Once Upon A Time In America

Saw it two months ago and still have no idea how to rate it. The main problem is the ending, as it seems to be very abstract and uncertain. The question is, whether the whole film (except the opium den scenes and flashbacks) was dream or not? And if yes (that's most likely true), how to rate it? I mean, the film does indeed introduce a complex story structure and some very interesting devices, making it a real piece of the film art. However, about 85% of the story didn't even happen, but opened the door to the protagonist's mind and his worries, still not giving the clear answer to what was the point of the film, if it even had one.
