saw the knowledge of the cosmos and learned that "Whereas during the months prior to this incident, Jean might have been subconsciously tapping into the Force while exploring the limits of her powers, she was now fully aware of her link to it." this was right before Morrison.

UNCANNY X-MEN #519

STORY BY Matt Fraction
ART BY Terry Dodson
LETTERS BY VC - Joe Caramagna
COVER BY Greg Land
PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, December 23rd, 2009

Cyclops takes a voyage into the head of Emma Frost in hopes of containing the horrifying piece of the villainous Void that has been stuck there since UTOPIA. Can they possibly defeat the awfulness that has haunted the most powerful being in the Marvel U? Tensions are rising on Utopia as the X-Men deal with the new members of their team and the fact that the island is…well…sinking. And Wolverine and a classic pal take one of the craziest journies you’ve ever seen. Parts 4 and 5

I've been a bit behind on my Uncanny X-Men reading, so I've just read the last three issues in one go. Overall, I enjoyed them - although I'm one of the few readers that are really keen on Fraction's run. I found #516 and #517 to be the better issues of the three, especially the latter - it was refreshing to see the X-Men work together as a team to fend off the Predator Xs. Rogue's combo, even though I'm not sure it's actually within her power limits, was really imaginative. I was a bit disappointed by #518, though...I found it a bit boring and I'm not looking forward to the rest of the "psychic rescue". Pretty much anything to do with the Sentry or the Void bores me to tears

My poor Scott!

Emma, can you be more helpful in a situation than you're in bed?

You know, I think Madison Jeffries is one of my favorite "new" (though not actually new) characters.

I think in most issues outside of Sisterhood, Fraction's done a decent job writing. Sorta. Really, my grievances with this title these days boil down to two things:

1. I don't like the X-Men moving to Utopia. I wish this comic stayed in San Francisco. The fact that the "SFX" status quo didn't even last for one full year kinda pisses me off, and I think the destruction of Genosha proves that moving all of the mutants to a single targetted point on the map is a bad idea. Betcha by golly wow, any undead Genoshans who make it out of Necrosha alive won't be moving to Utopia.

2. I don't like the revolving door of cameos. If Fraction just wanted to say the cast of this book was Cyclops, Emma, Beast, Charles, Magneto, Warren, Betsy, and the X-Club (Madison, Nemesis, Rao), I'd be perfectly fine with that. It's the 1-page appearances of completely random characters that gets to me. I mean, what the hell is up with a 3-panel appearance from Boom-Boom? Or how about Storm throwing and lightning bolt and giving a quick quip before disappearing entirely?

I guess this one comes down to taste, because I really like the move to Utopia, partly because it's such a fresh direction for the X-Men. The San Francisco status annoyed me a bit because it seemed like a pointless move; if you're gonna boot the X-Men out of the classic mansion, at least make it different enough to be worth it.

I can see where you're coming from on this one. I think Fraction is trying to show the scope of the mutants that have joined the X-Men on Utopia, but it does come across as disjointed when you throw random characters into a scene just to show that they're around.

40 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Yay! Portacio returns to UXM. I really hope he becomes a new regular and that Dodson and Land are out

seems as if its a heavy hint at Jean's return but Im betting its another tease and will refer to Hope. It just better not be Kitty

Isn't the final part of the Messiah trilogy coming out soon? It's probably Hope.

At first I thought it was definitely Jean, but I think I just got a little too eager. Seeing as how they use the term "gone" instead of "dead" makes it seem more like Hope... unless they're the same I guess. Regardless, I'm pretty excited.
