UNCANNY X-MEN #523

STORY BY Matt Fraction
ART BY Terry Dodson
COVER BY Mike Perkins, David Finch
PUBLISHER Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, April 7th, 2010

SECOND COMING, CHAPTER TWO The race to find Cable and Hope is on, but who will get to them first? Will it be Cyclops and the X-Men or Bastion and his mutant-hating cabal? Cyclops isn’t waiting for the answer to that as takes the fight directly to Bastion with the New Mutants!

Wolverine killed someone and Nightcrawler is royally pissed off. I said that couldn't possibly be the new X-Force lineup.

There's good confilict there. Wolverine, Angel and X-23 have no problem killing. Nightcrawler and Colossus who are aginst it. Psylocke in the middle.

Casey was my favourite, too. I wish he stayed longer. It doesn't hurt that he focused on my 3 fave X-Men (Archangel, Iceman, Nightcrawler). His Archangel was fantastic.

He really was. All three of them were well done. I personally loved Chamber in Generation X so him being with them in Uncanny was a major bonus for me. I even liked Stacey to a small extent while under Casey's pen (Austen killed anything good about her though).

His stories were boring though. There really wasnt anything particularly excitign about his run. He had one of the worst rosters. 5 men and no females? When he finally does add one, it happened to be Stacy X, the worst X-man ever. The art started off good but got horribly bad so the book became almost as bad to look at as it did to read.

Interesting. Wonder if this will be the start of the split......

the art did get rough at times. i thought the stories were good though. and stacey was fine. she didn't go downhill until austen got ahold of her. i think his history of porn comics messed up what casey was trying to do. but she's dead now so it doesn't matter.

Austen didnt ruin her....he simply got rid of her, which for me was one of the best things he did early on

Differences of opinions I guess. I didn't like her at first, but by the time the X-Corps storyline rolled around I'd really grown to enjoy her. She was a former prostitute who was making something more of herself. And then Austen came along and made her suddenly throw herself at everyone from Nightcrawler to Angel, getting naked for attention, she developed a chip on her shoulder moreso than before, and just generally ****eified her... and THEN he wrote her out. He destroyed the character and then got rid of her is what he did.

Then whoever did that Decimation mini with Sally Floyd depowered her. Then whatshisname from the new New Warriors series gave her powers and put her on the team, and then blew her up... so it sucked to be her all around once Casey left.

For me the best thing Austen did was bring Northstar into the team. It was about damn time.

That was good, and the issue itself with the exploding kid was really good, too. Between Northstar and Juggernaut, Austen did a great job with the cast additions. And as a Generation X fan, Husk was icing on the cake.

Of course, Austen leaves, Northstar leaves, Juggernaut leaves and goes bad again, Husk goes off panel, and all the good things are erased.

In all fairness, it took years after Austen left for Juggernaut to go bad again. Up until 2008, Juggernaut was heroing it up in the UK with Dazzler.

Damn you, Carey!

True. Carey's a good writer, but that issue alone probably ticked me off more than any other in years (other than the final issue of BND)

Charles: But Cain, you reformed.

Juggernaut: Nope. I was faking it.

Charles: You couldn't have faked it. I read your mind. You cried. You would've made a face.

Juggernaut: *sniff* *tear* Oh, Charles! I'm so sorry! Waaahhhh! Waaahhhh! WAAHHHHHHH!!! OH, WAAHHHHHHH!!

Danger: I'll have what he's feeling.

I didnt like Austen's cast as I thought it was way too big (lol....looking back he was rather tame compared to Fraction's current UXM). I didnt like the idea of Northstar joining nad Juggernaut should have never been made a hero. I hated his use of Husk as he ruined her. Jubilee prettty much got wasted. Did like Havok coming back and Polaris finally being made an X-man again. I loved what appeared to be M joining the team but that was only for one mission

What the hell is up with all the Storm/Kitty hate?

Any true X-Men fan knows they were int regal part of some of the best X-Men stories of all time.

The people in here who bash Storm and Kitty Pryde also seem to be the same people who are vocal about disliking Chris Claremont. So it is clear to me that some of you have never picked up an X-Men book before the mid 2000's and that's sad.
Because if you have, you would see that there are plenty of amazing stories written by Claremont, most of them involving Kitty and Storm.

I've always thought that Psylocke would've fit perfectly with that lineup. I also remember reading somewhere that he wanted to use Quicksilver and Magma as well. That would've a great team imo. Oh well. Nothing we can do about it now.

Claremont wrote the MOST annoying Kitty Pryde. Under him, she was a loud mouth brat and only became tolerable when she left his pen. This was typical Kitty. Her tanturms were legendary. I felt bad for Storm for having to put up with such nonsense

Thank god most of my exposure to Kitty is through other writers. If I grew up in the 80's, I'd probably hate her too.

Speaking as a dude who got into the game late and grew up on Lobdell as opposed to Clairemont, I must say the only writer that has written a good Kitty Pryde for me was Joss Whedon.
